Edward Bristow Crosses Great Divide

In last week's issue of the Signet, mention was made of the death of Mr. Edward Bristow. He passed away, at Kitchener, due to the infirmaties of old age, on Monday, April 12, having reached the ripe age of 86 years, 8 months and 12 days.

He was one of the earliest residents of Elmira, having come with his parents, in 1835, when two years of age. His father and his uncle were pioneers. His uncle conducted the first store and post-office opened in Elmira. His father settled on the farm now owned by Mr. Louis Schroer, and for many years known as the Allemang homestead. When Mr. Edward Bristow's father died, the former took up residence in Elmira and followed the occupation of a day laborer.

He married and to he and his wife were born two sons and two daughters. The sons are Clarence of Michigan and Frank, whose place of residence is unknown. One of the daughters, Florence, married Mr. Charles Koellen, then a clerk in Elmira. They afterwards removed to Windsor. Mrs. Koellen has since died. The other daughter, Hattie, married Mr. Geo. White, V. S., of Peel. They afterwards moved to the United States.

Mr. Bristow went about ten years ago to St. Agatha to live being employed by a family as a gardener. Owing to this family having sold part of their home to a bank, Mr. Bristow went to Kitchener to spend the winter intending to return this spring and resume his duties as a gardener. Before going to St. Agatha, Mr. Bristow made his home for some years with the late Mr. George Bauman, who lived at the south end of Elmira. He was also a friend of Mr. Aaron Bauman and the latter assisted in making arrangements for the funeral.

Mr. Bristow is remembered here as a hardworking man, having a quiet disposition and likeable qualities. He stood well in the esteem of those who knew him. On Thursday afternoon his remains were interred in the Union Cemetery here, from the residence of Mr. F. D. Bristow. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. Webster. The pallbearers were Messrs. Philip Christman, George Ruppel, George Auman, Oliver Amy, A. Winger and George Klinck. Owing to the shortness of the notice, there were not as many citizens and friends present as there would otherwise have been.
