'Unprecedented' heritage project sees century-old slate roof replaced

CAMBRIDGE Pieces missing, leaking and faded by more than a century of sun that's how the slate roof of a 10-unit row housing structure on St. Andrew Street in Galt looked just a few months ago.

Thanks to an "unprecedented" undertaking requiring collaboration between the various owners, and a helping hand from heritage funds, the roof has been reborn....

Built in 1885 to house workers at a nearby mill, the 58 to 76 St. Andrew Street row house '96 known as St. Andrew's Terraces '96 was constructed at a cost of about $4,000. The money was put up by physician G.P. Sylvester and J.W. Ward, a local painter and real estate agent.

It was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1989, in part due to its designed slate roof, as well as red and yellow brick....

    A SAD BEREAVEMENT

The news of the sad death of the little daughter of Dr. Sylvester, which occurred at Lindsay on Thursday last, struck a chord of sympathy in many hearts in Galt. Some three weeks ago Mrs. Sylvester and her three children went to Lindsay to visit friends and on Sunday 26th ult., Dr. Sylvester was summoned by telegram to the bedside of his second daughter, Mina Evelyn, who was considered in a dangerous condition. It is needless to say that everything possible was done to relieve the little sufferer, but all to no avail, as the young life was ended on Thursday afternoon. The remains were brought back to the home which she had left in the best of health and youthful spirits only a short time, before and interred, in Trinity cemetery, on Saturday morning, last.
