    Rsrch. Note:
John Rogers2 Nesbitt (James1) was born May 9, 1873, and died November 26, 1948 in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, Canada. He married Ida Maude Brydon April 26, 1904, daughter of William Brydon and Blandina Eby. She was born about 1878, and died 1951. JR attended a dairy course in Belleville, Ontario, Canada in the early 1890's. He came to Manitoba, Canada in 1896 to work on a farm at Pilot Mound. Later in the year, he came to Shoal Lake. In the winter months he bought grain, and in the summer months he worked in the creamery. It is interesting to note that this creamery was established in 1889 and one of the first creameries in the province. JR maintained his relationship with the creamery until his death. In the winter of 1897 he attended a dairy school in Winnipeg (at that time offered in the Henderson Block on the southwest corner of Market Square). During the winter of 1901, he taught milk testing at this school. In 1904, Smellie Bros purchased the creamery. Thus began a relationship between JR Nesbitt and the Smellie family that was to continue for almost fifty years. John Nesbitt gradually bought shares in the creamery operation, and the company expanded to Russell, Roblin, McNutt and Rossburn. Pigs were a natural outlet for the waste products of the dairy, and the company early entered into hog production. A farrowing barn was built in the early 1940's which would do justice to any hog operation of today. In 1924, James Martin joined JR Nesbitt, and together they established an enviable reputation as breeders of Holstein cattle. As an indication of the reputation he had established in the Dairy Industry, in 1920, he was made a member of a commission to establish the rules and regulations for the grading of cream in the prairie provinces. He served on a great many committees and was noted for his speeches. No one ever went to sleep during his speeches - they were too short. In 1930, HR was awarded an Honorary Diploma from the University of Manitoba. The citation read "He has been a pioneer in dairying in Manitoba and is noted as an exponent of improved methods of buttermaking, a most successful exhibitor of butter and a breeder of dairy cattle." JR Nesbitt was also active in community affairs. He served on the village council for years. He was chairman of the hospital board from 1929-1946. He was very fond of gardening, and the creamery was surrounded by beautiful beds of flowers. In addition, he kept a flock of approximately fifty geese. Their wings were clipped in the fall so that they could not migrate (thus enabling them to avoid the shots of wily hunters). In the spring, they were allowed to fly freely, and they nested in the lake and also in a number of sloughs in the surrounding area. They were a beautiful site to behold when the whole flock came in to land on the lake. He also raised ring necked pheasants which were released in the general area. Unfortunately, the ravages of winter and shots of the hunters were too much and few birds survived for any length of time. In 1991 he was inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame. Funeral service was held at Westminister United Church, Shoal Lake with burial in the Shoal Lake Cemetery. Notes for Ida Maude Brydon: Maude was active in the United Church Women's organization. She was very fond of gardening (vegetables and flowers) and did a great deal of knitting and quilting.

    Notes:

In the summer of 1882, grandfather Charles Findlay (who was a councillor for the County of Shoal Lake with head office at Birtle), while helping some of the newer immigrants to locate their homesteads, decided that the N 1/2 of Sec. 20, Twp 17 Range 24 was not a bad piece of land. As a result he acquired it as his second homestead.

In 1905 father, Jacob B. Findlay (better known as Jabe or J.B.) married Margaret Dunseith and moved into their new house on this piece of land. They had four children: Dad and Mother (Jabe and Maggie) lived on this farm until Mother?s death in 1941. In 1942, when Lloyd decided to enlist, Irene and I (Cliff) moved back to the farm to be with Dad.
