      Death of Gilbert Wallace

Succumbed to Cerebo Spinal Meningitis After Short Illness

A well-known and highly respected resident of North Dumfries in the person of Gilbert Wallace passed away on Friday evening, May 10th, after only four days illness. On Monday he was suddenly stricken with what developed into a severe case of cerebo spinal meningitis which baffled medical skill, notwithstanding that three doctors were summoned, including Dr. Wm. Goldie of Toronto. Dr. Goldie diagnosed it as the first case of that particular type in this district in the last 25 years. The late Mr. Wallace was born at Port Elgin, but had lived here many years, being in the 45th year of his age. Eight years ago he married Miss Jean Rutherford, who, together with two children (Willie and Janet), survives. His father and mother, two brothers and two sisters are also living. They are: John at Lauder, Man.; William at the coast; Mrs. Dunham and Mrs. Mrs. Conkey at Clyde. In religion the deceased was a Presbyterian and in politics a Reformer. He operated threshing and stumping machines for some years, and resided on lot 37, con. 10. The funeral, which took place on Monday to the Ayr cemetery, was largely attended. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Jas. Deans, John Marshall, Samuel Conkey, Gilbert Main, Andrew Dryden and Fred Hanhoeller. Mr. Wallace of Lauder, Man., a brother, arrived just after the funeral.
