  VETERAN BUSINESS MAN PASSES AWAY James Gullies, Sr., Succumbs To Lengthy Illness; Came To Preston In 1894 Citizens of Preston today mourned the death of another of its merchants in the person of James Gillies, Sr., for many years a prominent coal and lumber dealer here. His death came about nine o'clock this morning after an illness that caused his retirement from active interest in his business the latter part of 1928. He was in his 85th year. The late Mr. Gillies was born at Vankleek Hill, Ontario, and lived for a time prior to his coming to Preston in 1890 in London Ontario, Idaho and Wisconsin. Ten years before taking up business here, the late Mr. Gillies owned and operated a coal and wood business in Paris, but when he came to town he bought out an established concern which, in recent years, has grown considerably, in the firm of J. M. Gillies and Son of Preston, the deceased was associated with his son, the late Robert Gillies until the latter's death in 1907. James Gillies Jr., has been connected with the firm as a partner since 1912. Through the years of his residence in Preston, the late James Gillies, Sr., took a keen interest in the public life of the district. He served several years on the municipal council of Preston. In politics he was a staunch Conservative. His wife predeceased him in 1910. There survive one son, James Jr., and two daughters, Mrs. (Dr.) McKendrick of Galt and Mrs. Mabel McIntosh of Preston.
