On Friday of last week, the earthly remains of Katherine Ziegler, mother of David Ziegler, Elmira, were buried in the Lutheran Cemetery here. Deceased died on the 13^th at the asylum at London where she had spent the last 33 years suffering from mental derangement. A funeral service was held in the Lutheran church; where a large number of friends, gathered in honour of the deceased. The husband of the deceased lay ill at the home of one of the sons in Michigan, and could not be at the funeral ??? the age of 76 years and leaves behind her husband, 5 sons, 3 daughters, ? grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

David Ziegler, 85, of Elmira, died Monday at a Guelph nursing home following a lengthy illness. He was born April 17, 1860, at St. Jacobs. The late Mr. Ziegler attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elmira.

Surviving are two sons, Addison of Kitchener and Andrew of Elmira; five daughters, Mrs. L. W. (Florence) Koser, Winnipeg, Mrs. Clara Evers, Guelph, Mrs. Minnie Witter, Galt, Mrs. Otto (Thelma) Wille, St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Walter (Verina) Sutton, Kitchener; two brothers, William, Elkton, Mich., and Charles, Akron, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Soehner, Kitchener and Mrs. Charles Soehner, Elkton, Mich. His wife predeceased him in 1926. Two sons and a daughter also predeceased him. Seven grand children and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Remains are resting at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel, Elmira, from where the funeral service will be held. on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. Burial will be made in Elmira Cemetery. Rev. F. Malinsky will officiate.

Frederick A. Ziegler, 59, of 21 Park Ave., Elmira, died at K-W Hospital Friday after a short illness.

He was born in St. Jacobs, October 29, 1894, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ziegler. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and attended Zion Evangelical U.B. Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Mabel Allgeier; one son, William H. of Elmira; one brother, Titus of Elora; and two sisters, Mrs. Ivory Brockett of Montana and Mrs. William Howcraft, Sr., of Elora.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Tuesday at 1 p.m., when removal was made to Zion Church for funeral service at 3 p.m. Rev. J. W. Siebert officiated. Burial was in Elmira Cemetery.

Ruth Barbara Ziegler, of Toronto, daughter of Mr. David Ziegler, Elmira, tragically came to her death on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, as the result of being struck by a motor car the previous night. Returning home on foot from a Toronto dance hall, Miss Ziegler who lived at 41 Indian Road, was struck and fatally injured, and her escorts Dudley and Cebert Binet, brothers, of the same address, were both injured by a motor car driven by Chas. Chousky. The girl's skull was fractured. She was picked up, bleeding and unconscious, and taken in a passing motor car to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she died of cerebral hemorrhage [sic]. Durley [sic] Binet suffered shoulder injuries. He was also taken to hospital. His brother escaped with a shaking up. Charles Chousky, of 188 Markham street, was arrested Monday morning by Constable Westover on a charge of criminal negligence.

Tells Story of Crash

Dudley will recover from the accident. His brother said: "Dudley, Ruth and I left the dance hall about 11: 45 p.m. and were proceeding south to get a street car home. I was walking well over to the west side of the road. Ruth was in the centre, and Dudley on the outside. We were all linked arm in arm. When about 200 feet from the dance hall, without any warning at all, a Chevrolet touring car came from behind and struck Dudley and Ruth, while I was left standing on my feet. "Dudley was thrown about ten feet, while Ruth was knocked into the embankment on the side of the road. The car proceeded about 30 feet and stopped. Dudley's clothes were torn off. "I rushed towards the girl, who was nearest to me, picked her up and placed her head on my knees. She was bleeding badly about the head, and all she said was, 'What's the matter?'

Six in Death Car

"There were six passengers in the Chevrolet car, two of whom came back and picked up Dudley, who was unconscious, and two assisted me with Ruth. They were placed in the car and rushed to the hospital. "The driver of the car seemed to be pretty well shaken up, and said that he did not see us on account of the glaring headlights on a taxi which was going north. One of the other passengers drove the car to the hospital, and the driver, along with two of his passengers, followed in the taxi to the hospital." As the unfortunate girl had only been living two weeks at Indian Road, the Binet family were uncertain of her father's address, and word of the accident did not reach Elmira until Sunday morning. Because of this delay the father, David Ziegler, brother, Andrew Ziegler, and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Witter reached the hospital too late to see her alive.

The late Miss Ziegler was born in Elmira and attended the public and high schools here. She then graduated from the Canada Business College, Kitchener, and for the past five years has been employed in the office of Dr. Beaumont, a lawyer, in Toronto. She is survived by her father (her mother having passed away only a year ago), two brothers, Addison of Kitchener, and Andrew, of Elmira, and five sisters, Florence (Mrs. L.W. Koser), Winnipeg; Clara (Mrs. George Evers), Guelph; Minnie (Mrs. Clayton Witter), Kitchener; Thelma (Mrs. Charles Halliday), Winnipeg, and Verna (Mrs. Walter Sutton), Kitchener. The funeral service, which was held on Wednesday afternoon from the home of Mr. Andrew Ziegler, to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was largely attended.

BECHTEL, Clayton Orville (February 5, 1923 - March 23, 2014)

Our Dad told us he was "just waiting for Jesus" and on Sunday, March 23rd, Jesus reached down and gently released him of all pain and suffering. Jesus took his hand and guided him to his heavenly home, there waiting for him was his beloved wife, Mary (Horst) and his oldest son Dennis Ray. Left behind here on earth to miss him dearly are his children, Janice Schultz (Bruce) of Cambridge, Murray Bechtel (Diana) of Waterloo, and Connie Anthony (Mel) of Richmond, B.C. He was a proud grandfather of thirteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his brother Lester Bechtel. Orville spent many years operating a dairy farm near Breslau, same farm he was born and raised on, before retiring to Fairview, twenty-four years ago. He was a lifetime member of Wanner Mennonite Church. Orville was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Milton, brothers Elton and Roy and sister Hilda. His family would like to thank the Fairview nursing staff, for all their wonderful care and support. In Memory of Lester (Howard) Bechtel 1929 - 2021

Passed away peacefully, at Nithview Community's Long Term Care Home on January 24, 2021. Loving dad to Bruce and his wife Diane Lichti, (children Craig and Evan); Cheryl and her husband Chris Whelan, (children Brendan and his wife Talin and son Mekai, Kevin, Wayne and son Cobain); Deb and her husband Cam Shapansky, (children Gabbi and Reuben); and Peter and his wife Anna Kabetova (son Matthew). Also remembered by the Lichty family. Lester was a loving husband to the late Alma (Bast) Bechtel (1994) and the late Dorothy (Zehr Lichty Worden) Bechtel (2009). He was predeceased by his brothers, Elton and Orville and their wives, and Roy and his sister Hilda.

Lester was an intensely practical and humble man who would be happier with a short tribute. He was a successful dairy farmer near Breslau. He was a lifelong member of Wanner Mennonite Church. He liked to whistle, work hard and be outdoors. While farming was the practical choice for him, he was a big proponent of education and specifically Mennonite education. He expressed this through support of Mennonite educational institutions, reading, constant learning and sponsorship of the ongoing Bechtel Lectures at Conrad Grebel University College, which was created to provide the public access to rich academic experiences. He retired young and took different opportunities to travel far, travelling extensively to attend Mennonite World Conference gatherings.

He looked forward to family get togethers and being at his kids' homes, often sitting back quietly observing. Lester was generous with his time and resources, slow to judge, a deep thinker and amateur philosopher. He carried his ability to 'field-fix' a tractor to all areas of his life. He enjoyed a long and healthy life using his time well.

Special thanks to Nithview's second floor staff for such loving and compassionate care during very difficult times. We are grateful for the constant communication and many video calls.

A private family visitation will take place. A livestreamed celebration of life will be held Thursday, January 28 at 1pm. Relatives and friends may join the family in the livestream of the service at www.erbgood.com. Cremation will take place, because as Lester said, "Why would you want to mess up a perfectly good patch of sod?"

Harry E SOEHNER SOEHNER, Harry Edgar Passing on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, Harry Soehner, 92 years of Elmira. Harry and Marjorie (Mulholland) were married June 21, 1941 in Elmira. Father of: John of Bolingbroke, Tom (Anne Hopping) of Campbell River B.C., David (Linda) of Holland Center, Mark (Cindy Judd) of Calgary, Joyce (Bob) Rees of Gormley. Brother of: Joyce Strebel of Toronto, Connie Wideman of Kitchener, Janice (Merle) Manto of Edmonton. Predeceased by his parents Henry and Bertha (Hoelscher) Soehner, daughter Diane Craig (1994), son Douglas (1984), brother Wallace, sister Pauline Walser, infant brother Lorne. Born August 31, 1917 and living his full life in Elmira, he delivered newspapers as a youth, that opened the door to being hired full-time by Dominion Rubber on his 16th birthday in 1933 (August 31st). In order to confirm the job hiring, and only 5'6" and 110 pounds, he demonstrated his physical ability by lifting a 100 pound box chest-high and placing the box on a shelf. By age 23 he had worked his way up to operations foreman, one of the first eight employees activating Naugatuck Chemicals in 1941, producing vital high explosive stabilizers for the war effort. Harry was also Sergeant Soehner of the reserve 24th Medical Company in Kitchener. He was the Chief, Naugatuck Fire Brigade from inception in 1942. He became a highly recognized authority on chemical fires.

Harry retired from Uniroyal in 1974 at 41 years service and age 56. With his chemical knowledge he was sought after and joined the Elmira volunteer brigade in 1945 and retired as Chief, Elmira Fire Department at age 65 in 1982. He was very active in the established Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs. In 1952 he was an organizer and promoter of the Waterloo County Fire Mutual Aid System that included the Naugatuck Chemicals industrial brigade. Outside of his career he was very active in local sports and recreation. In the winter of 1936-1937 Harry was a goalie on four organized hockey teams. He was driven dressed for back-to-back games with skates on. The four leagues' schedules were organized around his schedule! The Waterloo Dominion Life Junior B won the Ontario championship that year. Harry's team photo is in the Waterloo arena. The Waterloo Siskins count this team as year two of their lineage. Coming out of retirement, he was goalie for the 1951-1952 Elmira Polar Kings, Ontario Intermediate B Champs! It was the first year of artificial ice in the new Elmira Memorial Arena, and at 34 years age, Harry was the old man on the team! In the late 1930s and 1940s Harry was a scout master and recruited his young bride Marjorie as the cook at summer camp. The couple and the scouts always had a good time camping out at the Wallenstein Conestogo River flats.

In 1948 he hand-built his impressive two story colonial style house that remains at 250 Arthur Street South, Elmira, N3B 2P2. He and Marjorie together raised seven fine children in the house. An extra acre of fruit trees and garden provided garden fresh food and preserves. Harry was devoted to his wife Marjorie. These were inseparable partners for 68 years. His community was very important to him as represented by his civic leadership. He was the township school board representative building John Mahood School in 1954. He was active on the church board during the fellowship hall addition in 1964. With son Douglas born mentally handicapped in 1961, both parents were active in helping the association in the Elmira area. Guiding Light School, Arc Industries, and Reid Woods Home were built while Harry was a director. To beautify the town, Harry sprayed dandelions in the late 1940s through 1980s. "Weed Free Elmira" was the slogan in 1948, using 2, 4 D produced at Naugatuck Chemicals. Harry led a full, responsible, rewarding and productive life. He was constantly and willingly in Service to others, and Him. He will be missed by those whose lives he touched. Visitation at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, on Friday, April 2, 2010 from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service to celebrate Harry's life and faith at St. James Lutheran Church, Elmira, on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Hans Borch officiating. In Elmira, champions receive their Championship Ride on the now-retired red 1949 GMC Maple Leaf fire truck. Harry Soehner will receive his Life-Time Achievement Championship Ride, and final fire truck ride, resting forevermore at St. James Lutheran Cemetery. Harry Soehner was a Champion. He made a difference to his family, friends and community!
