Notes |
- The Elmira Shoe Store - G. W. Schierholtz
Mr. Geo. W. Schierholtz was born on a farm near Elmira. He attended school in School Section No. 11, Woolwich, and came to Elmira in 1872. He was apprenticed to Mr. A. Blatz and later worked at his trade in Conestogo. In 1886 he purchased the business from Mr. Blatz and has since continued it. He has now a well appointed shoe store, where he keeps a large and well assorted stock of shoes and other footwear. He also does repairing. He has the patronage of a great many customers, is a highly respected citizen and is doing well.

Elmira Citizen Passes Away
It becomes our sad and painful duty this week to chronicle the death of a well-known citizen of Elmira in the person of George W. Schierholtz, who passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning after two years illness of anemia. Deceased was born on the Schierholtz homestead, two miles east of Elmira on November 7th 1857. After receiving a public school education at Balsam Grove school, he was apprenticed to the shoe-making trade at which he worked for about 40 years all too faithfully and all too long for the good of his health. Failing health compelled him to leave the bench, that slow and insidious disease anemia, developed and gradually but surely sapped his strength until he fell asleep to wake no more in this world. His sorrowing widow, five children, two grandchildren, his aged mother three brothers and five sisters mourn his early demise.
The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Elmira Union Cemetery Service in St. Paul's Church after burial.

THE ELMIRA SHOE STORE.
Geo, Schierholtz began business on his own account in 1886 in a small shop at the southern end of the village. Said shop was formerly owned and occupied by Mr. Schierholtz's father-in- law, Mr. Aug. Blatz, who by close attention to business and honest dealing had built up a good business in custom work. In 1887 Mr.Schierholtz bought shop of his own, east of Dunke's block and started to keep ready-made boots and shoes. He made it a point. to keep good serviceable stock and sell at a moderate profit. At the beginning of 1897 he took his brother Charles into partnership and they bought out the business of Mr. Schell and moved into the latter's shop next door to Uttley's former stand where they are still doing business. Their business has steadily increased and they look forward to a successful year in 1898. For good and neat repairing and custom work this place is noted far around. They some time ago got the local agency for the celebrated Slater shoes and can now supply the most fastidious with neat and nobby footwear.
