- Hostetler School Reunion
Like so many of the rural schools in the country the Hostleter School between Baden and New Hamburg was closed in 1965 with a reunion of about 200 former pupils held on July 3. Mr. Earl Hostetler whose great-grandfather, Joseph, came from Somerset, Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1836 and settled in the area, outlined the history of the school. In 1847 Joseph's son, Moses, along with William Bosonberger went to the council of the District of Wellington and asked for aid in building a school. For the first years a certain amount per pupil was collected to pay the teacher's salary and other expenses. The first school, a frame building, was built across the road from the present school on land now owned by Arthur Gingrich, while the building just closed was erected at a cost of $1,523. The school bell was imported at a cost of $19.50 including $6.40 for custom duty, 67 cents for freight and 21 cents for rope.
