    Sister Rosalind Koebel, SSND
    (née Virginia Koebel)

    First Profession 1943
    Motherhouse
    Waterdown, Ontario, Canada

Sister Rosalind Koebel died of cancer on August 9, 2015 at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario. She was of 92 and in her 72nd year as a School Sister of Notre Dame.

Virginia was born in St. Clements, Ontario on February 23, 1923, the fifth child of Robert and Rose (Helm) Koebel. Although she enjoyed playing with her brothers, Virginia happily welcomed a baby sister when she was 11 years old. From early childhood, Virginia wanted to become a "sister" teacher. Often her brothers played school with her, at times reluctantly.

At the age of 15, having completed Grade 10 at St. Clements School, Ontario, Virginia entered the candidature in Waterdown, Ontario and on July 29, 1942 she became Novice Mary Rosalind. She was delighted to have St. Rose of Lima as her patron saint. As a child she tried to emulate the virtues of St. Rose and would have liked to ask her father to build a hut in the family garden so she could imitate St. Rose. She professed her vows in 1943.

After attending Hamilton Teachers' College, Sister Rosalind began her teaching career in 1944 at schools in Hamilton, Ontario, Holy Family and St. Emeric. She then moved to Kitchener, Ontario where she taught at St. John, St. Anne and St. Theresa Schools. She took educational courses during the summer months. Although Sister Rosalind was an excellent teacher in the primary grades, she had to discontinue as a classroom teacher in 1953 due to ill health.

However, she used her skills as an educator by tutoring children in St. Agatha, Welland, St.Catharines, Mildmay, Waterdown, Toronto and Formosa. She, also, worked as part time librarian. When she was well enough she filled in as a part-time supply teacher.

An added suffering was her loss of hearing. Again, she did not allow this impediment to interfere with her daily activities which included managing the audio resources in the Motherhouse library for a number of years.

Sister Rosalind always carried a pad of paper and pen with her, so that she could communicate by having notes written to her. In spite of her hearing impairment she maintained an interest in community and world events. Sister Rosalind seemed to know when a piece of news would be of interest to an individual. Pertinent newspaper clippings, accompanied with a note, would appear on one's desk.

In spite of her years of illness, Sister Rosalind did not complain. With deep faith she trusted the words of Christ, "Come to me ...you who are burdened; I will refresh you." She greeted each person with cheerfulness and a joyful spirit. She readily expressed gratitude for the smallest act of kindness.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Pablito Labado, chaplain at Notre Dame Convent. Sister Rosalind is survived by her sister, Theresa Winklemaier and nieces and nephews.

(School Sisters of Notre Dame, Atlantic-Midwest Province)

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord!
