  The Maryhill Settlement: Was Your Family in the Picture? Frances Hoffman On Sunday 17 Sept 1995 the Historical Society of St. Boniface & Maryhill Community will host their annual Heritage Day celebrations. This year's theme will be "The Maryhill Settlement: Was Your Family in the Picture?" David McKnight will be the guest speaker. This is a very special day, beginning with 10 a.m. Mass at St. Boniface Church. People are invited to then share in a pot-luck lunch at St. Boniface School, across from the church. There will be photographic displays and time to speak with others and catch up on family history. The Edward Haller House, adjacent to the school, which serves as a resource centre and museum operated by the Historical Society, will be open. Another part of the celebration is the Heritage Homestead Awards Programme. Owners of properties located in the parish, which have remained continuously in the possession of their family for at least one hundred years, are recognized. A very important part of the day is the car cavalcade to the three wayside shrines. Those who are familiar with this part of Waterloo Region may have seen the shrines and wondered who erected them and what their significance is in today's world. Those who live far-away might wonder what is mean by "wayside shrines." They can be described as being similar to those seen in Europe. They are large way-side crucifixes -- quiet places along the roadside. The original Klein Cross was erected in 1846 by Andrew Klein and his brothers on their farm in Waterloo Township (now Woolwich Township). Legend tells that during a rough Atlantic crossing, Mr. Klein vowed that if the family arrived safely in the New World he would erect a shrine to the glory of God even before he built a home. The Drexler Cross inherited its name from the family of Sebastian Drexler, who purchased his Pilkington Twp. farm, containing the cross, in 1876. The Drexler family assumed responsibility for care and maintenance of the cross for several generations. Robert McNanny, who lived at this farm until 1860, is thought to have erected the cross. The third and last cross, also in Pilkington Townshp, has a more recent history. It was erected in 1908 by James Keleher on the old homestead as a memorial to his parents who had purchased the farm in 1869. Today the shrines are still used by people seeking a quiet place to meditate or pray. A reminder that the village of Maryhill was previously named Rotenburg, and then New Germany (sometimes Little Germany).
