They reside on her father's farm three miles east of Berlin and have a family of two children named VII Ervine and VII Ida."

Peter M. Weber was born Nov. 1, 1839, on the old Weber homestead which was then a farm but at the present time the Canadian Goodrich Tire factory is built where the old farmhouse stood. In 1860 he was married to Leah Schmitt who predeceased him some years ago. Two children were born to this union of whom one survives -Geo. S., with whom he had has home. Two children were adopted by them - Mrs. Leah Cressman and Mrs. Abram Wambold. He also leaves 1 brother, 4 sisters, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Bro. Weber was converted in his youth and joined the Mennonite Church, which faith he kept to the end. He died near Kitchener, June 13, 1925, at the ripe old age of 85 y. 8 m. 13 d. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, June 16, Bros. Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman conducting the services.

Weber. - Daniel Weber was born in Berlin, Ont., Sept. 11, 1843, and died at his home near German Mills, Ont. Aug. 26, 1920 after a short illness, aged 76 y. 11 m. 15 d. In his youth he was converted and joined the Mennonite Church and had been a member of that body ever since. At the age of 23 he was married to Elizabeth Histand, to which union 4 sons were born 3 of whom survive, who together with 10 grandchildren, also 3 brothers and 4 sisters mourn the loss of a kind parent and brother. His wife predeceased him over 3 years ago. The funeral was held on Aug. 29 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, with Bro. U. K. Weber speaking in English and Bro. Jonas Snider in German. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Weber.-Levi Weber was born Mar. 14, 1850, on a farm where part of the city of Kitchener, Ont., now stands; died Oct. 24, 1923, at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital after about two days' illness with pneumonia; aged 73 y. 7 m. 10 d. He was married to Susannah Bowman who died a little over three years ago. Eleven children were born to this union of whom seven survive (Mrs. Moses Schmitt, Jeremiah, Abram, Burton, Mrs. Harvey Bricker, Mrs. Joseph Cressman, Mrs. S. S. Shantz). There are also a number of grandchildren, besides two brothers and four sisters to mourn his departure. He united with the Mennonite Church in his young years, lived a consistent life to the end, and also had the satisfaction of seeing all his children accept their Saviour. Funeral services Oct. 28 from the home of his son-in-law, Bro. Joseph Cressman, to the First Mennonite Church for services which were conducted by the brethren, U. K. Weber and Abram Gingrich.

Moses Weber," the seventh son of Abraham C. Weber, was born August 29th, 1853, and died August 27th, 1890. He was married three times, first to Hettie, daughter of Henry and Mary (Musselman)Brubacher. She was born April 8th, 1854, and died October 30th, 1875. After her death he was married to Rebecca, daughter of Abraham B. and Lydia (Shantz) Clemmer. The second marriage was blessed with a family of seven children, namely: VII Lydia Ann, VII Abraham, VII Elmina, VII Elam (dead), VII Adline, VII Menno (dead), and VII Elvin. After the decease of second wife which took place April 25th, 1885, he was married to Annie, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Martin) Kinzie. She was widow of Jonathan B. Snyder. There are no children of first and third marriages. Mr Weber resided on a beautiful farm being composed of part of lot No. 117, German Company's Tract, where he died of typhoid fever. His widow has her home with Christian B. Snyder three miles north of the town of Waterloo."

Shirk. - Mrs. Judith Shirk passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Shantz, at Pine Hill, Ont., April 9, 1942; aged 86 y. 9 m. 5 d. The deceased was a daughter of the late Abraham Weber and Judith Martin and was the last surviving member of a family of 16 children. She was born in Freeport, Ont., on July 4, 1855. She was united in marriage to Charles Krempien and resided near Centreville, Ont., until his death 48 years ago. In November 1896, she was again united in marriage, this time to Peter Shirk of Bridgeport, Ont., who predeceased her on Oct. 1, 1919. She was a lifelong adherent and member of the Mennonite Church, in which faith she passed away. One stepson, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport, and 7 stepdaughters -- Mrs. William Kraft, Bridgeport; Mrs. Gideon Bechtel, Baden; Mrs. Catherine Shantz, Kitchener; Mrs. Isaiah Cressman, Kitchener; Mrs. Addison D. Snyder, Bloomingdale; Mrs. Addison S. Snider, Bridgeport; and Mrs. Benjamin Drudge of Bridgeport, also survive. One daughter, Mrs. Charles Himburg of Edmonton, Alta., predeceased her two years ago. The funeral was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Shantz, with services conducted by Bro. Moses N. Weber. -David M. Weber, son of Pre. Abraham Weber, died Aug. 25, 1909; aged 50 years. Bro. Weber had not been well for a number of years. He came to this country about 10 years ago from Ontario. A few weeks before his death he began to get worse and gradually sank until death relieved him. His last days were happy days, praising God and anxiously waiting to depart. He leaves a widow, two sons and six daughters. What is their loss is his gain. Funeral services at Didsbury, Alta., by Pre. Israel R. Schantz and Pre. Finklebein. Interment at Didsbury cemetery. Weber. - Bro. Tilman M. Weber of Bridgeport, Ont., passed away suddenly, Nov. 6, 1940 as a result of a heart attack; aged 77 y. 1 m. 4 d. He was the son of the late Abraham C. and Judith (Martin) Weber. He was born on Nov. 2, 1863 on the Weber homestead at Freeport, Ont., the farm on which the Freeport Sanitarium is now located. He leaves 2 sons (Amos of Bridgeport, and Urias of Hawkeville), also 2 sisters (Mrs. Menno Horst of St. Jacobs and Mrs. Judith Shirk of Bridgeport). He was predeceased by his wife (the late Magdelena Sitler) 49 years ago, also 1 daughter (Marian) in 1929. He was a faithful and lifelong member of the Mennonite Church. He will long be remembered for his quiet, gracious Christian demeanor. His was an example of true Christian relationships with others in Church, city, and community. Services and interment at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., Bro. C. F. Derstine in charge. Theme: "A Hoary Head a Crown of Glory."

After a lengthy illness, Lydia M. Mrs. Abram Weber, died at the home of her brother Tilman M. Weber, at 10: 30 o'clock Saturday morning. Deceased who was in her 68^th year, suffered three strokes. Surviving are one brother, Tilman Weber, Bridgeport, and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Horst, St. Jacobs, Mrs. Peter Shirk, Bridgeport, and Mrs. Mary Weber, Bridgeport.

Mrs. Daniel Martin, 81, died at St. Jacobs early Thursday, May 12, after a brief illness. She was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. Her husband predeceased her 16 years ago.

HENRY W. WEBER

Henry W. Weber died at the Elmira Private Hospital on Wednesday, February 3, at the age of 86 years.

He was born in Waterloo Township and spent his entire lifetime in the Waterloo district as a farm laborer. He was a bachelor.

Surviving is a sister, Miss Lydia Weber of Braeside Home, Preston.

Funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the Erb St. Mennonite Church in Waterloo. Burial will be in Martin's Mennonite Cemetery near Waterloo. Rev. Leonard Haarer will officiate. The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until 1:00 p.m. Saturday when removal will be made to the church.

She was a member of St. Jacob's Mennonite Church.

The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Friday at 1 p.m., then at St. Jacob's Church where the funeral service will be conduced Friday at 2:30 p.m. Bishop Roy S. Koch will officiate. Burial will be in Martin's Mennonite Cemetery.

Weber, Josiah H., eldest son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Histand) Weber, was born Oct. 24, 1866, and passed away peacefully at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on Sept. 10, 1940, after several months of failing health; aged 73 y. 10 m. 17 d. Bro. Weber was a member of the Mennonite Church since his younger years. In 1899 he was married to Hannah Biehn who died about four years ago. He leaves 1 brother, George A. Weber of near Kitchener, Ont. Another brother, Ephraim; passed away six years ago. Weber. - Ephraim H., son of Daniel and Elizabeth Weber, was born June 29, 1875; died June 22, 1934; aged 58 y. 11 m. 23 d. He was born and resided near Kitchener all his life. He is survived by his wife (Maria Steckel), 4 sons (Clayton, Ion, Eldon, Mervin), 1 daughter (Mrs. Laura Hamsher, Berlin, Ohio). and 2 brothers (Josiah H. and George A., of Kitchener). He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church and well esteemed in the community at large. He was known as a man of integrity and dependability and possessed of a quiet dignity and modesty. He was the incarnation of the common virtues of life, so often undervalued, nevertheless they are what make men and nations great. His self-controlled speech was a desirable quality that all Christians might well covet. His sudden passing in the night while asleep is a loud call to all to prepare to meet their God in peace. His passing will leave a vacant place, and memory will treasure his personality "till we meet again." The services were conducted at the First Mennonite Church, in charge of Bros. C. F. Derstine and 0. Burkholder. Sermon, "The Ministry of Hard Knocks and Affliction." II Cor. 4 : 16,17.

Weber.-George Abram Weber passed away at his home at Parkway, Kitchener, Ont. , on Thursday, Aug. 21, 1941, after an illness of about six weeks. Bro. Weber was born on June 24, 1879 and passed away on the farm of his birth; aged 62 y. 1 m. 28 d. He is survived by his wife (nee Malinda Woolner), with whom he was joined in holy wedlock 39 years ago at Nachez; also by 5 daughter, Vera, Mrs. Urbin Snider of Bloomingdale, Mabel, Mrs. Clayton Siebert, at home, Edna, Mrs. Edgar Martin of Elmira, Gladys, Mrs. Roy Shantz of Kitchener, and Mildred, at home. Eight grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by 1 daughter who died in infancy. Bro. Weber's life and service was a rich boon to the church that he so faithfully served. He was known as a kind, patient, faithful and loyal servant of God. He will be missed, his helpful counsel will be missed, but we mutually rejoice in the fullness of his life, and his usefulness well nigh to the close of his life. Bro. Weber served the First Mennonite Church as Deacon for 30 years. He was Secretary of the Mennonite Mission Board for 25 years, Treasurer of the Bible School Board for a number of years, Member of the Deacons' Welfare Board. Bro. Weber during his lifetime held many more positions of trust. A loving tribute of respect was rendered Bro. Weber by his fellow deacons, ministers, and bishops, some fifty, who rose when his body was carried into the church building, then viewed the body first, and proceeded together to the cemetery, where they sang, "Blest be the tie that binds." The funeral services were in charge of the pastor, Bro. C. F. Derstine, and associate minister, Bro. Merle Shantz, conducted at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. Weber, Cyrus C., son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Weber, was born April 5, 1869; died after a long illness, April 23, 1961, at Kitchener, Ont.; aged 92 y. 18 d. His first wife Susannah, died in 1897. On March 20, 1900, he was married to Maria Shantz, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons (Clarence and Lloyd), 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held April 25, in charge of C. F. Derstine and Edgar Metzler.

Married on Feb. 13, 1895, to Silas Good, who died Nov. 7, 1938. Three children preceded her in death. Survivors: 2 sons and one daughter (Clayton, High River; Vera-Mrs. Joel Reist, Westward Ho, Alta., and Gordon, High River), 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers. She with her husband and 2 children homesteaded near High River in 1900. The Mt. View Mennonite Church was built on ground donated by them. The first winter she lived on the homestead she saw only two women during the entire winter. Funeral services were held at the Mt. View Church with C. J. Bowman, --Velina, daughter of the late Abraham and Susana (Creesman) Weber, was born near Kitchener, Ont., June 11, 1875; departed this life at the High River Hospital, after some weeks of illness, May 13, 1951; aged 75 y. 11 m. 2 d. On Nov. 7, 1894, she was united in marriage to Tilman Bowman of Kitchener, Ont., where they resided for about ten years. In 1904 she moved with her husband and family to the Aldersyde district in Alberta, where she resided until her death. To this union were born 3 children. Surviving are 1 daughter (Nellie-Mrs. Lloyd Moyer, Aldersyde, Alta., with whom she made her home), 1 son (Delton, Aldersyde, Alta.), and 2 brothers (Cyrus, Kitchener, and Manasseh, Ashland, Oreg.). She was preceded in death by one son (Gordon), in 1926 and her husband in 1941. She accepted Christ in early life, uniting with the Mennonite Church, and was a faithful member until her departure. Funeral services were held in the Mount View Mennonite Church near Aldersyde, Alta., May 16, in charge of C. J. Ramer and H. R. Boettger. Text: Rev. 14: 13. Burial in the adjoining cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her departure her sorrowing husband, 2 sons (Lloyd, Rosebank; Leighton, Petersburg), one daughter (Naomi-Mrs. Ozias Gingrich, Elmira), 10 grandchildren, 3 brothers (Jeremiah, Guernsey, Sask.; Abram, Tofield, Alta.; Burton, Lockport, N.Y.), and one sister (Susie-Mrs. S. S. Shantz, Markham), besides many other relatives and friends. She was a very devoted wife and mother, and will be greatly missed by all. Funeral services were in charge of her pastor, Bro. C. F. Bricker-Melissa Weber, beloved wife of Bro. Harvey Bricker of Alsask. Sask., was born Dec. 1, 1889, in Waterloo Co., Ont., died in the General Hospital, Calgary, Alta., March 20, 1926; aged 36 y. 3 m. 20 d. She leaves a sorrowing husband with a family of three duaghters (sic) and an adopted son.. Towards fall of 1925 she began to complain of not being well, and as there were no signs of improvement she was brought to the home of Bro. E.W. Bricker, Calgary, where for some time she was under the doctor's care. Later it was decided that an operation was necessary, which took place in the General Hospital, and for some time good hopes were held out for her recovery. She however took a turn for the worse and though many prayers ascended to the throne of grace in her behalf, she gradually became weaker and finally passed on to her reward. While under the hand of affliction she suffered considerably and frequently expressed a desire to leave the world and be with Christ. On March 21 a funeral service was conducted by E. Hansell at the funeral home of Foster & Foster, Calgary, after which the remains were brought to Aldersyde and from there taken to the home of Bro. T.E. Bowman on March 22 where the relatives of the departed sister met and a short service conducted by Bro. I. Miller and then taken to the Mt. View Mennonite Church for funeral service and burial. Services at the church conducted by N.B. Stauffer. Text, Jno. 16: 16, selected by Sister Bricker some weeks before her death. Bro. Bricker has the sympathy of a large circle of the brotherhood and friends who with him in humble submissiveness say, "Thy will be done."

Shantz. - Elmina C., daughter of the late Moses and Rebecca Weber, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., Aug. 7, 1881; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital Sept. 12, 1930; aged 49 y. 1 m. 5 d. At the age of 9 years she was left an orphan and was taken into the home of her uncle, Daniel Weber, where she grew to womanhood. On Jan. 9, 1907, she was married to Norman Shantz. To this union 3 sons and 2 daughters were born. One daughter died in infancy. She is survived by her husband and children, and 2 brothers and 1 sister who mourn her departure. In early youth she accepted Christ and became a member of the Mennonite Church, in which faith she lived an exemplary Christian life, and left bright evidence for the future. She was a member of the Hagey congregation. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, at Kitchener Sept. 15. Bros. Benjamin B. Shantz and Milo Kauffman were in charge. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Bauman.-Adeline (Weber) Bauman was born Nov. 2, 1885; died at Floradale, Ont., Mar. 6, 1928; aged 42 y. 4 m. 4 d. She was united in marriage to Emanuel Bauman of Floradale, Ont., Jan. 25, 1925. She leaves a sorrowing husband, three step-children (Florence, Orrie and Howard), two brothers, and two sisters. Sister Bauman was in bed seven weeks, suffering from inflammatory rheumatism. She was recovering nicely and was looking forward to again being about her household duties, when without a moment's warning she passed away because of a weak heart. Her death was a shock to the community, nevertheless we mourn not as those who have no hope. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church till death. The Floradale congregation, of which she was a member, will miss her greatly. Bro. Bauman and family need our sympathy and prayers. Funeral services were conducted on Mar. 9, at the Elmira Mennonite Church and her body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Bros. Abram Gingerich and Oliver Snider preached. Texts, Luke 13: 4; Isa. 3: 10.

On June 21, 1910, he was married to Susanna Frey, who survives. In 1912 they moved to Arcadia Valley, Alta., and in 1952 they returned to Waterloo. Funeral services for Ivan Weber, 70, of Didsbury, who died Saturday in Calgary, were conducted in the United Missionary Church in Didsbury by Rev. Ray Shantz at 2:30 p.m. Monday, with burial following in the Didsbury cemetery.

Born in Bridgeport, Ont., Mr. Weber moved to the Didsbury district 58 years ago. He homesteaded and farmed in the district until his retirement in 1927.

He is survived by three brothers. two in Didsbury and one in Victoria, B.C.

The funeral of Mrs. Ira Levagood who died at her home west of Didsbury on Tuesday, February 23rd, 1937, was held Friday afternoon at the Evangelical church, and the interment took place at the Didsbury cemetery.

Sylvia Weber was born at Bridgeport, Ontario, on May 9th, 1891. She came to Didsbury with her parents in 1900 and resided on their farm two miles north of town. She was educated in the Didsbury schools. In September, 1915, she was married to Mr. Ira D. Levagood and resided on the farm, six miles west of town, up to the time of her death.

Five children were born to the union, Delbert, Vera, Marion, Glen, who reside at home, and Jean who died in infancy.

Besides her husband and children, deceased leaves to mourn her loss, two brothers and six sisters, Ivan, of Didsbury; Peter, of Hanna; Mrs. Fred Holmes and Mrs. Bert Powell, of Vancouver; Mrs. Arthur Thorne, of Berkley, California; Mrs. Bernard Mitchell, of Louisville, Kentucky; and Mrs. W. Weber. - Marian Weber, only daughter of Tilman and Magdalena Weber, of Bridgeport, Ont., was born Sept. 18, 1890; died Feb. 1, 1929; aged 38 y. 4 m. 14 d. She was converted when a young girl and united with the Mennonite Church to which faith she remained steadfast until death. She is survived by her father and two brothers, Amos and Urias. Her mother died when she was quite small. She was a dutiful and affectionate daughter and sister and quite early in life took her mother's place in the home. She underwent an operation for goitre which proved fatal the following day. About 20 years ago during a severe sickness she was privileged to have a glimpse into the supernatural realm and saw her mother with the angels. The angels told her they would come again. During the last hours of her life, she had a similar vision, but this time the angels told her that she could go along. Her last words were "I am going home," and her spirit quietly slipped away to be with Jesus, her mother, and the holy angels. Her life and testimony have left a profound impression on all those who knew her. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., on Feb. 4, 1929, conducted by Bros. C. F. Derstine, S. F. Coffman and pastor Wing. Text, Isa. 40: 1; Psa. 23: 4. Interment in the cemetery adjoining, beside her mother.

"Eldon D. Weber, President of OGS, 1975-1977, died on 26 February 2004 at the age of 90. He was born in Berlin, Ontario, in 1913, the son of Ephraim Weber and Maria Steckle, and remained proud of his connection with both these pioneer Waterloo County families. He was a longtime member of the Pennsylvania-German Folklore Society, and was present at the PGFS meeting when OGS was founded. He became active provincially at an early stage, serving as a provincial director 1970-1971, and as vice-president before becoming president.

Among his undertakings at the provincial level was a projected series of county-wide gravestone readings, Monumental Transcriptions (1977). Unfortunately, only the first volume, concerning Simcoe County, was published. He chaired Seminar 1976, held in Waterloo. OGS awarded him an honorary life membership in 1984.

Throughout the 1970s he was also active locally, helping to found Waterloo-Wellington branch in 1973, editing its newsletter for many years and serving as chair 1978-1982. Access to two ledgers of 1870s Waterloo County births and deaths led him to publish them, many years before the Registrar-General officially released the information to the public.

As well as genealogies of the Weber and Steckle families, his greatest contribution to family history in Ontario was in the republication of Ezra Eby's Biographical History of Waterloo Township (1895) in 1971. He combined the original volumes and the 1931 supplement with maps and other new material and, most usefully, an every-name index. This publication, referred to locally simply as 'The Eby Book', is the first port of call for Waterloo County genealogists. It had become a rare book, but the Weber edition is available in libraries across North America.

His reputation in the community meant that many Mennonite families deposited copies of documents with him. His papers are now at Conrad Grebel College, University of Waterloo.

In addition to his genealogical work, Eldon was active in the United Church of Canada, both locally in Kitchener-Waterloo and at conference level. The KW Council of Churches named him Layman of the Year in 1969. He also served on the board of the KW Humane Society for almost forty years from 1944.

Following his retirement from active committee work, his second marriage to Helen Merner gave his old age a new outlook and much happiness."

SCHMITT, Lloyd E. -- At St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Saturday, April 25, 1981, as a result of a heart attack, Lloyd E. Schmitt, aged 68 years, of 25 Alderside Dr., New Dundee. Mr. Schmitt was born in Alberta, and was a son of the late Moses Schmitt and the former Leah Weber. He was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, and had owned and operated Lloyd Schmitt Equipment Ltd. in Kitchener, and before his retirement at 24 Laurel St., Waterloo. He is survived by his wife the former Dorothy Shantz; one son Gerald of Cambridge, one daughter Mrs. Willard (Marlene) Snider of Breslau; brother of Leighton of Kitchener and Mrs. Naomi Gingrich of Cambridge. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Steven and Dale Snider. Mr. Schmitt's family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, from 2-4: 30 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday. Passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Nithview Community, New Hamburg. Wanda was born 98 years ago in Irricana, Alberta, a daughter of the late Burton and Irene (Spitzmesser) Weber.

Wanda is predeceased by her first husband Willard Toman in 2002 and her second husband Kurt Kaethler in 2005

Wanda was the oldest member of Breslau Mennonite Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading. Wanda was always intrigued with a good discussion on current events and theology. In her later years at Nithview, Wanda enjoyed a good game of Crokinole and Scrabble. Wanda and Willard farmed first near Breslau where the children were born, then in the Hanover area for 30 years.

After retiring from farming, they moved to Chesley, then to Fairview Mennonite home in Cambridge. Wanda lived her last 13 years in Nithview Community in New Hamburg.

Suddenly, at the Guelph General Hospital, on Friday, September 19, 1947, in her 83^rd year. Wife of the late W. W. Buchanan. Her husband, Walter W. Buchanan was the second person to succumb to injuries received, when two cars collided Thursday night on Paisley Road, four miles from Guelph. The first death was his wife, of the same age, who passed away shortly before noon yesterday. Their son, Wallace Buchanan of 332 Glengrove Ave., Toronto, believed driver of the car, is still in critical condition, with possibly a fractured skull. Rodney Weber, 18, said driver of the second car, escaped serious injury, suffering chiefly from shock. Mrs. Buchanan, was a daughter of Gilbert Amos and Mary Anne Dickieson and was born in Paisley Block, Guelph Township. She was active in Paisley Block Women's Missionary Society. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan planned to celebrate the 50^th anniversary of their marriage next March. They leave three sons and a daughter: Robert Loyal Buchanan and Gilbert Amos Buchanan, both of Guelph Township; Walter Wallace Buchanan of Toronto, who also was hurt critically in the accident; and Margaret Joy (Mrs. Melvin Turner) of Montreal; also five grandchildren. Rested at the McLanaghan and Ross Funeral Home, 206 Norfolk St. , Guelph until Tues. , Sept. 23 at 11. Thence to Knox Presbyterian Church, where funeral service was held at 2. Entombment Woodlawn Mausoleum.

Friday the Grim Reaper, death called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bowman near hear and took from them their infant son, Paul Howard, aged six-months. The deceased child had been down with an attack of La Grippe, and death came unexpectedly. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, burial taking place at the Cemetery at Bloomingdale Meeting House where service was held. The Rev/s Jesse Martin and Jonas Snider conducted the service. The bereaved family had the sympathy of the community.

FISCHER, Alta Mae (nee Snider) - Passed away at The Westmount Nursing Home, on Friday, July 29, 2005, in her 91st year. Beloved wife and lifelong companion of 64 years of the late Albert John Fischer. Loving mother of Murray (Nancy) Fischer of Kitchener, Eleanore (Terry) Knarr of Holland Centre, Carol (the late Gottlieb) Pedde of Everett, Washington, Bruce (Betty) Fischer of Kitchener, Gail (Michael) Fischer-Holthuysen of Vancouver, B.C., Brenda (Robert) Becker of New Dundee, Donna (Carder) Gropp of Kingston and Debbie Fischer of White Rock, B.C. and brother Art Snider (Joan) of Fergus. Sadly missed by 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and brother-in-law, Robert Halcrow. Predeceased by her parents, Walter and Mary (nee Krampien) Snider. One brother, Blake Snider and two sisters, Olive Baechler (the late Ted) and Miriam Halcrow. Alta's passion was her husband and family. She enjoyed word searches, bingo, visits from family and friends and was an avid gardener in her younger days. Before moving to the retirement residence, Alta and Albert enjoyed trips to the Waterloo Recreation Centre for Senior Day. She was also a longtime member of Bridgeport United Church. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of The Westmount for the loving care of Mom over the last two and a half years and to Rev. Randy Magnus of Roseville United Brethren and Rev. Brenda Woodall of Bridgeport United Church for their visits and ongoing support. At Alta's request, cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to share their memories of Alta during a memorial visitation on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the Westmount Funeral Chapel, 1001 Ottawa Street South (at Westmount), 743-8900. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel, on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at 1 p.m.Donations to the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre would be greatly appreciated by the family. BERGEY, Lorna Lucille (nee Shantz) - Died peacefully at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, on Saturday, March 22, 2009, in her 88th years. Lorna was the loving wife of the late David D. Bergey who predeceased her in 1980. Survived by sons, Edward (Karen Rudy) and Robert (Linda Penner) both of Brampton, Grandchildren Christopher (Lisa Moretti) Bergey of Woodbridge, Suzanne (Jeremy) Stacey of Brampton. Fondly remembered by eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by siblings, Jean Culb (Vineland), Kenneth and Marie Shantz, Wilbur and Kay Shantz, Joanne Hunsberger, Beth and Paul Good all of New Hamburg and Kathryn Leatherman of Elkhart, Indiana and sister-in-law, Vaughn Waddle. Predeceased by Clyde Shantz. Lorna was a resident of Fairview Suites, Cambridge and formerly resided in Eastwood Community (Kitchener), Haysville and New Dundee. In 1988 Lorna retired form Bergey's Cheese that she and her husband David had operated for 38 years. She tirelessly volunteered her time and held leadership positions throughout her life in a variety of Mennonite Church and Community organizations. These include Mennonite Women's Mission Service Commission, New Dundee Public Library, Doon Pioneer Village, North Waterloo Cancer Society, Waterloo Historical Society, Historical Committee of the Mennonite Church of North America, Mennonite Archives of Ontario (Conrad Grebel), Pennsylvania Folklore Society of Ontario, Mennonite Historical Society of Canada, Mennonite Bi-Centennial Commission, MCEC Historical Committee, Mennonite Historical Society of Canada, Mennonite Historical Society of Ontario and Ontario Mennonite Credit Union, in many of these organizations Lorna pioneered as the first woman to hold leadership positions. Lorna was a fervent supporter of the Mennonite Church through the Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Foundation, and Mennonite Economic Development Association. Her encyclopedic knowledge of Mennonite History allowed her to assist many history writers over several decades. In addition to her long list of historical articles and sketches she has also been an acknowledged source in many local histories. At the time of her death, Lorna was a member of the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Relatives and friends may visit at Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home and Chapel (621 King St. W., Kitchener) on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at First Mennonite Church (800 King St. E., Kitchener) on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 10 a.m. As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee by calling the funeral home at 519-745-9495.

A lover of local history

As one of Waterloo Region's most respected Mennonite historians, Lorna Bergey was honoured many times. Academics called on her vast knowledge when writing books, yet such attention made her uncomfortable. "To her, she was just a farm wife with a Grade 8 education," said her son, Ed Bergey of Brampton. By her late 60s, Lorna was finally feeling confident and deserving of the respect, but it would never be anything she'd brag about. Her Mennonite upbringing of humility meant the work was important, not the accolades. Ed said that Lorna was both "happy and mortified" at every new award.

Lorna was born the eldest of eight children to a Mennonite farming family near Baden. In Grade 8 she passed her high school entrance examinations but dreams of an education would be dashed by responsibilities at home caring for siblings and an ailing mother.

In a 2001 Record interview she said, "Can you imagine, I was only 12 years old? From this experience, I learned that girls and women were expected to serve their appointed homes, but I also learned when something needs to be done, you do it." Lorna lived up to those responsibilities even though she would also fill every free moment absorbing books and information, particularly related to her heritage.

She once said, "I don't think I ever thought of it as being interesting to anyone else. I don't think that the generation of my parents felt too comfortable exposed to the public view. For my generation, I sort of feel that credit should be given where credit is due."

Lorna's life had been about caring for others, until she met David Bergey at a church function and fell in love. Her father, however, dictated there would be no marriage until she turned 19. "On May 29, on her 19th birthday, she got married," Ed said. The couple raised two sons, Ed and Robert, while running a farm, though due to poor financial returns David sold his cattle, did contract work for other farmers and expanded a cheese-making business at their farm, started as a sideline by his grandmother in 1872.

In 1954 David was seriously injured after plunging 14 metres from a silo. He spent the rest of his life in and out of hospital. It was up to Lorna to take charge. According to her sons, she did a splendid job. She built Bergey Cheese into a profitable business by closing down their own small cheese-making operation and selling selected products from other companies. Eventually Bergey Cheese ran stores in Toronto and Hamilton as well as vendors' stalls at five farmers' markets.

"There was no health insurance in those days," Lorna once recalled. "So two years of mounting medical bills made it a sink-or-swim proposition. It was our bread and butter."

In 1988, eight years after David died, Lorna closed the successful business, which gave her time to pursue historical research.

In 2001, she was part of a documentary produced by the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society of Ontario and she was a veteran volunteer archivist at Conrad Grebel University College, largely responsible for creating the Mennonite collection.

"She was very gifted at getting people to donate things," said Sam Steiner, now a retired archivist at the college. He talked about how Lorna stayed on to help him after he was hired in 1974 and how her rich, detailed stories gave vibrancy to historical facts. She was "the person who helped to gather the building blocks for people writing about history."

Lorna was also the first woman to serve in leadership roles in numerous Mennonite historical societies. Sam remembers her as a serious woman, plainly dressed and never without a hat. Ed added that while his mother was not the soft, cuddly sort, she was a good mother, one they admired for her resilience, her toughness and honesty. "She took life as it came and lived her faith," said Ed^.

Shantz, Clyde Franklin, son of Walter and Selina (Shirk) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., June 18, 1933; was killed instantly April 22, 1960, at Bridgeport, Ont., while employed with a paving company; aged 26 y. 10 m. 4 d. On July 20, 1957, he was married to Vaughn Sararus, who with a 7-month-old daughter (Cathleen Suszanne) survives. Also surviving are his parents, 2 brothers (Kenneth, Plattsville; and Wilbur, Petersburg), and 5 sisters (Lorna--Mrs. David Bergey, New Dundee; Jeanne--Mrs. George Culp, Vineland; Joanne--Mrs. Maurice Hunsberger, Hew Hamburg; Kathryn, Goshen, Ind.; and Beth--Mrs. Paul Good, Plattsville).
