It is with deep sorrow that we have to report the death of Mr. Jacob Wagler, who died on Tuesday, the 5^th inst. at 5 o'clock in the morning. The funeral took place on Thursday morning at 9, and was well attended. Mr. Wagler was the first Amish settler in this community and was a man highly respected by all who came in contact with him. Many a weary traveller found shelter under his roof and he always was kind to them. No doubt he will be much missed. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved family in this their sad affliction.

DEATH OF BISHOP WAGLER.

Mr. Jacob Wagler, Bishop of the Amish Mennonite church, died at his home on the fifth line on Tuesday morning. He had been ill but a few days and was in Wellesley village within a week or so. He was in his 62nd year and was apparently a healthy man until attacked by pneumonia a few days ago. He has lived in this section a very long time and enjoyed the highest esteem of all with whom he came in contact. For nearly 20 years he has been a bishop in his church and was a powerful speaker. His remains are to be interred at 9 o'clock this (Thursday morning.)

Wellesley - Michael Wagler, 97, of Wellesley died Saturday at his home.

Born in Wellesley Township, Dec. 30, 1862, he farmed in the township until retiring in 1934. He was a son of the late Jacob Wagler and Magdalena Gordner.

He was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite church.

His wife, the former Magdalena Schultz, died in 1934.

Survivors include one son, John Wellesley, five daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Barbara) Lichty of Wellesley, Mrs. Ezra (Elizabeth) Leis and Mrs. Jacob Z. (Nancy) Lichty of Wellesley, Mrs. David (Magdalena) Gascho and Mrs. Joseph (Catherine) Lichty of Millbank; one brother, David of Wellesley Township; 28 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The body is at his home in Wellesley where the funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Memorial service will be held in the church at 2:15 p.m. Bishop Samuel Roth will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

July 9. Michael Wagler, 98, was born on a farm (owned in 1960 by David Wagler) on the fifth line of Wellesley Township. When the Wagler family of the Amish-Mennonite faith came to Canada from Alsace, they brought Bibles which had been printed in their mother tongue, German, at the time of Dr. Martin Luther. The late Mr. Michael Wagler and his brother David, became the possessors of the Bibles. One, owned by the late Michael Wagler, contained an early exposition written by Martin Luther. Each time one visited the late Mr. Wagler and enjoyed seeing his treasured volume under his direction, it was the owner's graciousness and humility which gave the visit its greatest value.C. Noah Wagler

Ill for the past year, Noah Wagler, age 61, died at his home near Wellesley. He was born in the Fifth line of Wellesley Township. He attended Lichti's Amish-Mennonite Church, Third line of Wellesley.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, and three daughters, namely, Samuel, Fifth line, Wellesley; Christian of Wilmot Township; Allan, Lydia, Clara, at home, and Mrs. Ezra Erb, Millbank; also four brothers and two sisters, Michael, Wellesley; David, Fifth line of Wellesley; Daniel, North Easthope, and John, Toronto; Mrs. John R. Gerber, Wellesley; Mrs. Joseph R. Gerber, Fifth line of Wellesley; also seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at 9.30 a.m., from the residence to Lichti Amish-Mennonite Church, Third Line of Wellesley, for public service. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Jacob Lichti was in charge.

She was born in Wellesley Township, June 25, 1888, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wagler. She was a member of the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church, Wellesley.

She was married to Daniel Lichty, Nov. 23, 1911.

Surviving are one son, Harvey Carrick, Lucknow; one daughter, Mrs. Ezra (Katie) Jantzi, RR 2, Wellesley; one brother John Wagler, RR 1, Wellesley; four sisters, Mrs. Ezra (Elizabeth) Leis, and Mrs. Jacob (Nancy) Lichty, both of Wellesley, Mrs. Joseph (Catherine) Lichty and Mrs. David (Madeline) Gascho, both of Millbank; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Alvin, and also by three brothers, and two sisters.

Service was conducted Jan. 19 in Wellesley. A memorial service was held at the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Chruch. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery. Bishop Samuel Roth officiated.

MILLBANK-Mrs. Joseph Lichty of Millbank died Sunday at Listowel Hospital. She was 78.

The former Catherine Wagler, she was born in Wellesley Township, Jan. 18, 1891, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wagler. She was a member of Riverdale Mennonite Church and of the church sewing circle.

Mrs. Lichty was predeceased by her husband in January, 1963, by two sisters and three brothers.

Surviving are two sons, David and Samuel of Millbank; two daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Nancy) Leis and Mrs. Aaron (Emma) Jantzi, both of RR 1, Millbank; one brother, John of Wellesley; three sisters, Mrs. Ezra (Elizabeth) Leis and Mrs. Jacob Z. (Nancy) Lichty, both of Wellesley and Mrs. David (Madeline) Gascho of Millbank, 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The body will be at the Futher Funeral Home until noon, Wednesday, when removal will be made to Riverdale Mennonite Church for service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Menno Zehr and Rev. David Jantzi officiating. Burial will be in Riverdale Mennonite cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Michael Wagler and the late Mattie Schultz; a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church where she was active in the WMSC for many years.

Beloved mother of Mahlon of Tavistock, Harold of Wellesley, Herbert of Kitchener; dear sister of John W. Wagle of RR 1, Wellesley and Nancy (Mrs. John Nafziger) of Wellesley; sister-in-law of David Gascho of Millbank; lovingly remembered by her 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ezra E. Leis, April 20, 1966 and also by three brothers and five sisters.

MRS. DAVID GASCHO

Mrs. David Gascho, 69, of Millbank, died Sunday, June 11 at the Listowel Memorial Hospital.

The former Magdalena Wagler, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wagler and was born in Millbank.

She was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church Wellesley.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Gerald of Millbank, Glenn of Wellesley; a daughter, Mrs. Norman Gerber of Millbank; a brother, John of Wellesley; sisters, Mrs. Ezra (Elizabeth) Leis and Mrs. Jacob (Nancy) Lichty, both of Wellesley, 10 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters. The body rested at the family residence in Millbank until noon Tuesday when removal was made to the Maple View Mennonite Church for a service at 2: 30 p.m. Rev. Alvin Leis officiated. Burial was in church cemetery.

He was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church. Surviving are his father, John Jantzi, and his stepmother. His mother, the former Mattie Wagler, died in 1907. Also surviving are his wife, the former Katie Albrecht; one son, Alvin, Wellesley; one daughter, Susanna, at home; three brothers, Noah, of Bamberg, John and David of Wilmot Township; six sisters, Mrs. Christian (Barbara) Albrecht, of Vero Beach, Florida, Mrs. Jacob (Lydia) Albrecht, of Crosshill, Mrs. David (Katie) Nafziger, of R.R. 2, Milverton, Mrs. David (Mattie) Zehr of Crosshill, Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Roes and Mrs. Enoch (Sara) Horst, of Millbank. Five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at his residence on Saturday morning followed by church service at 10 o'clock at the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Mose Nafziger officiated at the church and Rev. Samuel Roth, Wellesley, officiated at the house. The pallbearers were Ervin Nafziger, Clarence Miller Emanuel Albrecht, Aaron Jantzi, William Albrecht and David Jantzi. The funeral, which was one of the largest in the district, was attended with relatives and friends from Vero, Florida; Bay Port, Mich.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Kitchener, Baden, New Hamburg, Crosshill, Milverton and the surround district.

Surviving are his wife, the former Annie Gerber, whom he married in Wellesley Township March 3, 1927; three daughters, Erma, Mrs. Ernest (Marion) Roth and Mrs. Emmanuel (Emma) Lichty, all of RR 1, Wellesley; two brothers, Noah of Wellesley and John of Crosshill; five sisters, Mrs. Christian (Barbara) Albrecht of Vero Beach, Fla., Mrs. Jacob (Lydia) Albrecht of RR 1, Millbank, Mrs. David (Mattie) Zehr of Crosshill, Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Rose of Millbank, and Mrs. Enoch (Sarah) Horst of Linwood; four grandchildren.

The body will be at the family home after Wednesday noon, where a family service will be conducted Friday at 1: 30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2: 30 p.m. at Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church. Bishop Samuel Roth will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 1982 at Peoples Care Centre, Tavistock, Lydia Erb, of 10 David St,, Wellesley. Mrs. Erb was born in Wellesley township 77 years ago. She was the daughter of the late David L. Wagler and the late Catherine Erb; Mrs. Erb was a lifelong member of the Mapleview Mennonite Church. Beloved mother of Vernon of New Hamburg, Edmund of RR 2, Wellesley, Vera (Mrs. Frederick Koehler) of Kitchener, Erma (Mrs. Craig Bisset) of Kitchener; sister of Emma (Mrs. Aaron Lichti) of Wellesley, Sarah (Mrs. Amos Ropp) of Wellesley, Lavina (Mrs. Mose Lichti) of Millbank, Katie Wagler of Millbank. Also survived by 11 grandchildren. Predeceased by three brothers and one sister. Visitation at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, Wellesley, after 7 p.m. this evening, until noon Saturday, March 13, when removal will be made to Mapleview Mennonite Church for service at 2 p.m. Rev. Alvin Leis and Rev. Jacob Roes will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Western Ontario Mennonite Mission Board or to the Mennonite Central Committee.

She was the mother of Daniel Ropp, of Wellesley, Norman Ropp of Komoka, Tillie (Mrs. Alvin Kennell), of RR3 Wellesley, Laura (Mrs. Leo Noll), of New Hamburg, Eva (Mrs. Jerome Arnold), of Kitchener, and Katie (Mrs. Jack Kuepfer), of RR2 Milverton; sister of Emma (Mrs. Aaron Lichti), of Wellesley, Lavina (Mrs. Mose Lichti), and Katie Wagler, both of Millbank; also survived by ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; predeceased by her husband, Amos Ropp, her parents, David Wagler and Catherine Erb, three brothers and two sisters.

Beloved husband of Leah (Lebold) of Brunner Nursing Home. Dear brother of Christ Wagler of Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Allan and his wife Emma Wagler of Millbank, Matilda (Mrs. Ezra Erb) of Hillside Nursing Home, Sebringville and Lydia and her husband Lloyd Zehr of RR 1 Millbank.

He was predeceased by two sons, John and Irvin and also by one daughter in infancy; by one sister, Clara Wagler; a sister-in-law, Katie Wagler and a brother-in-law, Ezra Erb.

Visitation at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, 40 Henry St., Wellesley, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A family service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 22 at 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service at Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. John Zehr and Mahlon Gerber will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

LICHTY, David W.

David W. Lichty, 46, of Millbank, died Thursday, January 1, at Listowel Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born Oct. 25, 1923 in Mornington Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lichty.

He was a member of Riverdale Mennonite Church, and had operated a chicken hatchery in Millbank until ill health forced his retirement five years ago.

Surviving besides his wife, the former Dorothy Gascho, are one son, Gerald of Millbank; a brother, Samuel, also of Millbank; and two sisters, Mrs. Daniel (Nancy) Leis, and Mrs. Aaron (Emma) Jantzi, both of R.R. 1, Millbank.

The body rested at the Futher Brothers funeral Home, Wellesley, until noon on Sunday when removal was made to Riverdale Mennonite Church for the funeral service at 3 p.m., with Rev. Menno Zehr and Rev. David Jantzi officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Elizabeth TRUSSLER Obituary

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) Trussler passed away peacefully early Sunday morning on January 29, 2023, at University Gates LTC in Waterloo. Betty was born in Milverton, Ontario on November 22, 1923. The third child of Noah and Hilda Wagler, Betty along with her brothers, James and Robert and sister, June spent many enjoyable summers with their Amish relatives in Wellesley. As a young woman, Betty worked as a stenographer for Canada Cabinets. In 1947, she married her husband, Doug and raised their family in Waterloo. After the children grew up, she worked in food services at the University of Waterloo until her retirement in 1988. Betty and Doug celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2022. Betty lived her life in humble service to God, her family, to nature and the needs and causes of others. She was a kind woman who was generous with her time and her financial support of those that needed help. She loved to listen to music, and we cherish that she sang lullabies to all our babies. Her family was spoiled with her delicious meals that often-included new recipes she found to try and delicious desserts. She enjoyed reading books including her treasured bible and took a keen interest in lively conversations with family. Left to cherish her memory and hold her in their hearts are her children, June Sage, Scott (Karen), Dianne (Brent Heard), grandchildren, Aaron deBoer (Raquel), Adam deBoer, Allison Sage (Armando), Lia Privat (Trent), Joel (Karen) and Sam (Brittany), and great grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, Claire, Emma, Hayden, and Ivy. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Doug, her parents, Noah and Hilda Wagler, brothers, James and Robert and her sister, June Weseloh. Our appreciation goes to the caring staff of University Gates - Pollock unit and at Trinity Village Retirement Studios. Mahlon A. Leis

LEIS, Mahlon A. - Mahlon Arthur Leis, 90, of Tavistock, passed away in the Maples Home for Seniors, Tavistock on Friday, February 15, 2013. He was born at Wellesley on December 13, 1922 a son of the late Ezra E. and Elizabeth (Wagler) Leis. Mahlon graduated from the Ontario Dairy College at Guelph in 1944 and following graduation was a Cheese Maker. He later owned and operated Tavistock Dairy for 25 years and then was an employee of Maple Lane Dairy. He was a faithful member of Tavistock Mennonite Church serving as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Trustee, Elder and MYF Sponsor. Along with Marie and other friends he was co-founder of Hidden Acres Mennonite Camp. Mahlon was a former member of the Tavistock Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief as well as Fire Chief of the Township of East Zorra. He was a faithful member of the Tavistock Men's Club where he was Past President and had served as Chairman of the Annual Sauerkraut Supper for many years. After his retirement from Maple Lane Dairy he was a high school bus driver for 10 years. LEIS, Harold A. \endash It is with heartfelt sorrow that the Leis family announces the sudden passing of their beloved HAL on Monday, March 22, 2010 while curling. Harold Alvin Leis was born in Wellesley 85 yrs ago and was the son of the late Ezra Leis and Elizabeth Wagler. Harold owned Leis Feed and Supply until he retired in 1989 and was a volunteer fireman for 45 yrs, 12 as fire chief. He was a man who lived out his faith in the community and his church. He was a founder and member of Wellesley Mennonite Church, Hidden Acres Mennonite Camp and Pond View Retirement Community. To the day of his death he was active in golf, curling and horseshoes and prior to retirement, hockey, soft ball, slow pitch and tennis. He loved to challenge his children and grandchildren in these activities as well as card games where he rarely lost. Beloved husband of Ruth (Steinmann) for 62 years. Loving father of Gary Leis (Brenda) of Wellesley, Ron Wasylycia-Leis (Judy) of Winnipeg, Judy Johnson of Saskatoon, Sandy Poole (George) of Wellesley, former son-in-law Tom Johnson and predeceased by infant son Larry Michael. Ever remembered by his 21 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. LEIS, Herbert "Herb" - At St. Mary's General Hospital, in Kitchener. after a very brief illness, on Monday. Dec. 29, 1997, age 70 years, of Kitchener.

Beloved husband of Geri; dear father of Terry and his wife Jane of Kitchener and Patti of Waterloo. He is lovingly remembered by three grandchildren, Cory, Colin and Krista. Brother of Mahlon Leis and his wife Marie of Tavistock and Harold Leis and his wife Ruth of Wellesley. Herb is also remembered by his brothers and sisters-in-law In the Stumpf family and all of his nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Wagler and Ezra Leis.

Herb was a faithful and active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Kitchener, He was retired from Schneiders where he worked for over 40 years. After retiring from Schneiders, he was employed by the Waterloo County Board of Education as a school bus driver. Herb was active in many sports and was a past member of the Schneider Male Chorus. Herb's family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home. 171 King Street South in Waterloo from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. 317 Franklin Street North in Kitchener on Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. James Bindernaget officiating. Dan was born on December 23, 1923 in Crosshill, Ontario to the late Emma (Brenneman) and Amos Wagler.

He spent his early working days building what would become the Trans Canada highway and regaled his family for years with 'we built that bridge'. He eventually moved to Stratford, Ontario where he worked for Gaffney Construction for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. Dan was a member of the Worldwide Church of God and enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble and Solo, gardening, telling a good story, listening to music and watching the Habs dominate the Leafs. Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. Ruby will always be remembered for baking pies, donuts, coffee cakes and hosting large dinners with family and friends. She had adored her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed spending time at the cottage, fishing and playing board games, especially Aggravation. She was a member of Crosshill Mennonite Church and Women's Sewing Circle. She had a love for quilting and quilted one for each of her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by many. Ruth cherished her grandchildren, her flowers and was an avid quilter.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Wellesley Township, August 21, 1937, the deceased is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel N Jantzi R.R. 1, Millbank.

Surviving besides his parents is his wife, the former Jean Jantzi, whom he married in St. Agatha, Sept. 2, 1961; one son, Robert, and three daughters, Kristine, Brenda and Mary Jane, all of home; three sisters, Mrs. Lorne (Mary) Steckley, Atwood; Mrs. Mervin (Norma) Kuepfer, Newton; and Laurene Jantzi, R.R. 1, Millbank.

Passed away, peacefully, with family at her side, at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, on Monday, May 30, 2016, at the age of 83. Vera was born in Wellesley Township on June 25, 1932, a daughter of the late Samuel and Lydia (Wagler) Erb. She was a member of Kitchener Baptist Church. Loving mother of Fred Koehler and his wife Brenda of Shakespeare, Annette Riopelle and her husband Cliff of Ottawa, and grandmother of Katherine, Nick, Jack, and Will. Vernon Erb hands over the president's mantle to son Wendell


NEW HAMBURG - When he started out with one truck, 52 years ago, Vernon Erb dreamed that one day he might have a small, modest fleet. Maybe five or six trucks.

Today, the Erb name crosses an entire continent. It is on hundreds of trucks and refrigerated trailers hauling food and goods to grocery stories and retailers throughout North America.

Honest, hard work and concern for customers and employees built the business, says Vernon's eldest son Wendell, who was recently named president of the Erb Group of Companies after Vernon relinquished the title.

Vernon, now 75, has been winding down his involvement in the day-to-day operations of the Erb Group since 1999, when Wendell became general manager. Handing over the presidential title now marks a more "official" retirement, although Vernon is still chair of the board for Erb Enterprises.

But retirement doesn't really mean retirement for Vernon. "He bought a farm and he is actually farming 220 acres now," Wendell says. "He still comes into the garage, but mostly to borrow tools or a mechanic."

Decency, honest hard work and caring were Vernon's trademarks. "My father knew probably everything about every customer, every employee," Wendell says. "He returned every phone call and lived and breathed the company."

The company now employs about 1,300 people, has 850 delivery trucks and power units that pull trailers, as well as 1,100 trailers and 10 refrigeration facilities between Winnipeg and Montreal.

Vernon took a huge risk but made the right move when he competed against bigger players to get the unrestricted licence he needed in 1970 to be able to carry frozen foods up and down the highways.

The deregulation of the trucking industry, starting in 1980 in the United States, further fuelled the growth of the business, Wendell says. "That allowed us to get the operating authority to truck anywhere in the United States."

Trucking is now a high-tech business, he says. "It is amazing, the information that goes back and forth via satellite."

There are many challenges ahead in the transportation industry, including trying to get reliable equipment that meets the emission standards of today, as well as trying to find enough drivers to replace the ones that are retiring.

"Our driving workforce in general is aging and we are not seeing the people come into the industry as fast as they are retiring," he adds.

But Wendell says the Erb Group has been lucky to have great employees who stayed with the company over the years.

"The loyalty of our drivers and all of our employees is something that we have been blessed with." But he says the business' success is ultimately driven by taking care of customers. That was the main lesson his father passed down.

"What he did was good old fashioned hard work and he took care of the customers. He never failed to remind us that we have to take care of them, and that was our recipe for success."
