    • Jas. C. Campbell's Death
One of Dumfries Township's Pioneers Dies at 80 Years of Age

At a quarter past eight o'clock this morning Mr. James C. Campbell entered into his rest at his residence on Market Street, after an illness solely created by the natural declining of the constitution from old age and ? lasted more or less during the past winter. His death removes another of the North Dumfries Township stalwarts from the scenes of earth's activities and a man who was favorably and well known throughout these parts. James Campbell was born near Hawick, Scotland, eighty years ago, and when his father, the late John D. Campbell, with his wife and family emigrated to Canada and to the newly opened section now comprising this township, James came along as a boy of four years; and for the seventy-six years that followed he lived on the homestead farm on the East River Road, just at the Foot Bridge, and in Galt, he having retired here with his wife ten years ago, leaving his son, John, on the farm. It was difficult in those early days to acquire much of an education, but to an aggressive character like that possessed by the sturdy Scotch youth, this presented only an obstacle that contributed to the formation of a still more determined character, for he studied every subject that was within his reach and ultimately became one of the most practical and best-informed men in these parts. His fund of historical information was marvelous, while in a generality of themes he was exceedingly well posted, being one of the most entertaining and instructive conversationalists of the early times of Dumfries to be found anywhere. He had a keen appreciation of the humorous and a vivid memory to recall the detail of incident. Being a man of stalwart physique, strong and muscular in body, in fact the possessor of a perfect human frame, he carried gracefully the qualities of his heart and mind. In politics he gave his unswerving adherence to the Conservative party, and in religion he was a Presbyterian, and a member of Knox Church. He was twice married, the first time to Margaret Batters - by whom he had four children, two of whom, John, already referred to, and Mrs. C. Glady, of Galt, survive - who died twenty-five years ago, and on the second occasion to Euphemia Kerr, who survives him. Many old friends now scattered to all parts of the continent, while bowing to the superiority of the Great Leveller and rejoicing that James Campbell was spared so long to life, will sigh as they recall the genial acquaintance of by-gone days, who helped along by his magnanimous sympathy many a fellow man over the difficult stretches in life's pathway. The funeral takes place on Thursday afternoon at 2: 30 o'clock from his late residence to Mount View Cemetery.
