  • Notes
    • THOMAS MITCHELL, farmer, Township of South Dumfries, was born in North Dumfries Township, 12th April, 1840, and is the son of John and Sarah Mitchell, the former of whom has been a farmer all his days, and a native of Ayr, Scotland, having been born there, 12th August, 1811. He is still among the living, and resides on the farm he took up in the year of the Rebellion (1837). His wife, Sarah, was also born in Scotland in 1806. They emigrated to Canada - the father in 1834, and the mother in 1836 and were married in Galt, Waterloo County. Thomas Mitchell, our subject, was united in marriage, 26th December, 1865, with Jennie Torrance, a native of Wigtonshire, Scotland. She was born 7th Dec., 1843, and is a daughter of Thomas Torrance, who came to Canada in 1850, and was drowned in the Grand River, in March 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are members of the Presbyterian church, and have found in their lifetime that fortune's smile has fovoured them. When Mr. M., who received a good general and mathematical education, first entered the arena of farm life, he purchased 85 acres of improved land, the buildings on which were all put on after coming into his possession. He and his sister Ellen are the only two living representatives of his father's name.

      _______________

One of Ayr's Fine Old Gentlemen Passes to His Reward

One of the oldest residents of this village passed to his reward on Wednesday morning in the person of Thomas Mitchell, Bruce street, in his 92nd year. "Uncle Tom," as he was familiarly known, was born on the farm now occupied by Deans Cochrane and resided in this neighborhood the greater part of his long life, removing to Ayr about 22 years ago. He was a man of many fine qualities and was highly esteemed by a host of friends. He was married some 65 years ago to Jane Torrance of Paris, the ceremony being performed by the late Rev. Duncan McRuer. His wife predeceased him in December of last year. In religion Mr. Mitchell was a Presbyterian. He was also a member of the Ayr Council a number of years ago. In his earlier days he was a great curler and took part in many a contest when the games were played on Jedburgh dam. In those times wooden blocks were used as "stones" and pine brush brooms cut from a convenient tree were used for sweeping. In the early days there were two curling clubs. These organizations were known as the Ayr Curling Club (the oldest club of its kind in Canada) and the Dominion Club. These forces later united into what is now the Ayr Union Curling Club. Since the demise of his wife, deceased has received the faithful attention of a niece, Mrs. John Cuthbertson, of Collinsville, Illinois, who gave him every care during his last illness. The funeral will take place to the Ayr Cemetery on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
