The Blacksmithing needs of the first Mennonite settlers in this district appear to have been attended by Cornelius Pannabecker who came from Pennsylvania in 1810 and some time thereafter set up his forge on the farm at Beaverdale, now owned by Mr. Fred. Lindhorst. David Baer learned the smithing trade with this Cornelius Pennabecker who was his uncle and in 1855 he built the little shop on the Elias Pannabecker farm and started to ply his trade there. Both Samuel Pannabecker and Bernhardt Goebel learned their trades in that shop, and the former succeeded Baer as its proprietor. It is quite probable that David Baer ironed some of the waggons built by John Cober, the waggon maker. Although it is known that Samuel Pannabecker did some ironing for J. N. Cober after he bought his brother John out, and moved to the Tabbert place, it is not likely that this amounted to much because Mr. Cober had his own shop and employed a blacksmith permanently; at first, Thomas Hefferman and later, Barney Goebel. After J. N. Cober moved his carriage business to Hespeler, Mr. Sam. Pannabecker bought that place and continued blacksmithing there along with his farming operations.

    COBER, JACOB N.

Death came with startling suddenness on Saturday, 19th April 1913 at 7 a. m. , in his 71st year. As was his habit, he had arisen early and went into the garden to do some work, a pastime which, to him, had for years been a real pleasure, before partaking of breakfast. When a member of the family went to call him to breakfast, they were shocked to find that he had fallen on the ground, while on his way to the garden. Assistance and medical aid were at once secured but the spark of life had fled. Mr. Cober had been in failing health for some time with an affliction of the heart but had said to friends a short time before his death, that he was feeling very much better. He was the son of the late Nicholas Cober and Nancy Holm and was born in Puslinch Township on January 24, 1844. His grandfather, Nicholas Cober, came from Pennsylvania in 1800. Mr. Cober was married to Nancy Panabaker, daughter of the late David Panabaker, who with the following family, survives: Mrs. Milton Ward of Brandon, SK; Mrs. Russell Gordon and Miss Bertha of Deadle, SK; Mrs. Joseph Darwen of Hespeler; Albert H. of Regina, SK; and Miss Ada, at home. Mr. Cober carried on a wagon-making business on the old homestead in Puslinch for some years, afterwards in partnership with his brother-in-law, the late Cyrus Bechtel, the manufacture of buggies on a large scale, in what is now the Owens Davenport Co. plant in Hespeler and for some years, this was one of Hespeler's principal industries. For many years past, he has carried on a real estate, fire insurance, conveyancing and collecting agency, now under the name of the Cober-Darwen Co. Mr. Cober was a life long Reformer and took a lively interest in the affairs of the municipality. He had been collector of taxes for Hespeler for a number of years. He was a devout member of the Methodist Church, having allied himself with that body in his youth. He led a quiet, exemplary life and became a pillar of strength to the church, of which he was secretary-treasurer and in which he was an usher for over twenty-five years, during which period he had also held office on one or other of the various church boards. Until the past year, during which he has been more or less unwell, he had been wonderfully regular in his attendance, having missed very few Sundays in the past thirty years. In the cause of temperance, he was fearless and outspoken and an ardent worker for the cause. As a member of the Royal Templars, he was outspoken and fearless in advocating the principles of temperance and none other was a more ardent worker in the recent local option campaign in Hespeler. The funeral conducted by Rev. W. B. Smith, assisted by Rev. Small, on Wednesday at 2, after the arrival from the West of several members of the family, from his residence on Lewis St. in Hespeler. It was very largely attended, friends gathering from far and near and there were many beautiful floral offerings. Pallbearers: James Jardine, Wellington Keffer, John R. Phin, John Fisher, C. M. Schultz and Will Hortop. The floral tributes were many, among which was a wreath and pillow from members of the family; anchor from the Ancient Order of United Workmen; wreath from the R. T. of T. ; wreath from G. W. Prout of Winnipeg; spray from Mr. and Mrs. John Darwen; spray from the Darwen family of Brantford; wreath from the Methodist Church Board; a spray from the Sunshine Bible Class; and a spray from Mr. and Mrs. James Jardine. Among those present were: Rev. Peter Cober of New Gormley ; Mr. and Mrs. George Martin of Berlin; Arnold Jansen of Berlin; Rev. Samuel Goudie of Toronto; Mr. Carman of Stratford, representing the Perth Mutual Fire Insurance Co. ; Mr. H. Tolhurst of Toronto; Thomas and James Darwen of Brantford; and Mrs. Jansen of Elmira. Interment Hespeler Cemetery.

Busily engaged in his garden, a pastime which to him had for years been a real pleasure, Jacob N. Cober, one of the town's highly esteemed and respected citizens passed away very suddenly early Saturday morning.

As was his habit, he had arisen early, and proceeded to the garden to do a little work there. After a time Mrs. Cober called him for for breakfast, and receiving no response, went out to the garden and was shocked to find him, lying on the ground. Word of the death of Mrs. Stunn on Tuesday evening, October 8, 1929, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Evans in Beaverton, in her 84th year, after a short illness. She was born in Puslinch Township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Cober, pioneers of Puslinch Township, who lived on the farm now occupied by Donald Currie. There she grew up and married. They lived for a time at Ethel but came back and occupied the Cober homestead for a number of years. About twenty-four years ago, they retired from the farm and came to Hespeler. Her husband predeceased her in 1914 and shortly afterwards, she went to Beaverton to make her home with her daughter. She has been a visitor with relatives here almost every year since. Those who knew her, knew her kindly disposition and neighbourliness. Survived by Mrs. Evans; two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Panabaker of Puslinch Township; Mrs. Abraham Witmer of Vancouver; and one brother, Peter Cober of Kitchener. Notes:

Rev. Peter Cober, "was born May 7th, 1853. (The writer heard him narrate the story of his conversion at the Breslau Camp meeting). When a young man he felt the influence of the Spirit striving with him, but for some time he resisted the Spirit and hence no regeneration was produced. Thus he lived for several years, until he was brought under conviction by a spiritual sermon to which he listened, and after a protracted struggle committed himself to God. He soon joined himself with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. Some years ago he entered the ministry and has been stationed on different fields of labor under the Canada Conference and has so far proved himself to be an able minister and a useful instrument in the hands of God in winning souls for the Lord's kingdom. At the annual conference held at Breslau, Ontario, the last week in March 1895, Mr. Cober was elected presiding elder for the North District. He is married to Martha Steinacker and resides in Stayner, Ontario. Their family consists of six children"

Cober was converted at the age of 21 and the following year he united with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church (now the Evangelical Missionary Church). A few years later Cober moved to Michigan, and in 1881 he began preaching at Brown City as the first pastor of the church there. He also served for a few years in the Indiana-Ohio Conference (at Bethel), being ordained by that conference in 1884. Soon afterward this ordination he returned to Ontario, where he spent most of his 42 years in the active ministry, serving pastorates at Markham, Kitchener, Kilsyth, New Dundee, Shrigley, Breslau, Maryboro, and Hespeler.

Cober was presiding elder of the Ontario conference for 10 years, 1895-1901 and 1903-1907, and chairperson of six conferences, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1905, and 1906. He also served at various times as conference evangelist and as a member of the several boards of the Ontario conference. He was a delegate to general conferences and chairperson of one ( Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, 1896).

In a few respects Peter Cober's record was unique. He was the first subscriber to the Gospel Banner, opened the first city mission of the Ontario Conference (Collingwood, 17 September 1897), and attended 60 consecutive annual conferences (1881 to 1940 inclusive).
In 1923 he retired from pastoral work, residing at Kitchener, Ontario, from then until his death 23 March 1941. Interment was made in Woodlawn cemetery.

    COBER, PETER

An active clergyman of Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church for approximately forty years, prior to his retirement eighteen years ago, in his 87th year, at his home, 21 Chapel St. in Kitchener, following an illness of several months. His last surviving sister, Mrs. Abram Witmer died a few hours earlier at her home in Victoria, BC. Rev. Cober entered the ministry in 1881 and was ordained in 1884. His early years as a clergyman were spent in Michigan and Indiana. In addition, he served several churches in Ontario. Prior to his retirement, Rev. Cober was presiding elder of the M. B. C. Church for ten years. He served as pastor of Kitchener Church for four years. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Cober, he was born on May 7, 1853 on the 3rd concession of Puslinch Township, just east of the townline. In his passing, a descendant of one of the pioneer families was lost. His parents took up residence in a log house on lot 2, shortly after their marriage. At that time, the whole district was a hardwood forest. Wild game was plentiful and deer, bears and wolves were common. Rev. Cober did not live in the old house, however, as the family moved into a new home, which is now still standing on the property. In 1875, he married Martha Steinbacher, who predeceased him in 1935. Rev. Cober was noted, in the ministry, for his cheerful disposition. Surviving are three sons, Vernon L. of Kitchener; Wilfred A. of Buffalo; Milton S. of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Allen Good of Conestoga; Mrs. Harvey Stauffer of Kitchener; and Mrs. William G. Waldron of Brantford. Two sons died in infancy. He was predeceased by two brothers and five sisters. A short private service was held Wednesday, March 26, 1941 at 2 at his residence, followed by public service at Bethany Mennonite Church at 2: 15. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.

He farmed until about nine or ten years ago, when he retired and came into town (Hespeler), purchasing the flour and feed business, which he sold about a year ago. Of an affable disposition, he made many friends, not only among his business associates but among all who knew him. He has been treasurer of the United Church for several years. ___________

Memorable Manitobans: George Waldron Prout (1878-c1980)

    Financial agent, MLA (1916-1920).

Born in Barbados on 5 June 1878, one of ten children of school teachers Joseph Benjamin Prout (1852-1940) and Mary Trotman Hutchinson (1854-1920), he was educated privately and emigrated to Manitoba in 1897, where he worked as a financial agent at Selkirk.

He stood for election in the provincial election of 1914, being defeated by Walter Humphries Montague, by three votes. In 1915, he was elected as a Liberal representative for the constituency of Kildonan-St. Andrews. Given that his mother was identified in the 1911 Canadian census as being of "Negro" ancestry, this would potentially make him the first Black MLA in Manitoba history. He ran in the 1920 and 1927 general elections but was defeated each time.

He was married twice, first on 18 April 1906 to Alice Maude Cober (1874-1907) with whom he had a daughter, Alice Marion Prout (1907-2010), and second on 2 September 1914 to Emma Evans McKinley (1882-1982), daughter of John DeWitt H. McKinley of Dresden, Ohio. They had a son, George Waldron Prout (1915-1915).

By the mid-1930s, he was living at Toronto, Ontario and working as a financial agent. Separated from his wife and daughter in 1937, and formally divorced in 1939, he lived at Toronto for the remainder of his life, possibly serving as a senior executive at Canada Packers.

He died at Toronto, Ontario around 1980.
