- THE GORE FIRE INSURANCE CO.
Among the many institutions of which Galt boasts, none are more conspicuous than the Gore Ins. Co's pal-atial and imposing structure situated on the corner of Main and Ainslie streets. The style is of a Romanesque char-acter, and is built with Connecticut brown-stone, rock-faced base up to the first storey window sills ; above this it is faced with brown pressed brick, tooled portage entry stone trimmings and Terra Cotta carvings. The corner of Main and Ainslie streets is round, having over the main entrance a heavily moulded arch, supported on two Doric columns, and over the arch the Company's name carved in mediaeval letters. This round corner is continued up above the roof, forming a round tower, roofed with Span-ish tiles and terminating in a columned and octagon lantern, with ogee top and flag staff. Total height from the side-walk about eighty-two feet. The Gore has about 125 active agents through Ontario.1a

ADAM WARNOCK
1828-1902
Member of the Cambridge Hall of Fame (1996) Married: Stephanie Hespeler - 1850
Born in 1828 in Nelson, a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, Adam Warnock immigrated to Canada with his family first to Beverly in 1833 and then, in 1835, to Galt. In 1850 Mr. Warnock married Stephanie Hespeler, the sister of Jacob Hespeler and William Hespeler, and with her had two sons, James Edward Warnock and Charles Raphael Hunter Warnock. Mr. Warnock was what has been described as a "man of prominence" for almost all of his adult life. From 1850 to 1857 he was a partner, with James M. Fraser, in a dry goods and grocery store known as Fraser & Warnock. Following this he formed a partnership with his brother James in the ownership of the Galt Edge Tool Co. formerly the Galt Axe Factory owned by H. H. Date. He served as a member of the 1st Battalion of Waterloo Militia receiving a commission as an Ensign in 1850 and a Lieutenant in 1856. Mr. Warnock was a trustee of the Galt Collegiate Institute and one of the founders of the Galt Hospital Trust. He served as President of the Hospital Trust for three years and was a Vice-President of the Gore Mutual Insurance Company for the last twenty-five years of his life. His interest in the woollen business began as a partner with James Crombie in mills they operated in Plattsville and Preston. The Preston mill later operated as Geo. Pattinson & Co. one of Preston's largest employers and one of the largest woollen producers in the country. In 1881 Mr. Warnock was part of an eight man group known as "The Syndicate" that formed the Galt Knitting Company. The former Robinson & Howell Co. textile mill on Water Street was purchased and converted into a knitting mill. Mr. Warnock became the president of the company and remained in that office for twenty years. The company manufactured shirts and drawers on a moderately large scale by Canadian standards. By the turn of the century the company employed about 110 people. In 1885, in partnership with Andrew M. Newlands, Mr. Warnock founded a small knitting firm which operated under the name of Newlands & Co. In 1894 Mr. Warnock withdrew from the Newlands partnership when he sold his interest in the company to Andrew
Newlands Jr. and Joseph Stauffer. Mr. Warnock retired from business in 1901 due to ill health, leaving the day to day operations of the Galt Knitting Company to his sons James and Charles. He died on August 29, 1902 and is buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery. The Galt Knitting Company manufactured a large variety of knitted underwear, eiderdowns, shoe linings and knitted specialties and remains in business today. Now known as Tiger Brand Knitting Company, the company manufactures a wide range of fashion sportswear and is still operated by members of the Warnock family.
