  	THE GORE FIRE INSURANCE CO. Among the many institutions of which Galt boasts, none are more conspicuous than the Gore Ins. Co's pal-atial and imposing structure situated on the corner of Main and Ainslie streets. The style is of a Romanesque char-acter, and is built with Connecticut brown-stone, rock-faced base up to the first storey window sills ; above this it is faced with brown pressed brick, tooled portage entry stone trimmings and Terra Cotta carvings. The corner of Main and Ainslie streets is round, having over the main entrance a heavily moulded arch, supported on two Doric columns, and over the arch the Company's name carved in mediaeval letters. This round corner is continued up above the roof, forming a round tower, roofed with Span-ish tiles and terminating in a columned and octagon lantern, with ogee top and flag staff.   Born in 1826 in Ayrshire, Scotland, Hugh McCulloch came to Canada on 24 August 1850. In 1859, he and his business partner, John Goldie, purchased the Crombie Factory located in Galt, and renamed the factory Goldie-McCulloch Limited. As the business flourished, factory operations included the manufacturing of boilers, engines, flour, sawmill and wood-working machinery, safes and vaults. He was company president between 1901-1910, but retired in 1906. McCulloch also co-owned, with David Spiers, the Galt Gas Works and later Galt Electric Company. McCulloch served on the Galt Collegiate Institute Board, Galt municipal Council, and was a member of the Galt, Preston, and Hespeler Street Railway. He was also the director of Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Company and Millers and Manufacturers Insurance Company. He died on 3 September 1910 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery. Hugh McCulloch, one of the venerable citizens of Galt, being now in his eighty-first year, was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, September 19, 1826. His parents, Hugh and Jane (Osborne) McCulloch, were also natives of that place, and the father, who was a mechanic, carried on different branches of the wood working industry. His son Hugh was educated in the parochial schools of Ayrshire and served an apprenticeship to the machinist's and millwright's trades, becoming thus well equipped for practical duties in business life. In 1850 he sought a home and fortune in the new world, settling at Galt, Ontario, on the 24th of August of that year. After working as a journeyman in general mechanical lines with James Crombie & Company until 1859, he formed a partnership with the late John Goldie, who had been a fellow employee with him in the service of Mr. Crombie. They purchased their employer's business, which they conducted under the firm style of Goldie & McCulloch, and the enterprise is still carried on under this name, although Mr. Goldie died in 1896. The plant, however, since 1859 has been known as the Dumfries Foundry. The company operates the most extensive manufacturing plant in Galt and is well known throughout the Dominion, ranking among the leading manufacturing concerns in Canada. It may be said that this is the mother plant of Galt's industries, for nearly every other iron concern in and around Galt was at one time directly or indirectly connected with this establishment. Employment is to-day furnished to more than five hundred men. The manufactured product includes Wheelock engines, Corliss engines, Ideal engines, boilers, heaters, steam and power pumps and mill machinery of all kinds. In 1892 the business was incorporated, the stock being owned by the McCulloch and Goldie families. Prom small proportions the enterprise has grown to large magnitude and is one of the most important industrial concerns of this part of the Dominion because of the extent of its output and the large number of workmen who find employment here. The business has been developed along sound lines in keeping with the progress noted in trade circles, and 1 the safe, conservative policy inaugurated by the firm on its inception almost a half century ago has always been maintained. In 1855 Mr. McCulloch was married to Miss Jennet, a daughter of Hugh McCartney of Ayrshire, Scotland, and unto them were born two sons and a daughter: Hugh, who is now vice-president and general purchasing agent for the company ; Jessie, the wife of Charles Arondale Shearson of New York; and Robert Osborne, secretary, treasurer and general correspondent for the company. In politics Mr. McCulloch is a Conservative and though never a politician in the sense of office seeking he has nevertheless labored earnestly and effectively in the interests of his party and has served for twelve years on the town council. For the past twenty-six years he has been a member of the Collegiate Institute board, representing the county of Waterloo. He holds membership in the Presbyterian Church. His history is notable from the fact that few men of his years continue in active life. Old age, however, need not necessarily suggest helplessness or want of occupation. On the contrary there is an old age which grows stronger intellectually and morally as the years pass by and gives out of its rich stores of wisdom and experience for the benefit of others. Such has been the life of Mr. McCulloch. A History of Ontario: its resources and development _________________________ The Goldie & McCulloch Co., Limited There is no better known manufacturing establishment in the Dominion than that of the Goldie & McCulloch Co, Limited, of Galt. This business was originally established by Messrs. James Crombie & Co. in 1844, who were succeeded in 1859 by Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch. In 1891 a joint stock company with a capital stock of $700,000 was organized, the officers of the company being: Hugh McCulloch Sr., President; John Goldie, Manager; and Hugh McCulloch, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer. The buildings and plant of this extensive concern cover four and a half acres, and from three to four hundred men (according to requirements) are employed in the various departments of the works, whose earnings (paid every two weeks) mostly find their way into the coffers of the different traders of the town, adding not a little to the well-known general stability of the merchants of Galt. The general lines of machinery manufactured by The Goldie & McCulloch Co. are summarized thus: The Wheelock improved automatic slow speed engine and "Ideal" high speed engine, which they claim are unsurpassed by any other steam engines in use; Steam engines of various styles, adapted for every class of work; boilers and all modern appliances in connection therewith; wood-working machinery; flour, oatmeal and buckwheat machinery; wool machinery; saw-mill, shingle and stave machinery; turbine water wheels, all of the latest designs; fire-proof safes, bankers' safes, vault doors, etc., of every size. Circulars and particulars furnished on application. The gentlemen who own and control this extensive establishment are personally so well known throughout the Dominion that little need to be said here respecting them. We may state, however, that Mr. Hugh McCulloch, and the late Mr. John Goldie, were both leading employees of Messrs. Crombie & Co., but Mr. McCulloch was the first to reach Galt in 1850. Since they assumed control of the business in 1859 their record has been one of continued success and progress, the result of their ability, energy and intelligent application to business, in conjunction with a fortunate combination of facilities adapted to specific fields of action. Nor have they given their attention wholly to personal affairs. Both gentlemen named have always taken an active interest in everything relating to the welfare of the community. In concluding this sketch, we would state that the relations between the proprietors and employed of the Dumfries Foundry have been almost invariably of the most pleasant and satisfactory character. All the members of the company are active and enterprising business men, liberal in their dealings with their employees and as members of society highly esteemed. Director Jubilee Souvenir of Galt 1897 _____________________________ HUGH McCULLOCH SR. 1826-1910 Married: Janet McCartney - 1855 Hugh McCulloch was born in Sorn, Ayrshire, Scotland on September 19, 1826 and arrived in Canada on August 24, 1850. He settled first in Ayr before coming to Galt on May 28, 1851. In 1859, with his partner John Goldie, Mr. McCulloch purchased the Dumfries Foundry from James Crombie and formed the firm of Goldie & McCulloch Co. Ltd. During its first years of operation, the company performed general foundry work but, as business increased, the firm went into the manufacture of boilers, engines, flour and sawmill machinery and woodworking machinery. In 1879 the company added the manufacture of safes and vaults to its operations. Mr. McCulloch was named company president in 1901 and retired from active work in the business in 1906. However, he remained company president until his death in 1910. In 1923 the Babcock and Wilcox companies of Great Britain and the United States became the majority shareholders in the company which then became known as Babcock-Wilcox & Goldie-McCulloch Co. Ltd., and was more recently renamed Babcock & Wilcox. Mr. McCulloch was a member of the Galt Collegiate Institute Board for twenty five years and was a member of Galt municipal council in 1873 and 1874, 1876 and 1877, 1879 to 1881 and 1888. He was one of the original members of the Galt, Preston and Hespeler Street Railway, later the Grand River Railway, and became the railway's president for a short time on the death of Thomas Todd in 1899. Mr. McCulloch was a director of the Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Co. from 1868 to 1874 and served as the company's vice president from 1902 to 1910. He was also a director of the Millers and Manufacturers Insurance Company and was a partner, with David Spiers, in the operation of the Galt Gas Works and later in the Galt Electric Light Company.
