Not unexpected came the news on Monday morning that Henry Stumpf had passed away during the night for he had been for some days in a very low condition. Deceased was born in 1850 in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. In 1858 he came to this neighborhood with his mother and brothers, his father having come over the year before. The mother and children then went to live for about a year at Omaha, Nebraska, where the mother and the youngest son, Peter, died of typhoid fever. Then the other members of the family came back to Woolwich, where the deceased hewed out a home for himself in the swamp northeast of this village. In 1873 he chose for himself a helpmate in the person of Mary Gimber, who shared with him for nearly forty years the joys and sorrows the toils and pleasures of life, and who is now left bereft of a kind and faithful husband. To Mr. and Mrs. Stumpf were born eleven children, all of whom survive and are grown up. They are: Casper on the old farm homestead, Sophia (Mrs. S. Schedewitz), Yatton; Katie (Mrs. Henry Delion), of Berlin; Mary (Mrs. John Hilgartner) near Strasburg; Lizzie, Stella and Otto at home; Conrad, at Listowel ; Caroline (Mrs. Arthur Aljoe), near Hanover; Gertrude (Mrs. Arthur Beilstein), Berlin. Of these there were two pairs of twins, namely Stella and Otto, and Conrad and Caroline.

Deceased learned the trade of mason and generally worked at it through the summer months as his work on the farm would allow. Ten years ago he moved with his family to Elmira and here he followed his trade more exclusively taking many building contracts. About four years ago he built the bakery which he conducted in partnership with his eldest son. Later on he took it all over into his own hands and built the fine block now used in connection with the business. As a citizen of Elmira Mr. Stumpf was progressive, fearing not to make investments to help build up the town, and as a business man he spared neither expense nor trouble to have his business up-to-date and to give his customers the best possible service. As a man he was strictly honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow men.

As to his illness, he had several ribs fractured while yet a boy and this injury not having been properly attended to in time caused ulcers on the lung. As years wore on this trouble became worse, and developed chronic bronchitis. Latterly his heart became weak and heart failure was the immediate cause of death.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended.

The family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

John Stumpf, a resident of Elmira for the past 40 years, passed away suddenly Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock, at the age of 63 years, two months and eight days. He was taken ill only one week ago with flu which developed into pneumonia, resulting in his death. Born in Paterson, N.J., the late Mr. Stumpf came to Canada when he was 12 years of age and settled near Elmira where he lived for a number of years before moving into town 40 years ago. He was married in 1885 to Catharine Strange, by whom he is survived, as well as by one son, Alex, of Kitchener, and two grandchildren Five brothers and two sisters also survive: Jacob, William and George, of Detroit; Albert, of Kitchener; Sylvester, of Elmira; Kate (Mrs. Henry Strange), of Claresholm, Alberta, and Minnie (Mrs. Chapman), of Waterloo, Ontario. One sister, Jennie (Mrs. Moore), of Kincardine, died 13 years ago. Mr. Stumpf was for 28 years employed first in the old Felt Factory and later in the Elmira Rubber Factory. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late residence, 35 Church street, to St. Paul's Lutheran church for service. Interment will take place in the Elmira cemetery.

Otto Stumpf, 61, of 3 Ernst St., Elmira, died April 1 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He had been employed at the Merchants Rubber Co. in Kitchener until three years ago. Mr. Stumpf was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stumpf of Woolwich Township. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elmira. Surviving are his wife, the former Edna Ernst, a son Howard, of Kitchener, two daughters, Mrs. Frederick (Alice) Parker of Elmira, and Miss Mae Stumpf at home; three brothers, Caspar of Elmira, Harry of Meaford, and Conrad of Kitchener, also seven sisters, Mrs. Simon Schedewitz, Mrs. Frederick McAuley, Mrs. A. Alger, Mrs. Arthur Beilstein, all of Kitchener, Mrs. John Hilgardner of Preston, Mrs. John Miller of Elmira and Mrs. A. Hertz of Waterloo. Four grandchildren also survive.

Remains rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel, Elmira, where funeral service were held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Burial was made in Elmira Cemetery. Rev. F. P. Malinsky officiated.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John S. Stumpf, he was born at Elmira in 1888. He was an employee of the Kitchener Water Commission for the past 20 years. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and the Canadian Order of Foresters.

He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Long, whom he married in 1913; two daughters, Mrs. Victor (Dorothea) Herman of Kitchener and Mrs. Victor (Mildred) Potter of Toronto. One grandchild also survives.

The funeral will be held Mon-day at 2 p.m. at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home with interment in Elmira Cemetery.

Rev. Finlay Stewart will officiate. The body is resting at the funeral home.

Several Bridgeport residents appeared in police court recently on assault charges. Oscar Stadelbauer charged Ed. Stumpf with assault. The case was adjourned until June 16th, in order to secure witnesses. In another case Ed. Stumpf was charged with using insulting language and threatening to murder Lillian Diebold. Stumpf and his wife. however, charged it was the Diebold woman who used insulting language. The case was dismissed by the magistrate.

WELLESLEY WOMAN NOT GUILTY OF SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Mrs. Lillian Diebold of Wellesley township was found not guity in Kitchener police court on Monday of attempted suicide. She told the court that she had merely tied the rope around her neck to scare her husband. There had been a party at the house the night before she said, and she disapproved of her husband drinking, so that she believed that if she gave him a good scare she might prevent his indulgence in the future.

Magistrate Weir ordered the woman to be released and lectured her husband regarding drinking in the future.

Howard was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and had been president of the Kitchener Theatres Ltd., having been involved with movie theatres for 47 years beginning in 1925 and retiring in 1972. He was a charter member of the Waterloo Lions, a life member of the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club and the Canadian Picture pioneers. Husband of the former Florence McKee-Shackleton; father of Mrs. Joan Blackie of Toronto, brother of Mrs. Gertrude Weichel of Elmira and Rita and her husband Carl Dune of Kitchener; four grandchildren, Susan Legris of Toronto, Barbara and her husband Joseph Streker of Binbrook. Robert Blackie of Burlington and Mark O'Leavey of Kitchener; one great-granddaughter, Brianne Streker; two step-children, Kevin Shackleton and Margaret Shackleton of Kitchener. Predeceased by his parents, Simon Schedewitz and Sophie Stumpf; his first wife Gertrude Merklinger; a daughter, Jean O'Leavey and one brother, Clayton. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 pm, on Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Queen Street, Kitchener, where the funeral service will be held at 2 pm, with Pastor Allan Scharlech officiating. RETA PEARL DUNKE1917-2009 Passed away peacefully, Reta Pearl Dunke was received into the arms of Jesus on the morning of Friday, July 10, 2009. She was 92 years old. She was the former Reta Schedewitz, daughter of the late Simon and Sophia Schedewitz. Born in Yatton on January 10, 1917 where she was raised and also lived in Elmira, Waterloo and for many years on Morrison Road in Kitchener. For the past five years, she has been a resident of Victoria Place in Kitchener. Reta married Carlton Dunke on July 19, 1958. He predeceased her in 1993. She is survived by six nieces and nephews, June Pettie, Wayne Schedewitz, Joan Blackie, Gloria Wegener, Michael and William Weichel. A special great-nephew, Mark O'Leavey also survives. Many great nieces and nephews will remember her. Predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Weichel; two brothers, Clayton and Howard Schedewitz; a niece, Jean O'Leavey; and a nephew, William Schedewitz. Reta loved to paint landscapes and she was fond of travelling. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Kitchener and she spoke many times of her love for the Lord. Reta's family would be pleased to receive relatives and friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo Saturday, July 11, 2009 (today) from 6 - 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Rev. SENT FLOWERS HOME THAT WERE PICKED AT LENS

Henry Delion, of the Telegraph staff this morning received a letter from his son, Bugler Harry Delion, who enlisted with the 118th Battalion, in which he sent a number of interesting souvenirs of the Canadian drive on Lens. They were English flowers that had been planted near the mining city and were in bloom at the present and which were picked by young Delion during one of the assaults that were made by the Canadian troops on the city. Bugler Delion states that he is growing tall, fat and strong but he needs every ounce he has for the work that they are being called upon to delay after day. He informs his parents that the parcels sent by them and friends are being received regularly.

The funeral of the late Paula Herz, which was held Sunday afternoon was very largely attended. Short services were held at the residence of her parents and St. Paul's Lutheran Church which was crowded with about 500 persons. Rev. A. Gallmeier officiated. The pall bearers were Messrs. Carl Ruppel, Claire Schaub, Otto Klink, Otto Herz, Carl Hahn and Carl Class. The beautiful flowers received testified to the affection in which the little girl was held. Plan Separate Rites for Shooting Victims

Separate funeral services will be conducted Monday for the three dead in yesterday's shooting at Waterloo Spring Company, Ltd.

Services for Donald Huras, 27, and Frederick Beilstein, 41, will be conducted in the afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church by Rev. Arthur Eissfeldt.

The body of Mr. Beilstein will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 11 am Monday when it will be removed to the church where friends may pay their respects until the service at 2 pm. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Same Funeral Home

The body of Mr. Huras will be at the same funeral home until Monday at 2 pm. The service will be at the church at 3:30 pm. Interment will be in Memory Gardens.

Both Mr. Huras and Mr. Beilstein were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Mr. Huras is survived by his wife, the former Norma Browne; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin D. Huras; Waterloo, three brothers, Roy and James, Kitchener; Weyburn, Waterloo; and one sister, Mrs. Donald (Dorothy) Mairs, Rexdale, Ont.

Mr. Beilstein is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Beilstein, Kitchener; five brothers, William, Hugo, Arthur, Robert, all of Kitchener; Richard, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Karl Kurt, Jefferson, Ohio, and Mrs. Herbert Parker, Kitchener.

Service at 9 A.M.

The body of Frank Riem, 35, will be at the Gruhn Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited tomorrow at 8 pm. Prayers will be said Monday at 8:30 am and the service will be at St. Mary's RC Church at 9 am. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Mr. Riem was born in Yugoslavia in 1920 and came to Canada in 1927. He was a member of St. Mary's RC Church.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathies Riem, Kitchener; four brothers, Matthew and Fred, Kitchener; Martin, Los Angeles, Calif.; Anthony, Hawkesville and one sister, Mrs. Anne De Martin, Kitchener.

Veteran World War II

Robert Beilstein passed away peacefully in Owen Sound on September 16, 2008 in his 89th year. A former resident of Kitchener, husband of the late Helen Beilstein, he is survived by his sister Marie Kurt of Kitchener, daughter Betty Telford of London, son Larry Beilstein of Kitchener, grandchildren Danielle (Beilstein) Butler of Toronto, Jon Beilstein of Elmira, Nicolas Telford of Toronto, and Nicole Beilstein/Litwiller of Elmira and great-granddaughter Lucille Butler of Toronto.

Cremation has been overseen by the Hendrick Funeral Home of Mount Forest; a private family memorial gathering will occur at a later time.
