    • Mrs. George D. Black Passes - A life dedicated to her family and God ended on Monday when death claimed Mary Smith Guthrie, widow of George D. Black, at her home on "Wilton Farm," Blenheim townline. The late Mrs. Black had been in indifferent health for some time and eventually succumbed to pneumonia following a fall in her home. Mrs. Black was a lifelong resident of the community and, in her prolonged span of nearly 84 years, she was a sterling example of the fine Scottish characteristics of Christian living and devoted motherhood. A daughter of John Guthrie and Elizabeth Morton, she was born on the farm now owned by her son-in-law, Ernest Cochrane, on the 9th concession. Her father was a Scottish pioneer in the district and her mother, though born near Ayr, originated from the same hardy race. These forebears could be best described as patriarchal families, for their descendants branched out through this community until they now number in the scores. In 1887 she was married to George D. Black, who predeceased her, a year and a half ago. The wedding took place at the farm home now owned by William Kinnaird, Jr., directly across the road from the farm where the couple spent the remainder of their days. This union was blessed with one son, George Inglis, who passed away a few years ago, and three daughters, Mrs. Ernest Cochrane (Margaret), Misses Elizabeth and Mary, residing at home. Working together and living the joys and disappointments of life together, Mr. and Mrs. Black found the years slipped by only too rapidly. But it was a divine blessing that two people so extremely happy should not soon be parted, and they enjoyed the singular distinction of celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary before Mr. Black's death. Originally Mrs. Black was a devout Presbyterian, one of the foremost members of Stanley Street Church in Ayr, but transferred her membership to Knox United when church union was consummated. Her intense interest in the missionary work of the church found an outlet in the Woman's Missionary Society, where her sustained efforts were rewarded with a life membership in the Kate M. Thomson Auxiliary. In social life, she turned to the Ayr Women's Institute which benefited for many years by her unceasing efforts toward its advancement. For the most part, however, Mrs. Black found her life fulfilled in the home, and it was here that she could be found by her neighbors, happily regulating the tenor of her domain. By way of diversion, Mrs. Black became a profound reader and could ably discuss the works of many of the masters. In her death, the community mourns the loss of a woman whose every action bespoke the sterling qualities of the Scottish people who pioneered this district\emdash kindness, integrity, ambition, Christianity and determination. All of these virtues were component parts of Mrs. Black's character, and the impression left by her way of living is indelibly stamped in the minds of her scores of friends and neighbors as an example well followed. Besides three daughters, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. David B, Scott, Galt, and a brother, Morton Guthrie, Ayr. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral was held from her late residence this (Wednesday) afternoon, with service conducted by Rev. W. D. Goodger. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.
