    MRS. CLARA CONRAD

    A Waterloo resident for most of her life, Mrs. Clara. Conrad, 82, died Friday, February 6th, at the home of her daughter at 222 Poplar Plains road, Toronto, after a short illness

    Mrs. Conrad was noted in the Twin Cities for her activity in community work, and Conrad Hall at Waterloo College was named in her honor.

    She was born in Elmira, May 17, 1876. Her husband, Jacob Conrad, died in 1956. Mrs. Conrad had lived with her daughter for more than two years.

    She was the first president of the Women's Auxiliary of Waterloo College and had been active in the K-W Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society.

    Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harold M. (Gertrude) Cowan of Toronto, and Mrs. Waldemar (Peggy) Neufeld of New Preston, Conn.; one sister, Mrs. Emma Snyder of Garden City, New York, and five grandchildren. Burial was in St. James' Cemetery, Elmira.

    Clara married Jacob Conrad 20 Jul 1989, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Jacob (son of Mayor Jacob Conrad and Wilhelmina Dorothea Louisa Kriesel) was born 10 Jul 1869, Waterloo City, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 1956; was buried , Saint James Lutheran Cemetery, Elmira, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada.     The funeral was held in Reading, Pa., on Monday for Dr. O. J. Specker, formerly of Kitchener, who passed away on Saturday after a lingering illness. He had practiced dentistry n Reading for more than 30 years.

    Besides his widow, the former Delphine Froehlich of Waterloo, he is survived by one son, Dr. J. C. Specker of Reading, three sisters, Mrs. W. Snyder of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Jacob Conrad, Waterloo, and Mrs. L. Andres of Waterloo.

    Margaret Neufeld, 93, was part of local art culture

    Margaret (Conrad) Neufeld, 93, of Canaan died Oct. 2, 2008 at the Geer Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 27, 1914, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, where she later met her husband, artist Woldemar Neufeld. She graduated from Waterloo Lutheran College (now Wilfrid Laurier University) in 1937.

    The couple married in 1939 and 10 years later they moved to New Milford, where they set up an art school and gallery on New Preston Hill Road.

    Along with raising their four children, she hosted gallery exhibitions that became anticipated events through the 1960s.

    In 1988 Woldemar and Peggy Neufeld moved to Whittlesey Avenue, where she lived until 2005. During this time she was a member of the First Congregational Church and The New Milford Trust for Historical Preservation.

    In 1955, she acquired a teaching degree from Danbury State Teacher's College, now Western Connecticut State University.

    She taught first grade at the East Street School and then second grade at the John Pettibone School and the Hill and Plain School until her retirement in 1982.

    She is survived by two sons, Conrad Neufeld of Newtown and Laurence Neufeld of Warren, along with six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Woldemar Neufeld in 2002, a daughter, Julie Neufeld in 1979 and a son, Marc Neufeld in 2000.

    Private memorial services will be held later this month at the First Congregational Church in New Milford.

    The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
