  • Notes
    • ARNOTT, WILLIAM JOSHUA was born in Simcoe County in 1867, attended public school, and without a grammar school education passed his matriculation examination, he began to teach at the age of seventeen, at Tiverton, and later at Magnetawan. In the summers he taught in Manitoba's rural schools. He entered Trinity College and graduated with honours in 1893.

In November of that year he took over the practice of Dr. J. A. McArthur, who was moving to Ohio. A few years later he located at the corner of Weber and Ontario streets. This property was subsequently purchased by Dr. H. M. Lackner and at present is the site of dental offices.

In 1902 he purchased the property on the west side of Frederick Street which had belonged to Dr. Mylius, and converted it into an Institute for the treatment of speech disabilities. This would appear to have been a successful venture as it was continued after his death.

He died suddenly on December 12, 1905 when he was just 44 years of age. As the newspapers stated the cause of death was cerebro-spinal meningitis, his medical attendants found it necessary to report that autopsy findings eliminated the possibility of infectious disease. Blame was attributed to an unspecified middle ear condition.

During the twelve years of his practice he had established himself as a prominent member of the profession, whose death was regarded as a considerable loss. Among his other activities he had been a member of the school board, and at the time of his death was President of the Berlin Musical Society. He was survived by his wife, the former Helen Krug, of Tavistock, and two sons.
