    Demolition of downtown Kitchener building reveals former Red and White grocery store

    KITCHENER - The pile of bricks at King and Cedar streets is all that remains of single-storey commercial building with a long history in the downtown's east end.

    Workers will demolish everything but the foundation because the Toronto-based owner of the property wants to rebuild on the site, said Mike Seiling, the head of the city's building department.

    In 2012, St. Clair Appliance closed up shop and sold the building. The appliance business had been operating out of that building since about 1967.

    Before that the building was the home for Daly's Grocery. Leo Daly opened the store in 1935 as a Red and White, a chain backed by National Grocers. Demolition workers exposed the red and white checkerboard tiles that decorated the end of the building that fronted on King Street East, and ran along part of the Cedar Street side as well....

    KRAMER, Elaine Florence Elaine Kramer (nee Daly) (1926-2014) passed away peacefully at Lisaard House on September 27, 2014, at the age of 87. Beloved wife of 59 years to George. Loving mother of Kathy (Bob) Speziale of Hamilton; Rosemary (Gary) Hentges of Kitchener; Gary (Cindy) of Sarnia; and Stephen (Michele) of Waterloo. She is also survived by her five grandsons: Joel and friend Alissa, Marc, Todd, Christopher and John Paul, as well as her step-grand-daughters, Tonia and Leanne Krzewski, and step-great-grand-daughter, Kallee. She will be fondly remembered by her brother Ross (Mary) Daly of Watford; her sister Jean Schmalz of Kitchener and her many dear nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents, J. Leo and Florence (Roth) Daly, her brother Ken and his wife Joyce Daly, and her brother-in-law Tom Schmalz. She will also be remembered by the Kramer family: Anna Marie Kramer (deceased), Rev. Alec Kramer (deceased), Doris Opperman (Harry, deceased), Marjorie Lecky (Glenn, deceased) and Ena Kramer (Ray, deceased). Elaine's greatest joys were her relationships with her family and friends both at home and at the cottage. Her lasting and dear friendships over the years are a testament to her caring and outgoing nature and greatly enriched her life. She will be remembered for her support, given gladly and sincerely, to her sister Jean and family (who referred to Elaine affectionately as "Ma") and to her dear Aunt Lottie. After retiring as secretary at St. Theresa's Catholic School in 1989, Elaine became a proud member of the Probus Club. She and George enjoyed extensive travel over their years together. Elaine's family will receive relatives and friends at the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749- 8467 on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with parish prayers at 8: 45 p.m. Prayers will also be offered at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 10: 20 a.m. followed by a procession to St. Anne's RC Church, 268 East Ave., Kitchener for a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., followed immediately by a reception at the church. Cremation will take place with a private interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Waterloo to be held at a later date. The family would like to thank so many friends and family who took time to call and who offered their prayers and support during Mom's illness.     DALY, John Kenneth (Ken) - Passed away, at Lakeridge Health, Oshawa on Friday, January 16, 2009, in his 80th year, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Beloved husband of 53 years to Joyce. Loving father of Cherie Daly (Aubrey Basdeo) of Toronto and Scott Daly of Oshawa. He will be fondly remembered by his three grandsons Kyle, Dylan and Justin Basdeo. Dear brother of Ross (Mary) Daly of Watford, Elaine (George) Kramer and Jean (Thomas) Schmalz of Kitchener; brother-in-law of Maxine (Paul) Kastner of Wiarton and Shirley Witt of Waterloo. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. Predeceased by his parents Leo and Florence (nee Roth) Daly. He was an honourary life member of Kitchener Knights of Columbus, council 1504 (3rd degree) for 57 years, Honourary Kinsmen, Past President of Oshawa Kinsmen K-40 Club and volunteer of St. Vincent's Kitchen. Visitation will be held at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, 690 King St. East, Oshawa on Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 12: 00 noon. Cremation. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Oshawa Funeral Home , 847 King St. West, 905-721-1234. As expressions of sympathy donations to St. Gertrude's Building Fund or Durham Region Cancer Centre would be appreciated.
