    AIKENS, JAMES

    The funeral of Mr. Aikens took place on Tuesday afternoon from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church to the Hespeler Cemetery. He was in his 89th year and before his removal to Hamilton, where he resided with his daughter until his death on Sunday evening, October 12, 1919, had resided for many years on the 3rd concession of Puslinch and was well known and highly respected by a wide circle. He was predeceased some years ago by his wife and one son and is survived by two sons and three daughters. The services were conducted by Dr. Dougall of Hamilton. Many old friends from Hespeler attended.

    At his home, 2nd concession, lot 8, Puslinch Township, on Thursday morning, [July 6, 1933]. He had been ill for sixteen years but had been confined to bed for three months. Born on the 3rd concession, in his 75th year, he was a lifelong resident of the district and a contractor by trade. He had not been in good health for a number of years and it was about three months ago that he took to his bed. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Survived by wife; three sons, James at home; Thomas on the homestead, 3rd concession of Puslinch; Albert of Detroit; daughter, Mrs. Alex Smith of Galt; three sisters, Mrs. John Kellerman and Mrs. William Brown of Guelph; and Mrs. Frank Howard of Hamilton. Funeral on Saturday at 2: 30 from his home, conducted by Rev. T. G. Marshall of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. Patterson Hall of Knox Presbyterian Church in Galt. Pallbearers: W. H. Bolger, John R. Little, William J. Little, Donald McCaig, Gordon McKay and William Ross. Interment Hespeler Cemetery

    AIKENS, THOMAS

    The funeral of Mr. Aikens of Montreal, formerly of Hespeler and Puslinch, brother of William Aikens of Puslinch, was held on Monday, August 23, 1925 from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which Mr. Aikens attended when a resident of the district, to Hespeler Cemetery. Rev. J. L. Small of St. George officiated.

    He was a native of Puslinch, having been born in that township. Mr. Aikens was an old Hespeler boy and many attended the funeral to pay their last respects. He was in his 66th year. The pallbearers were William Bulger, George Paddock, John Gilchrist, William Gilchrist, Alex Smith and Donald McCaig. He leaves his one brother, William; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Long of Hamilton; Mrs. Jane Krueger and Mrs. John Kellerman of Guelph; and Mrs. Martha Brown of Waterdown.

    A native of Puslinch, suddenly, on Tuesday morning, [June 4, 1946], in the Galt General Hospital, in his 61st year. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Aikens of Puslinch. For the last forty years, he had been living in Detroit. He was a butcher by vocation. He was visiting his sister, Mrs. A. Smith in Galt, when he became ill suddenly and was rushed to the hospital. Surviving are his wife and one daughter, Eunice; two brothers, Thomas and James Aikens of Puslinch; and one sister, Mrs. A. Smith of Galt. Funeral on Thurs. , June 6th at 3 in Hespeler from the Stager & Co. Funeral Home on Galt St, with interment in Hespeler Cemetery. Rev. William Weir, pastor of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church officiated. Pallbearers: William Ross, John Leith, Wilson Aikens, Robert Aikens, Thomas Gilchrist and Thomas Ling.

He was born in Puslinch Township, where he resided all his life. Funeral service at the Nelson Funeral Home, 23 Galt St. in Hespeler on Wed. , June 21 at 2. Interment Hespeler Cemetery.

    AIKENS, THOMAS MIDDLETON

    Retired Road Superintendent of Wellington County, February 11, 1981, of R. R. #22, Cambridge, in his 95th year. Husband of the late Ada Amanda Rife. Father of Wilson of Valgagne. Also survived by eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Mr. Aikens was predeceased by two sons, two brothers and one sister. Service at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Blvd. in Cambridge(H) on Sat. , Feb. 14 at 2. Interment New Hope Cemetery, Hespeler. He was a Wellington County Roads employee for more than fifty years, and retired as foreman in 1960. He had been in good health but was outside in extreme cold weather and got pneumonia.

    Mabel only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Aikens of Hyman St. in London. She had been ill with Spanish influenza in October and had not fully regained her strength, when pneumonia set in, resulting in her death on Sunday morning, [February 16, 1919]. She was born in Puslinch 26 years ago, residing for a time in Hespeler and then in Galt, subsequently removing to London. The parents and remaining brother, William, as well as the relatives in this vicinity will have the sincere sympathy of all in this second bereavement in so short a time, their eldest son, Wilson, having been killed in action in France two years ago. The funeral, held from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Guelph (or from the Presbyterian Church in Hespeler - differing reports) on Wednesday afternoon, was largely attended.

    AIKENS, WILLIAM EARL

    A former resident of this district, now of Strabane, suddenly, at the intersection of Ottawa St. and Beach Road in Hamilton, as the result of a motor accident, at 12: 45 a. m. on Saturday morning, [October 18, 1941], in his 27th year. Husband of Rachel McIntosh. Eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Aikens of the 3rd concession of Puslinch Township. For seven years, he was employed by Alex Smith of Puslinch Township. Later he worked at Dominion Woollens and Worsted in Galt and recently at Dominion Byproducts Co. Rev. T. G. Marshall of Hespeler officiated at the funeral, assisted by Rev. J. C. Grier, minister of Knox Presbyterian Church in Guelph, who gave the address, from his parent's home, held on Tues. , Oct. 21s* at 2. Beautiful floral tributes were banked around the casket and many friends and relatives assembled. Cecil Lyness of the Guelph church sang a solo hymn. Flowerbearers were: Alex Smith, Frank Elliott, Lloyd Rife, Ken Crow, B. Smith, Gordon Mickus, George Cunnington, Jack Cunnington, Bert Yates, Donald Yates, Gordon Yates and Louis Evans. Pallbearers: William Macintosh and John Macintosh of Puslinch Township; Johnny Auliffe of R. R. #6, Guelph; Ted Scott of Spring Bay, Manitoulin Island; Alex Rife of Preston and Donald Smith of R. R. #2, Hespeler. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. John Littleton of Canton, Ohio; Mrs. Gowing, Harold and Robert; Daniel Henry of Deckerville; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yates, Bertram, Gordon and Donald of Toronto; Mrs. Will Scott, Edward and Beatrice of Manitoulin Island; Mr. Howard, William and James; John Ling and Miss Gladys Menary of Hamilton. Mr. Aikens met death when two cars collided head on. He was returning to his home at R. R. #4, Dundas from work at the Hamilton Byproducts Co. plant. He suffered a fractured skull, lacerations to the left leg, a broken leg and severe bruises. He died before medical aid could be secured. Orville Moyer of Hamilton, aged 22, a passenger in Mr. Aikens car was seriously injured, while the driver of the other car escaped uninjured. Born in Puslinch Township, Mr. Aikens had lived most of his life in that district, where he was widely known and well liked. He was married in Morriston last November. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Guelph. Interment Hespeler Cemetery. Surviving, besides his wife, are his parents and two brothers, Wilson of Sudbury and Robert, who is training with the R. C. A. F at Malton, Ontario.

    On March 17, 1960, in Edmonton, of Okotoks, AB, after a short illness, age 42. Survived by his wife, Christina "Chrissie" Lawrence; two daughters, Nancy Lee and Debbie, at home; his father, Thomas Aikens of R. R. #2, Hespeler; and one brother, Wilson, also of R. R. #2, Hespeler. Born in Puslinch Township, son of Thomas Aikens and Ada Rife, he moved to Okotoks twelve years ago. Previously, he resided in the Guelph-Puslinch area. Mr. Aikens was employed on the western oil fields. He was a member of Okotoks United Church. He was married in Guelph. Funeral service on Monday at 2 at the Okotoks United Church. Rev. Ian Holter officiated. Interment Okotoks Cemetery.
