    Notes:

    Death of Mr. John Quirk

We regret to state that the illness with which this well-known citizen has been for so long afflicted terminated fatally, on Friday last. Mr. Quirk fell a victim to consumption; but the disease was the result of an injury received in the year, 1876, when working at the then new Dickson School. The deceased was a tinsmith by trade, and at the time of the accident was working at the eaves of the building. While so engaged, the scaffold broke, and he and a companion fell heavily among the broken stones on the ground, a distance of over 20 feet. It was not at first thought that Mr. Quirk had received any very serious injuries; but the lapse of time developed the fact that some injury had been sustained by the lungs, and he has never been strong since. He and his brother Alexander carried on business on Main Street for several years, in the stand now occupied by Grantham & Co., but failing health compelled him to retire some time ago. He then tried a more active outdoor pursuit; but the disease had obtained too firm a hold to be eradicated, and gradually prostrated him until for the last few weeks he has been only able to take an occasional drive out. Mr. Quirk never gave up hope, and made a gallant fight for his life; but his insidious foe was not to be defeated, and on Friday brought the struggle to a close. The deceased was son of Mr. Patrick Quirk, of Galt, and was married to a daughter of Mr. John Scott, the well-known cattle-dealer. He leaves a widow and one child. The funeral on Sabbath afternoon last was numerously attended, the large turnout showing the esteem in which he was held by his fellow-townsmen and the sympathy felt for his family and relatives in their bereavement. The services for the dead were held in the R.C. Church, which was crowded to the doors, Rev. Father O'Connell officiating and delivering an admirable address. The cortege then moved to the R.C. cemetery, where the remains were laid in their long home.
