PETER SHUPE DIED LAST NIGHT - RESULT OF HEART ATTACK

Character well known in City and surrounding district for his diary and singing school work died suddenly.

A genuine link with the history of Kitchener and Waterloo County for the past 60 years and more was broken last night at Toronto when Peter Shupe, compiler of his now famous diary, and veteran singing school teacher, died as a result of a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Thoman in Toronto. The late Mr. Shupe suffered spinal and head injuries in a fall two or three years ago and since then has not been in good health although he was confined to his bed for less than two weeks prior to his death. He was in his 79th year.

The deceased songster was very well known in the county, due largely to the numerous singing schools, an institution which has practically died out now, which he conducted. This special interest also carried Mr. Shupe into the surrounding counties and into the districts Vineland, Stouffville and Markham. He was a lifelong member of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church and for years was superintendent of the Sunday School at the Bethany Mennonite Church in this city. He retired from this position prior to his removal to Toronto 12 years ago, but continued as song leader both in the Sunday School and at the Church services until his departure from the city.

Another feature which made the late Mr. Shupe well known was his diary which he faithfully kept from the time he was a young man. For many years it has been a monthly feature of local newspapers which was read with much interest by thousands.

The deceased was rather a picturesque fellow with his snow white hair and beard and his cherry, jovial diposition. He always had a word of cheer for everyone he met. He is survivied by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Thoman of Toronro. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at the Bethany Mennonite Church, this City at 2: 30 and thence to the Breslau Mennonite cemetery for internment.
