Death of Mr. Isaac Shupe.
The following regarding the death of Mr. Isaac Shupe was accidently omitted last week.
After an illness of several months, Mr. Isaac Shupe passed away on Sunday morning, May 23rd, 1909, at his residence on Simcoe street, in his 74th year. Deceased was born at Waterloo, Ont., and came to Newmarket 40 years ago. From the manufacturer's point of view he was regarded as one of the best selling agents in Canada. Not long after coming to Newmarket he married Miss Anne Thieresa Prest who with three daughters-Mrs. S. A. Proctor, Rossi and Pauline-and three sons-Frank, Claude and Robert, survive. In the early eighties Mr. Shupe, together with his brother-in-law, Mr. Robert D. Prest, went to Moose Jaw, Sask., and opened up the first hotel there known as "The Moose" but owing to the many difficulties in getting supplies into a new unsettled country, they only remained a short time, and after selling out returned to Newmarket. Mr. Shupe then moved with his wife and family to Brandon, Man., where he engaged in the hotel business again for four years and after the rebellion of 1885, settled in Parkdale, but not long afterwards gravitated to the old home-town, Newmarket, where he family have since resided while he continued the agency business all over Ontario and Quebec.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and owing to the very low condition of Mrs. Shupe, was conducted privately by Rev. J. W. Blackler, rector of St. Paul's church. The pall-bearers were the three sons also Messrs. S. A. Proctor, H. V. Denne and C. Lloyd. Those from a distance were Dr. and Mrs. McQueen, Freelton; Mr. Charlie Lloyd, Stratford; Mrs. Thorpe, Philadelphia, Pa.; and the following from Toronto: --Mrs. Ferson, Mrs. E. Plaxton, Mrs. P. E. Durst, Miss Sykes, Mrs. E. Clark, Mr. Nash, Mr. E. A. McKenzie. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Sleigh. The remains were interred in the Newmarket Cemetery.

Age 83 years, 11 months, 28 days Nearly 84, passed away Saturday after a long illness. He lived for many years in Leighton Twp. and was well known here. Some years ago he sold his farm and went to California to be near a son and family - later he sold out there and came back here and purchased the M.E. Thompson property where the wife passed away about a year ago. He had been in failing health since and was given the best of care by his daughter, Mrs. Perrault, and his son and family of Chicago, a part of whom moved here and was with him constantly. He was fortunate in one thing, that he had no pain all during his illness. The funeral will be a t 2 PM at the late home. The relatives have the sympathy of their friends in the passing of a real man.

- Education: Galt (Cambridge), Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; Commercial College
- Eby ID Number: Waterloo-55608
Notes:
James L. Keachie is secretary and general manager of the Dexter Creamery -- the most important industry of the town. He was born in Sheffield, Wentworth county, Ontario, Canada, on January 23, 1876, a son of John and Sarah (Kirkpatrick) Keachie. The father, also a native of Sheffield, was born August 14, 1838, while the grandfather, James Bailey Keachie, was born in New York, his parents having emigrated from Scotland. They remained in New York for only a short period, however, crossing the border into Canada and taking up their abode in Ontario. The members of the Keachie family for several generations back had largely been tillers of the soil, and John Keachie, the father of our subject, likewise followed the same pursuit. For the past eight years, however, he has been living a retired life in the town of Galt, Wentworth county.
His wife was also born in Sheffield Ontario, the date of her birth being March 8, 1845, while her parents were respectively of Scotch and German ancestry. She passed away on July 12, 1894, and her death was deeply regretted by a large circle of friends as well as by her immediate family. Mr. and Mrs. Keachie were the parents of six children, as follows: John B., who resides in Redwood Falls, Minnesota; Mary, the wife of Osborn Howell, of St. George, Ontario, Canada; Anna, who married Dr. James McQueen, living in Freelton, Ontario; James L., of this review; Gertrude, the wife of C. E. Benkley, of New Liskeard, Ontario; and Nellie, the wife of C. E. Cornell, residing in Truman, Minnesota.
James L. Keachie was reared on the home farm and acquired his education in the public schools of Sheffield and the Commercial College at Galt, Ontario. In 1900 he came to the United States, joining a brother in Dexter, Iowa, who had charge of the creamery here and whose employ he entered. The following winter he took a special course in butter-making at the Iowa State Dairy School at Ames, and following its completion he was offered and accepted the management of the creamery at Blairstown, Benton county, Iowa. In the spring of 1902, however, he resigned from this institution, and applied for the position of secretary and general manager of the Dexter Creamery, these offices being left vacant by the resignation of his brother. On the 1st of March, 1902, James L. Keachie assumed the duties of his present position, the plant under his management having been unusually successful owing to the executive ability and excellent business training of our subject. The business of the creamery has increased with remarkable rapidity, and during the past year the output amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand pounds of butter. The entire product of this important industrial plant is shipped to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Dexter Creamery is the most important enterprise of the town and also one of the most successful creameries in this section of Iowa, being therefore a prominent factor in the material prosperity of the county.
On the 25th of December, 1902, Mr. Keachie was joined in wedlock to Miss Ada Gilmore, a native of Valens, Ontario, Canada, and a daughter of William and Eliza (Cudney) Gilmore, both of whom are still living and reside on their farm in Wentworth county, Ontario.
In his political views Mr. Keachie is a republican and fraternally is connected with Dexter lodge, No. 215, I. O. O. F. He is also a member of the United Presbyterian church, while his wife is connected with the Methodist Episcopal denomination. In the conduct of his business Mr. Keachie has always employed methods which would bear the closest investigation and scrutiny and which have been based upon the strictest principles of business integrity. He well deserves his position as one of the representative citizens of the county, and all with whom he comes in contact accord him the highest respect and esteem.
