MR. G. HORNBERGER CROSSES THE DIVIDE
WAS RESPECTED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM
On Thursday morning of last week, Elmira lost a respected member of the community, when Mr. Gottlieb Hornberger passed from life unto death.
His had been an interesting career. He was on July 3rd, 1843, born in Combach, Wurttemberg, Germany. As a young man he learned the trade of shoemaker and after completing his apprenticeship he took the Wanderschaft course. That is he visited other towns and cities, under government provision, and improved himself by working in shoe establishments.
The wanderlust seized him and in 1864 he emigrated to America, intending to go to Salem, Ontario, where a brother resided, Mr. Hornberger landed in New York. Before ready to leave or Canada he had the misfortune of being robbed of his money.
This threw him on his own resources. He tried to get work. It was the period of the American Civil War and difficult to get employment. The only door open was enlistment in the Northern army. So Mr. Hornberger enlisted and served one year in the war to abolish slavery.
During the year it so happened that he was in Washington and camped on the president's home grounds the night Lincoln was shot by an assassin.
Before Mr. Hornberger's year of service was over he contracted a fever and lay for three months in a military hospital. This illness left him with a weak heart and was the direct cause of his death last week.
After recovering, he was in June, 1864, discharged from the American army and came to Canada. He settled in Salem, where he opened a shoe store. Later he married there Miss Regina Gelser, who had originally come from his native town. Their union was blessed with three children, John, of Winnipeg; Barbara (Mrs. George Reuter) and Miss Caroline, both of Elmira. Mr. John Hornberger could not attend his father's funeral, owing to his daughter being seriously ill.
In 1877, Mr. Hornberger sold his business in Salem and came to Elmira. He opened a shoe store on West Church street and conducted it until about 23 years ago, when his heart trouble obliged him to retire. His wife predeceased him 21 years ago.
About twenty years ago, Mr. Hornberger succeeded in getting a pension from the American government, which continued until his death.
His funeral was on Saturday afternoon held from the family residence on Park street to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Rev. A. Gailmeier officiated throughout. Interment was made in the Elmira Union Cemetery. Mr. Hornberger was aged 78 years, 3 months and 3 days.
The funeral was, notwithstanding the disagreeable weather, well attended. Many floral offerings were sent. Among these were: large pillow from his children; large wreath from his grandchildren; large spray from Ladies' Aid of Presbyterian Church and others.
The pallbearers were Messrs. George Hehn, Henry Schmidt, Oscar Ruppel, George Klinck, Charles Schutz and C.W. Schierholtz.
The late Mr. Hornberger was a good type of citizens; Godfearing, honest industrious and thrifty. He was successful in business, loved his family and his home and was by his neighbors highly esteemed for his good qualities.
