JAMES LIVINGSTON, M.P.P., of Baden, is a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born in 1838. Receiving a parish education, and spending some time at his father's trade of weaving, he came to Canada, and after a year spent in Mornington, Perth County, he entered the employ of Messrs. M. B. & J. S. Perrine, of Conestogo, where he was several years engaged as foreman in their flax manufacturing establishment. In 1865, in company with his elder brother John, he commenced flax growing at Wellesley Village, from which their business extended, until now they cultivate about 3,000 acres of that plant annually in different parts of the county. For the past seven years these gentlemen have carried on flax and linseed oil manufacturing at Baden, of which village they own the major part. The subject of our sketch has taken a very conspicuous part in public affairs as well, and during several terms has presided as Reeve of Wilmot. In June, 1879, he was elected to the Ontario Legislature for South Waterloo, as the candidate of the Liberal party, since which time he has held the seat in that body, discharging its duties with a degree of ability highly complimentary to himself and satisfactory to his constituents.

      Death of Mr. James Livingston

The death of Mr. James Livingston ex M.P. for South Waterloo, occurred at his home in Baden on Thursday last, April 15th, after an illness of a few days' duration, in his 82nd year.

The late Mr. Livingston was one of Canada's pioneer flax growers and linseed oil manufacturers.

He was born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on November 27th, 1858, and came to Canada in his early manhood, working in the flax industry for a number of years In 1865, in company with his elder brother, John, he commenced flax growing in Wellesley, from which their business extended until they were cultivating from 3,000 to 3,500 acres in flax in different parts of the country, and manufacturing oil at Baden.

In addition to being President of the Dominion Linseed Oil Co., the late Mr. Livingston was interested in the Yale Flax Co., in Michigan. He took a keen interest in the public affairs of the Township of Wilmot, and of the county. He was reeve for some years, during which he was member of the County Council. In June of 1878, he was elected to the Ontario Legislature for South Waterloo, and resigned in 1880 to become a candidate for the Dominion House. He opposed the late Senator S. Merner, of New Hamburg, whom he defeated, and held the seat until 1900, when he retired.

Besides his industrial and political activities, the late Mr. Livingston was interested in various financial institutions, being a director for many years of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Co., president of the Yale State Bank and director of five others in the State of Michigan. He was also president of the A H. Hart Co., of New York.

The deceased is survived by two sons and three daughters, namely; John P., Baden; H. P., Toronto, Mrs. James McColl, Yale, Mich., Mrs. Aulay Morrison, Vancouver, and Miss Alice, Colorado Springs. Mrs. Livingston predeceased her husband sixteen years ago.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to the Baden cemetery.

      A Fine House

The magnificent house of Mr. James Livingstone, Baden, is rapidly approaching completion. It will be, when fully completed, a marvel of beauty and convenience- large rooms, tastefully decorated in fresco work, and with hot and cold running water in all the rooms, bath rooms, steam-heating apparatus, gas fixtures etc. it will be the finest and most comfortable residence in the County. The only thing to be regretted about it is its exceeding plainness outside, no hint being given to the observer of the grandeur, within, though that to some would be a charm. A side- tower, in our opinion, have added greatly to its beauty, and helped to harmonize the external with the internal. It is a great wonder the owner ever would have erected such a residence where he has. One would have thought he would have chosen a larger town with its social, educational, and religious advantages, as the site for such a home- Berlin for instance. It would be so easy to live here and to go to and from business etc. But the owner knows his business best. We only throw out the hint the "any other man" may not make what we consider a great mistake.
