Operation Leads To Death Of Alderman

Dr. Claude Reist Of Preston Fails To Rally From Appendicitis Surgery

PRESTON-Dr. Claude Reist, a member of the Preston Town Council and one of the community's leading physicians and surgeons, passed away in St. Mary's hospital at Kitchener at 12.30 o'clock this morning. He had recently entered hospital for an appendicitis operation.

News of Dr. Reist's passing came as a decided shock to citizens of Preston today. He had consulted a Hamilton friend some time ago and decided to enter hospital for the operation. Reports had indicated favorable progress but it is understood that over the weekend a turn far the worse developed. His condition became critical yesterday and after falling to rally he passed way. He was seriously ill some years ago with a bad heart condition, which aggravated his recovery in this illness.

Dr. Claude Reist entered the Town Council in the election of 19_5? when he drew one of the best votes ever recorded a man seeking public office. He was among the members of this year's council to be returned to office by acclamation in January.

Although a new official on the town's administrative body, the late Dr. Reist entered into the duties of office with zest. He was chosen chairman of the bylaws committee, the of the most important of the because of so many revisions amendments being required to codes governing business licences and so on. When the the committees were struck this year he again named to head this group and already had entered upon his task of making a number of alterations keeping with the times.

As one of the younger, and yet experienced business men in public here, Dr. Reist's name had frequently been mentioned for promotion and it would not have been surprising to have him contest a higher field next year, both the deputy reeveship and the reeveship being mentioned.

Dr. Reist was born Waterloo township 40 years ago. He was educated at school section 16 near his home and at the Galt Collegiate subsequently attending Queen's University. While in attendance there he enlisted in the Canadian Medical Corps, seeing service in Egypt. After the war he completed is medical course and graduated. He practised for a time in Tavistock and Collingwood, coming to Preston 16 years ago.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of St. Paul's United church and the Preston Rotary club. He is a past president of the South Waterloo Medical Association and was on the staff of the Galt General and St. Mary's hospitals. He was the staff medical representative on the St. Mary's Hospital board. He is survived by his mother, two brothers and a sister and by his widow, formerly Gladys Paul of Tavistock.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon with a short private service at his Queen street residence followed by a public service at 2.30 at St. Paul's United church. Burial will be made in the Preston Cemetery.
