  • Notes
    • John Kay, Watchmaker and Jeweller, Main Street - A little over half a century ago the inhabitants of Galt thought more about what they could get to eat, and how best to be sheltered from the rain and snow, as also what warm and strong clothing they could get to wear, than they did about the luxuries of life; but these days have passed away, and from out the primeval forest a town has arisen - the Manchester of Canada. For its size, there is no town or city in the Dominion that equals Galt for prosperity or the thrift of its people. Now they can afford to invest in watches and jewellery and other luxuries, and on this account there are several first-class stores in this line, principal among which is that conducted by Mr. John Kay, which is located on Main Street. This well-known house was established 30 years ago in a comparatively small way; but as the town grew it grew with it, its business increasing year by year, until now a large trade is conducted in both town and country. The stock carried is handsome and well selected, consisting of gold and silver watches and chains, clocks, wedding and keeper rings, brooches, and all other articles usually to be found in a first-class jewellery store. Watch repairing is made a specialty. Employment is given to three able assistants. The premises occupied are 20x40 feet in dimensions, and are tastefully fitted up, well displaying the elegant stock carried. Mr. Kay is a native of Scotland, but has resided in Galt since his early days. He is well identified with public matters, and is held in the highest regard in the community.
