Notes:

Thomas Hilliard was born in Northern Ireland and came to Canada in 1847. He became a teacher, a newspaperman and published the Waterloo Chronicle. He was the Waterloo School Inspector for twenty-five years.

Hilliard founded the Dominion Life and raised the $250,000.00 required to start the stock company, and sold the first 520 policies. He was President of the company from 1905 to 1929. During his long career he served the company with great distinction. His unshakable belief in the need for insurance and its benefits to families in need drove him on. He was President of the Canadian Life Insurance Officers Association.

Hilliard served St. James's Methodist Church in Waterloo (now First United), was recording steward for fifty years, attended the General Conference of the Methodist church and the Supreme Council of the United Church.

Historic Building:
The Hilliard House was built in 1880 for Thomas Hilliard, publisher and editor of the Waterloo Chronicle.
The two-storey yellow brick home is an attractive interpretation of the Victorian style. The hip roof, heavy ornamental brackets under the eaves, stained glass windows, projecting bays and porches are all features which distinguish the architectural style from its plain Georgian predecessors.
Thomas Hilliard is also remembered for his association with the Dominion Life Assurance Company, the Waterloo Horticultural Society, the Board of Education and many years of dedicated church service in the Methodist Church (now First United Church) which earned him great respect among his peers.
All facades are recognized for its historical and architectural significance for this designation.<sup>1a

HILLIARD, WILLIAM LOUIS. A son of Thomas and Catherine Hilliard, he was born in Glen Allan on January 18, 1868. He was educated in the Waterloo schools, and graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1891. After postgraduate studies in New York, he began to practice in Morriston. He moved to Waterloo where he practised from 1897 until his retirement in 1948. In addition to his extensive practice, he became involved in municipal affairs.

From 1906 to 1916 he served on the sewer commission, and on the water and light commission. In 1916 he was elected mayor by acclamation, and again in 1917. He was chairman of the planning commission until 1933, when he returned to council as alderman. He held the post of Medical Officer of Health, and acted in this office during the second world war.

He was a past president of the North Waterloo Liberal Association, and a member of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. He was presented with the first honorary life membership of this body in 1964.

His activities in the insurance field included being Medical Director of the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Canada from its inception until he retired in 1951. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dominion Life Assurance Company for 45 years, and likewise with the Waterloo Trust and Savings Company.

He took an active part in church affairs, and Hilliard Hall at Waterloo's First United Church was named for his family.

Maintaining physicial fitness was part of his life, and in addition to lawn bowling and later, walking, he was a supporter of the Y. M. C. A. He not only served as president and director, but also continued to attend weekly workouts until the age of 90. He was a member of its volley ball team while he was in his 80's. He regarded fitness as one reason for his longevity.

He was small in stature, but not in personality or achievements.

He died on August 14, 1966, at 98 years of age, and was survived by a son and three daughters.

Dr. Hilliard, 98, Dies in Waterloo

Dr. William L. Hilliard, 98, former Waterloo mayor and a prominent example of the physical fitness he preached, died Sunday at his home, 69 Bridgeport Rd., after an illness of several months.

He practised medicine in Waterloo from 1897 until his retirement in 1948 at the age of 80, and was a former medical officer of health for Waterloo.

He was medical director of the Equitable Life Insurance Co. of Canada from its founding in 1920 until his retirement.

He was a director of the Dominion Life Assurance Co. which was founded by his father, and of the Waterloo Trust and Savings Co.

Dr. Hilliard was elected Waterloo mayor in 1916 and 1917, after serving on the sewer commission and the water and light commission from 1906 to 1916. He was chairman of the town planning commission for nine years until he resigned to return to council as an alderman in 1933.

YMCA DIRECTOR

He served as president and a director of the Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA for many years, and was still playing volleyball at weekly Y workouts until he was 90. He was considered the oldest active Y member in Canada during his 80's when he held a regular position on its volleyball team.

Dr. Hilliard was also an ardent lawn bowler until the past few years, and was a familiar sight taking his daily 10-block walks. He attributed his fitness to abstinence from tobacco and alcohol, moderate eating, and physical exercise.

He was a past president of the Waterloo North Liberal Association and a life member of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce.

A native of Glen Allan, he received his early education in Waterloo, and was graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1890. After taking further training at New York, he practised at Morriston before returning to Waterloo in 1897.

He was a son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Sauder) Hilliard, and attributed some of his longevity to inheritance. His father died at 96.

His wife, the former Ida Clemens, died in 1942.

ACTIVE IN CHURCH

Dr. Hilliard was a former elder, trustee, recording secretary and Sunday school superintendent at First United Church, Wa terloo, its addition, Hilliard Hall was named after his family.

Surviving are one son, Graham, in India; three daughters, Mrs. W. T. (Rose) Hutcheson, Woodstock, Mrs. R. H. (Marjorie) Turnbull, Port Carling. and Mrs. Val (Ruth) Taylor, Toronto; two brothers, Dr. J. A. Hilliard, Huntsville, and Frank, Waterloo, a sister, Mrs. William (Evangeline) Greene, Key Biscayne, Fla., 10 grandchildren i and eight great-grandchildren.

A son, Wilfred, who was also elected mayor of Waterloo in 1947, died last year, and a second son, Lloyd, died in 1911. One daughter, Mrs. George (Delight) Hutcheson, died in March of this year, and he was also predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.

The body will be at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home until noon Wednesday when removal will be made to First United Church, Waterloo, for service at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. R. H. McColl. Burial will be in Waterloo Mount Hope cemetery.

In 1868 William Hilliard was born in Glen Allen where his father owned a small newspaper. Upon completion of school, he attended the University of Toronto where he graduated as a doctor in 1891 at the age of 23. When his family moved to Waterloo, Hilliard accompanied them, setting up a medical practice in the town in 1897. He became Medical Director for Equitable Life Assurance Company when it was established in 1920 and also became a director of the Dominion Life Assurance Company, a business his father had helped establish. Hilliard was an enthusiastic Methodist lay reader and a strong supporter of the British war effort during World War I. A sports enthusiast, he continued to lead an active lifestyle into his 90s. When he was elected Mayor in 1916 \endash 1917, Hilliard became one of only two men in the town's history to assume this position without first having served on council. The war years saw council, under Hilliard's leadership, support the British war effort and a soldiers' insurance plan for local recruits. On the home front, the question of amalgamation with Berlin was rejected in 1916, improvements in service were made to the Berlin and Waterloo Street Railway and the municipality purchased William Snider's mill pond, a key piece of property in the town's core. Following his mayoral term, Hilliard continued his medical practice and later served as the Town of Waterloo's Medical Officer of Health from 1940 \endash 1946. HILLIARD, WILFRED LAURIER

Aged 69 years, of 115 Roslin Ave. S. in Waterloo, former mayor of Waterloo, on Monday, October 11, 1965, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, after a lengthy illness. Born at Morriston, he lived in Waterloo most of his life. He was elected to town council as alderman in 1913 and served as deputy-reeve in 1944-45, reeve in 1946 and mayor in 1947 and 1948, when Waterloo was incorporated as a city. He was employed for more than forty years at Dominion Life Assurance Company, where he was an associate actuary. He was a curler and was on the provincial championship lawn bowling rink in 1950. Service Thursday afternoon in Waterloo.

Wilfred Hilliard was born in 1896 the son of former mayor Dr. William Hilliard (1916-1917) and grandson of Thomas Hilliard, one of the founders of the Dominion Life Assurance Company. As a member of the 118th Battalion and the signal corps, Hilliard served three years overseas during World War I. Upon his return to Waterloo, he joined the Dominion Life Assurance Company where he worked for forty years, retiring as an associate actuary.
Hilliard was a member of the Methodist Church (now First United) where he served as steward, trustee and elder. He was a member of the Waterloo Curling Club and an avid lawn bowler, being on the provincial championship team in 1950.
Prior to his election as mayor in 1947, Hilliard served as a member of town council between 1933-1934 and 1943-1946. He was elected as deputy reeve in 1944 - 45 and reeve in 1946. During his term in office as mayor, he served on various committees including Charity and Relief, K-W Airport, Grand River Conservation, St. Mary s Hospital Advisory Board and the Memorial Arena Commission.
While in office Wilfred Hilliard worked towards the expedient opening of the Waterloo Memorial Arena (February 15, 1947) and successfully pursued changing Waterloo s status from a town to a city (January 1, 1948).
Hilliard was successfully re-elected to a second mayoral term, serving as the City of Waterloo s first mayor in 1948.

Jerry H.L.W. Flynn

It was morning on September 12, 1918 when a Waterloo mother received two pieces of mail '96 a letter from her son, a pilot fighting overseas in the Great War, and a telegram from the secretary of the Canadian Air Force. One can only wonder which letter Mrs. Lilly Flynn opened first. The letter from her 19-year-old son, Captain Jerry Flynn, was dated August 13 and he wrote of being in good health. The telegram from Ottawa told Mrs. Flynn that her son was reported missing on September 3.

The story of Jerry Flynn is but one story of the losses that Waterloo families suffered in the Great War between 1914 and 1918. Jerry Flynn was one of sixteen Waterloo soldiers who died.....


It would be much later that newsreaders in Waterloo would learn of the agony "Little Jerry's" squadron would express the day he went tumbling down in flames after being shot by one of a dozen Fokkers. In 1967, the Waterloo Chronicle published an account by Captain Bogart Rogers of the moment Flynn's comrades learned the "pet of the squadron" had lost his life:

On that day the whole outfit blew up like a toy balloon. A kid
named John Trussler, grabbed his champagne glass, hurled it the
length of the mess, leaped to his feet and started a vivid impression
of a lunatic . . . he swore and cursed and cried. He cursed God
and the Germans. He cursed the war and the army. He cursed his
parents because he was born.

He told Little Jerry Flynn who he knew was sitting in the room
listening to him, who was sitting right there in that chair that he
didn't have to worry. They couldn't get away with it.
His comrades tried to stop his cursing and raving and finally
pulled him down into a chair. He hid his head in his hands and
sobbed horribly. Half of the others were sobbing. The rest were
trying to quieten things down but feeling no better themselves.

Dear mother of Harry of Route 1, Elmira, Mrs. Laverne (Myrtle) Jantzi of Levittown, Pa., Mrs. Roy (Lorraine) Fischer of Kitchener. Eight grandchildren also survive; sister of Albert Hilliard of Route 2, Waterloo, Mrs. Harry (Vera) Smith of Fonthill and Mrs. Ela Hoffman of California. One son Carl and one sister predeceased her.

Visitation was at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, until Tuesday noon, when removal was made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church for funeral services at 2:30 pm. Interment in the Elmira cemetery.

HILLIARD, Thomas Thayer - Passed away peacefully, Friday, September 3, 2004, at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, Tom Hilliard, in his 76th year.

Beloved husband of Marion (Holtze) Hilliard. Loving father of Cheryl and her husband Ken Koch of Kitchener, David Hilliard and his wife Dianna, Janet and her husband Paul McCoy all of London, and Tammy and her husband Mark Law of Guelph. Grandfather of Marcia, Greg, Carly, Cole. Step-father of Brenda and Rob Fraser of Kitchener. Step-grandfather of Becky, Holly, T.J., Aaron, Brandon. Step-great-grandfather of Daniel. Dear brother of Catherine and Mark Kekanovich of Kitchener, Harry and Alice Hilliard of Sauble Beach, Marge and Wes Cochrane of Kitchener.

Predeceased by his first wife, Mildred (nee Stahle) Hilliard (1994); parents, Harry and Flora Hilliard and grandson, Christopher McCoy (1984).

Tom retired from Canada Post after 30 years' service. He was a member of R.C.L. Branch No. 530, Waterloo and during his retirement he enjoyed his involvement in the Second Chance Campers, Easy Riders Cycling Club and was an avid line dancer.

Tom's family received relatives and friends from 7-9 pm Monday at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener 749-8467. Interment 1 pm, Tuesday, September 7, 2004 today at Woodland Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Reformation Lutheran Church (456 Krug St., Kitchener) at 2 pm, Rev. Dale Finch officiating.
