  • Notes
    • Mr. S. Laschinger was born in New Hamburg, Ont., where he passed his youth and school days and where he entered upon the machinist trade in Senator Merner's foundry in 1864. After this he was foreman for fourteen years in the foundry of Mr. S. Merner, a son of the Senator. Then he removed to London, where he was engaged in the London Machine Tool Co.'s Works, two years. In 1887 he came to Elmira where he was manager of the Elmira branch of the Waterloo M'f'g. Co. for nearly 15 years. When the plan was taken over by the Elmira Agricultural Works Company, Mr. Laschinger became principal stockholder and retained the position of manager. As a citizen he is broad minded and liberal. He has taken active part in many measures that tended to advance the material and moral welfare of Elmira. He has been member of the Council and was for years the leading spirit in the administration of the affairs of the Public School, in which capacity he has done really good work, which is appreciated by all.

      ____________

      ELMIRA AGRICULTURAL WORKS.

The above important industry is a branch of the Waterloo Manufacturing Co, with head office at Waterloo, Ont. Mr. Solomon Laschinger is the general superintendent of the Elmira branch. The branch here was established in July, 1888, in what was known as the old school building, which has been somewhat remodeled and other necessary buildings added. The paint shop of this establishment was formerly the first Wesleyan Methodist church of Elmira. The enterprise has been a success from the beginning and an institution that has been of much benefit to the town and a great convenience to the surrounding farmers. The average working force of the plant is about fourteen men. It is equipped with the latest improved machinery and is in every way calculated for the production of first class work. They are now making a specialty of a new and valuable farm feature in the shape of food boilers that are giving excellent satisfaction wherever they are used. They also make a specialty of the latest improved grain crushers, root pulpers, straw and ensilage cutters, and in fact all kinds of agricultural implements from the best patents in the market. I would imagine, after looking over this establishment, that the farmers of this section would give their patronage exclusively to their home enterprise, in preference to foreign concerns when they can get as good an article and as cheap so near their doors. Mr. Laschinger, the genial manager of this branch, was born at New Hamburg in 1848. He commenced learning his trade as a machinist with Mr. Samuel Merner, of that place, on January 1st, 1861, and where he was foreman for fourteen years. After that he worked in London and other places until 1887, and then he came to Elmira and engaged with Absalom Merner, son of his old employer, who a year afterwards sold out to the Company that now operates it, and Mr. Laschinger became the manager. While acting in the capacity of manager of this industry. Mr. Laschinger has been actively identified with the public affairs of the town. He served one term as a member of the village council, has been President of the Mechanics' Institute for three years and a member of the Elmira Board of Trade ever since it was organized. He is also earnestly interested in educational affairs, having been for two years a valuable member of the Public School Board and received a handsome endorsement for his third term at the last school election held this month. He is member of the Evangelical Association and has been Superintendent of its Sunday school ever since he has lived here. He has a wife and family of six children. His eldest son is residing at Johannesburg, South Africa.

Since the above was put in type I understand that Mr. Laschinger was appointed Secretary & Treasurer of the School Board.
