LUDWIG FOERSTER

Another of the old pioneers of Waterloo county has passed away in the person of Mr. Ludwig Foerster, who died on the 23^rd inst., at the home of Andrew Foerster, his son, who lives between here and St. Clements. Deceased was born in Baden, Germany, and came to Canada in 1835. He settled in Wellesley township when it was yet a "howling wilderness", and hewed out for himself a home in the woods. By dint of hard work and economy, coupled with sterling honesty, he contrived to leave to his children a fair share of this world's goods. He leaves 9 children, 63 grandchildren, and 50 great grandchildren. His remains were buried in the Lutheran cemetery, here, last Saturday. He had reached the ripe age of 90 years, 2 months and 17 days.

On Thursday of last week there were buried in the Lutheran cemetery have the earthly remains of Jacob Foerster, who died of Bright's disease raving been seriously ill only a week. Deceased had been twice married. His first wife died in 1857 and the second one seven years ago. One son of the first wife survives and 2 sons and 2 daughters of the second wife. For a number of years he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. John Rank, Con. 7, Wellesley township. He leaves four brothers, who were present at the funeral, namely, Frederick and Andrew, of Heidelberg, Louis of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Valentine, of Cranbrook, Ont.

Frederick Foerster

A well known resident of the northern part of the county passed away last evening in the person of Frederick Foerster, age 83[?] years, who died at his home in Heidelberg after an extended illness. The deceased was a native of the district of St. Clements and had remained on the old homestead for many years, retiring from farming about [unreadable] years ago. He was a faithful and valuable member of the Heidelberg Lutheran church being one of those who [unreadable] with the [unreadable] of the [unreadable]. He was also a former [unreadable] of the church. Surviving him are his wife [unreadable] Ludwig and four sons and one daughter who are John of [unreadable], George and Robert of Vancouver, B.C., Robert of [unreadable] Mich., and Mathilda at home. There are also two sisters of the deceased. Mrs. Frederick Meyer of South Bend, Indiana, and Mrs. George Schneider residing near Philipsburg. Three brothers died last year. ADAM STEISS

One of Wellesley township's earliest settlers passed away on Wednesday afternoon of last week in the person of Adam Steiss, Esq., at his home in Heidelberg, after about three months illness, culminating in a paralytic stroke, which was the immediate cause of his death. He was born in Germany but came to St. Clements with the family in 1847, an infant. In 1856 he bought the Heidelberg hotel, which he conducted continuously for about 50 years. He also carried on a general store and for nearly 30 years has been postmaster. Mr. Steiss was also a manufacturer of limburger cheese, being the first to engage in this business in Canada. Assisted by his sons he conducted these businesses with great success. In 1868 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Huehnergard who survives him. Their children are: John, in Berlin ; O. J. and J.A.,Heidelberg ; Wm., Guelph; Mrs. Henry Hahn, Tavistock ; Mrs. Rev. Zarnke, of Pembroke, and Mrs. Herman Hats[?], Waterloo. The funeral on Saturday was attended by an immense throng who gathered to show their esteem for their deceased friend, to whose sorrowing family the sympathy of the entire community is extended.

ADAM STEISS

The most conspicuous figure in a business point of view in Heidelberg is undoubtedly the gentleman whose name appears above. Mr. Steiss is unquestionably the architect of his own. fortunes, and that the wealth he enjoys today he owes under Divine Providence to the exercise of that industry which has been the guiding principle of bis life. Dispite every disadvantage incident to the life of a foreigner in a strange land with limited means and unfamiliar with the customs of the country of his adoption, has raised himself to his present position of influence and usefulness in society.

Mr. Steiss is a native of Baden, Germany, where he was born in 1845, and came to this country with his parents when he was yet in the helpless condition of childhood. He hes been a resident of this section for nearly fifty years. Having been deprived of the guiding influence and protection of a father years before he reached manhood's estate, he was compelled to rely upon his own resources, which constituted willing hands and a firm determination to earn a livelihood, and the means to afford him comfort during the inevitable days of old age. In early manhood he was an ordinary day laborer, and when about fifteen years of age assisted the masons in building the stone foundation of the large brick hotel and mercantile estabishment which in after years he acquired and of which his today the sole owner.

He has been engaged in the hotel business now for over thirty years and is the oldest hotel man in Waterloo county who has remained continuously in one location. In the latter capacity he is among the few exceptions who adhere strictly to the enforcement of the liquor laws, and for the many years he has been, so engaged has a record seldom achieved by tavern keepers, having never been compelled to pay a fine Not only is he a faithful observer of the laws which governs the keeping of taverns, but his hotel is admirably kept for the comfort and accommodation of the public. The house is splendidly furnished throughout and abundance of the good things of this life are daily supplied on the tables. One of the most admirable features of this hotel is the entire absence of boisterous conduct, a feature that is often lamentably conspicuous in village taverns. Here the chronic lounger and patron of free drinks is not encouraged to tarry.

Mr. Steiss as I can learn, is responsible for Heidelberg being the first place in Canada to introduce the manufacture of the famous Limburger cheese. He is now quite extensively engaged in the manufacture of that commodity, and has been so engaged on the past nineteen or twenty years. The daily output of his factory is wheat 150 pounds. The article he manufactures in a superior quality and finds a ready market all over the province, large quantities of it being also shipped to Manitoba, British Columbia and the Maritime Provinces. All the whey derived from the manufacture of the cheese is utilized by Mr. Steiss himself, as fattens, slaughters and ships quite large number of hogs in the course of a year . He is therefore quite an important distributor of cash among the farmers, and one who is bound to keep business moving in the village.

Under the same roof adjoining the hotel is his mammoth general mercantile establishment. In the rear end of this establishment is located the post office, Mr. Steiss being the postmaster, for which office he was commissioned January, 9, 1879. The mercantile business was formerly conducted by the Doersal Bros, and subsequently under the firm sans of Doersal & Steiss. About eighteen years ago Mr. Steiss became sole proprietor of the business, and has conducted it with remarkable success ever since. The stock at present is a very large one, comprising everything in the general merchandise line, including hardware. The lower floor is packed to its utmost limits, as is also the upper floor and adjoining rooms. In a large cool cellar is kept the different syrups, butter, etc. This latter department is the at the writer has entered for some time. Mr. Steiss secures his own ice for which he has a large ice house. This is directly over the cold storage room used for the Limburger cheese after it has been taken from the curing room.

Mr. and Mrs. Steiss have reared a family of seven children - four sons and three daughters

Oscar J. has the management of the mercantile department and is a clever young business man. He has a bicycle department is connection, in which he keeps the best make of bicycles for sale. With the assistance of his agent, Mr. P. Kreutzweiser, of St. Clements, be has disposed of forty this season.

Albert J. superintends the cheese manufacturing department and displays admirable business qualifications, William, the youngest son, is also engaged in this department.

John H. is at home. He is the eldest son, and is giving a good account as an agent.

Emeline is the wife of Mr. H. G. Hahn, shoe dealer, of Guelph Mary Ann is the wife of Rev. C. F. Zarnke, of Pembroke, and Clara is living at home.

In rearing this family and building up his large basics interest, Mr. Steins has had valuable help in his industrious wife. She is entitled to a greal deal of credit for the success that him attended him is his business career. She is daughter of J. G. Huehnergard well know farmer at the village.

WELLESLEY, APRIL 11-Mrs. Jacob Streicher of Wellesley, age 79, died at her home here last evening as a result of a heart attack. Deceased was born at Bamberg on Jan. 31, 1860.
Surviving are her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Walter Daub, and Misses Gusta and Clara of Kitchener. Mary at home; one son, Jacob Jr. at home; one brother, Jacob Foerrster of Elmira; one sister, Mrs. Mary Rank of Heidelberg.
Funeral services will be private from the home on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with public services at the Missouri Lutheran church. Rev. C. A. Kramer will officiate.

Funeral of Louis Foerster.

The funeral of the late Louis Foerster, formerly of Heidelberg, who died at Ayton, was held there recently. Mr. Foerster was about 74 years of age. Survivors include six sisters, Rose Foerster of Kitchener, Mrs. Jacob Ziegler, Mrs. Louis Rank, Mrs. Wm. Hackbart and Mrs. Wm. Hass of Heidelberg, and Mrs. A. Wettlaufer of Tavistock, and one brother, Edward, of Detroit. One brother, William, who resided in Waterloo, predeceased him.

Heidelberg - An aged resident of Heidelberg, Mrs. Louis Rank, 78, passed away early Monday morning at her home, after a long illness. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday from the residence to St. Peter's Lutheran Church for service. Rev. K. Knauff will officiate. Interment in the Heidelberg cemetery.

The late Mrs. Rank, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Foerster, was born near Heidelberg, Dec. 28, 1860. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Andrew Lips, Bamberg, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Ziegler, Mrs. Wm. HEIDELBERG, Jan. 1. - Mrs. Jacob M. Ziegler, 79, formerly Miss Jeannettle Foerster, died Dec. 31 at her late home in Heidelberg after a brief illness. She was the widow of the late Jacob M. Ziegler, who predeceased her nine years ago. She was born Nov. 2, 1864, In Wellesley Township, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. Andrew Foerster. Mrs. Ziegler was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Heidelberg.

Hhe is survived by two sons, Harry and Herman of Heidelberg: four daughters, Mrs. Edward Hartung. Mrs Lydia Ronder, Mrs. William J. Battler and Miss Elsie Ziegler, all of Heidelberg, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchlidren. A daughter, Annie, predeceased her. Also surviving are one brother, Edward Forester of Detroit, and three sisters, Mrs. William Haas and Miss Rose Foerster of Kitchener and Mr. Elizabeth Wettlaufer of Tavistock.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 o'clock from her late residence to St. Peter's Lutheran Church at 3 o'clock. Rev. Henry Nuhn, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Heidelberg Lutheran Cemetery. Remains are resting at her late residence.

MRS. EMMELINE HACKBART

Mrs. Emmeline Hackbart, 69, of near Heidelberg, widow of the late William Hackbart, passed away at St. Mary's hospital on Tuesday, July 9, after a short illness. Born near Heidelberg, deceased had lived there all her life. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran church, Heidelberg.

Surviving are one son, William of Hamilton, two daughters, Ida of Hamilton and Elizabeth, Mrs. William Quehl, RR 1, Bamberg, and two grandchildren. One son Herman predeceased her three years ago. One brother, Edward Foerster of Detroit, and four sisters, Miss Rose Foerster, Kitchener, Mrs. Jacob Zeigler of Heidelberg, Mrs. Adam Wettlaufer of Sebastapol and Mrs. William Hass of near Heidelberg, also survive.

The funeral will take place this afternoon (Thursday) from the Letter-Dreisinger Funeral Home, Waterloo, at two o'clock and thence to Heidelberg Lutheran Church for service at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Heidelberg Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. Karl Knauff will officiate.

Linwood Farmer Killed by Lightning

Valentine Foerster, a farmer living near Linwood, was instantly killed by lightning during the thunderstorm on Monday evening. He had gone to the barn shortly before seven o'clock to feed the stock and had just entered the first stall when a bolt of lightning came in a nearby window, killing Mr. Foerster and a brood mare, then jumping two stalls, killed a colt in the fourth stall and left the barn shattering a door. The barn was not otherwise damaged except the destruction of the window panes, through which the lightning entered.

Mrs. Foerster accompanied her husband to the barn, but fearing the severity of the lightning had returned to the house.

The deceased was a well-known resident of the district. He was about 45 years of age and was born near St. Clements, a son of the late Andrew Foerster. Besides his wife he survived by a brother, William, of Waterloo, and a sister, Mrs. Rank, of Kitchener.

F. J. Lewis Meyer, one of the foremost attorneys of South Bend, Ind., is a son of Rev. F. F. Meyer, who was born in Alsace. Lorraine, France (now Germany), and when sixteen years of age emigrated to Canada, and for eleven years there-after was a school teacher in the Dominion, in the following of which calling he won an excellent reputation. About 1870, while living in Canada, he entered the ministry of the Evangelical Association, and about five years later came to the United States and settled in Michigan, and at a still later period in South Bend, in which place he pursued his ministerial duties for three years. He is now located in South Dakota, where he is secretary and treasurer of the Farmers' State Alliance, prior to which he efficiently filled two terms as county superintendent of schools. When in Canada he was married to Mary Foerster, a native of that country and a good old-fashioned family of fifteen children was given to them, of whom F. J. Lewis Meyer is the eldest. All the members of this large family are living: F. J. Lewis; Jacob; George, a foreman for Studebaker Bros.; Sophia, wife of C. M. K. Haeske, superintendent of the wagon department of Studebaker Bros. ; Mary; Lena; Moses; Daniel; Joseph; Bertha; Mattie; John; Fred; Edward and Charles. F. J. Lewis Meyer, together with John A. Berers, principal of the Mishawaka schools, and George A. Powles, now of Chicago, were the founders of the South Bend Normal School, an institution that has become widely and favorably known.

Mr. Meyer was born in Canada in 1860, and in the common schools of Michigan he received a good education. In 1880 he came to South Bend from the Wolverine State, and for a number of years thereafter taught school and, like his father before him, won a good reputation as an educator. From 1886 to 1888 he was principal of the Lafayette School. After choosing law as his life work, he took a course in the Union College of Law at Chicago, and at the time of his graduation he took the first prize for the best thesis on any legal subject He was admitted to the bar in 1890, and his first case involved $3,000 and was before the Michigan Supreme Court. He won the suit against the Hon. A. N. Van Riper as attorney, a man of high standing, who just before was attorney general of Michigan. Mr. Meyer speaks German and consequently has a good practice among the German population of St. Joseph county. Although engaged in the practice of law he still holds a State license. He is attorney for the St. Joseph County Loan & Savings Association, and is also treasurer of the Workingmen's Building & Loan Association. He has always been a stanch Republican, and on that ticket ran for the position of mayor of South Bend in 1890, but was defeated. In 1884 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary L. Rough, of Michigan, by whom he is the father of one son and two daughters: Edwin, Ivy and Louis. He has a very attractive home on the corner of Navarre street and Portage avenue, and he and his intelligent and amiable wife are members in good standing of the German Meth- odist Episcopal Church. Socially he belongs to the I. O. O. F. He is a man who occupies a high position in the estimation of the public and is deservedly classed among the eminent attorneys of the county.

The funeral of William Ziegler of Bridgeport was held Saturday from his late residence to the Bridgeport Lutheran Church and cemetery. Mrs. Mary Veitel

Waterloo friends friends and and relatives learned with regret of the passing of Mrs. Mary Veitel, which followed a stroke which it is believed hasten- ed her death. She was in her 81st year. They observed their golden wedding on May 26, 1935.

Born in Heidelberg, Mrs. Veitel came to Waterloo fifty years ago where she since resided. There survive one son, Norman of Waterloo, two daughters, Mrs. N. H. Letter of Waterloo, and Mrs. Simon Thiel of Kitchener, also two brothers, Henry Ziegler of Waterloo, and Louis Zlegler of Brandon, Manitoba, and three sisters, Mrs. William Schaefer of Heldelberg and Misses Kate and Rose Ziegler of Detroit, Mich. Twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

The funeral services were held from the late residence, 116 King street north on Sunday with Rev. C. S. Roberts, pastor of the St. John's Lutheran Church, presiding. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Jacob Ziegler, a well known resident of Heidelberg, died at his home In that village this morning after a lingering illness. He was in his 75th year. Mr. Ziegler was born in Heidelberg and resided there on a farm all his life.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Harry and Herman of Heidelberg, four daughters, Mrs. Ed. Hartung. Mrs. H. Roeder and Mrs. Wm. Mrs. William Ottman's Mother Was Lifelong Resident of Waterloo County

A life-long resident of Waterloo County passed away on Saturday when Mrs. George Heinz succumbed at her home in Welesley, in her sixty-sixth year. The late Mrs. Heinz was formerly Anna Ziegler, and was born in Heidelberg, where her early life was spent.

She is survived by her husband, two sons, Oliver and Milton, who live near Bamberg, and four daughters, Mrs. Edwin F. Kline of Toronto, Mrs. William Ottman of Elmira, and Mrs. Henry Kelterborn and Mrs. Marley Berst of Wellesley. Five brothers, William of Bridgeport, Jacob of Heidelberg, Henry of Waterloo, John of Chicago and Louis of Brandon, Man., and four sisters, Misses Katie and Rose of Detroit, Mrs. William Fiedel of Waterloo and Mrs. William Schaefer of Heidelberg also survive along with six grandchildren.

Henry A. Ziegler

Another of Waterloo's highly esteemed citizens in the person of Mr. Henry A. Ziegler, 79 Queen St. north, passed away Sunday evening in his 71st year, following a week's illness of pneumonia. The funeral held yesterday afternoon was largely attended. Rev. C. S. Roberts conducted a brief service at the house and preached the sermon at the service held in the St. John's Lutheran church of which deceased was an active member for many years Internment was made at Mount Hope cemetery.

Born in Heidelberg, deceased came to Waterloo 36 years ago to reside. For 30 years has was a valued employee of the Roschman Button Company.

Predeceased by his wife 15 years ago, he is survived by two sons, Harvey and Gordon of Waterloo, also one brother, Louis of Brandon, three sisters, Mrs. W. Schaefer, Heidelberg, and Misses Kate and Rose Ziegler of Detroit and four grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Wednesday from the residence to St. John's Lutheran Church for service with interment at Mount Hope cemetery.

The pallbearers were Messrs. Herb. Schaus, F. D. Rueffer, Clayton Martin, Walter Witthuhn, Carl Zinkann and Fred Walz.

Respected Citizen Passes Away

A large circle of friends will learn with deep regret of the death of Mrs. Henry N. Huehn who passed away on Thursday, May 18th, after a lingering illness at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 3 days.

The deceased lived here most of her lifetime and will be greatly missed by her many friends.

The funeral which was the largest ever held in our village, took place on Sunday afternoon.

She leaves to mourn her sorrowing husband and four sons, Elwin and Herman of Heidelberg, Oscar and Herbert of Conestoga, also 2 brothers and 1 sister survive, Louis Sattler of Kitchener, Henry Sattler and Mrs. G. Weis of Heidelberg. The bereaved family will have the heartfelt sympathy of many friends in the loss of a loving wife and mother.

J. Albert Steiss of 61 Ezra Ave., Waterloo, died Monday at K-W Hospital. He was 93.

The last surviving member of his family, Mrs. Steiss was born Nov. 12, 1876, at Heidelberg, son of the late Adam Steiss and Elizabeth Huehnergard. He moved to Waterloo in 1959.

For many years he was treasurer of Woolwich Township and had been retired for 11 years. He was a member of Emmanuel United Church, Waterloo.

His wife, the former Ada Weber, died in 1963. He was also predeceased by a son, Earl, in 1955 and by three brothers and three sisters. Surviving are two grandchildren.

The body is at the Edward R. Good funeral Home, Waterloo, where the funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 pm. Rev. W. H. H. Stewart of Emmanuel Church will officiate and burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Heidelberg.

The death occurred at Waterloo n Monday morning of Mrs. Clara Elisabeth Hass (nee Steiss) wife of Mr. Herman Hass. She had reached the age of 38 years, 2 months and 7 days. Deceased had been in poor health for the past four years. Mrs. Hass was born in Heidelberg on January 19th, 1879. She was married about 13 years ago and has lived in Waterloo during that time.

The deceased is survived by her mother; one sister, Mrs. H. G. Hahn, of Tavistock, and four brothers, John, of Kitchener; Oscar, of Tavistock; Albert, of Heidelberg; and William, of Toronto. Her father and one sister, Mrs. (Rev.) Zarnke, predeceased her, the former about 12 years ago and the latter about eight years ago.

The funeral was held from the late residence on Thursday afternoon, to St. John's Lutheran Church for service. Interment was made in the Heidelberg Cemetery.

The funeral service was held in Innistall, Alta., Feb. 13 for Harry J. Steiss of Westward Ho, Alta., formerly of Heidelberg, Ont., who died Feb, 10 in hospital at Didsbury. He was 82.

Mr. Stetss was born at Heidelberg, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Steiss. He went to Westward Ho. In 1918 and returned to Heidelberg in 1924. He and his wife operated Heidelberg and Petersburg hotels for several years. They returned to their farm at Westward Ho in 1932.

Surviving are his wife, the former Annie Koch, who is living at the Rosen Haven Hospital, Camrose, Alta,, and two brothers, Ezra of Bamberg and Emmanuel of St. Clements. He was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.

ST. CLEMENTS - Manford A. Steiss of St. Clements died from a heart attack at his home Monday. He was 76. Born near Heidelberg, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Steiss. He was a member of St. Clements RC Church. A veteran of the First World War, he served with the 118th Battalion. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Kieswetter, on May 22, 1961; a son, three brothers and five sisters. Surviving are a foster daughter, Mrs. Haig (Theresa) Douglas of Kitchener; a brother, Ezra, of St. Jacobs; and three foster grandchildren. The body will be at the family residence after 7 p.m. today where the parish rosary will be recited Wednesday at 8: 30 p.m. and prayers said Thursday at 9 a.m. Removal will follow to the church for requiem mass at 9: 30 a.m. Rev. V. J. Pickett will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
