Notes |
- Death has been unusually active in our village and neighborhood during the last week, and has gathered in its cold embrace two of our most respected aged citizens. The first to leave us was Mr. Samuel Starr, who had made Elmira his home only a few years ago. Deceased was born in Baden, Germany, and was brought to America by his parents while he was an infant in arms. After living ten years in the United States he came to Canada, settling with his parents in what is now Wellesley Township. There he passed his youth and subsequently settled on a farm near Dorking, the greater part of which he cleared of its virgin forest. He was also a carpenter by trade. He was married to Catherine Ries, in whom he found a willing helpmate and who now survives him. Fourteen children were the issue of their union, eleven of whom are still living, four sons and seven daughters. Of the latter 2 are at Rochester, while 3 of the sons are living in Manitoba and one on the old homestead near Dorking. Deceased was a staunch member of the R.C. church and was highly respected by all. Many of his old neighbors and acquaintances from a distance paid their last respects to his memory by attending the funeral.

Hero he hewed out a home for himself which he however left later on and moved into Peel Township west of Macton, where one of his sons still resides. About 5 years ago deceased retired from the farm and moved to Elmira. He leaves a sorrowing widow and 4 sons and 7 daughters, 4 ehtidren having pre-deceased him.
