    Death Of Thomas Stevenson

    Former Resident of This Village Was 97 Years of Age

    Highly Esteemed

    Word has been received here of the death at Ethelton, Sask., on Friday, September 26th, of Thomas Stevenson, a former resident of this village, aged 97 years. Mr. Stevenson was born in Paris, but lived in Ayr for some 30 years. For 20 years, he worked as a cooper for the former Goldie Milling Company at Greenfield. He later spent, two years at Windsor as foreman cooper at the salt works. Mr. Stevenson then decided to go west, where he homesteaded a farm at Loganton, Sask., and subsequently removed to a farm at Clavett, Sask. He had been residing with his son, Arthur, at Ethelton, Sask., for many years, and in 1923 came to Ayr for two years, where he resided at the home of his daughter, the late Mrs. Archie G. Watson. In religion, he was a Presbyterian, being a member of the former Stanley Street Church here. For many years, he was superintendent of the Sunday School and also was an elder of the church. Mr. Stevenson was highly respected by all with whom he came in contact and had many warm friends here. He is survived by the following four sons: Arthur, Ethelton, Sask.; Hedley, Enderby, B.C.; James, Saskatoon, Sask., and William, in the United States. His wife predeceased him many years ago. The late Mrs. Archie G. Watson and the late Mrs. William A. Watson were daughters. The funeral took place on Monday, September 29th, interment being made at Ethelton, Sask.

    Early Demise of Mrs. Wm. A. Watson

    The sad word was received here on Monday evening of the death of Mrs. Wm. A. Watson at Moosejaw, Sask., that day in her 56th year, and that Mr. Watson was leaving for Ayr with the body for interment here. Mrs. Watson, before her marriage, was Minnie F. Stevenson, eldest daughter of Mr. Thomas Stevenson, who spent her girlhood days in Greenfield, attending Ayr school. Beside the sorrowing husband, there are two daughters, Mrs. Horace Stovin, of Unity, Sask., and Mrs. Roy Campbell of Moosejaw, Sask. There are also a sister and four brothers-Mrs. Archie G. Watson, Ayr; William at Sheridan, Montana; Arthur at Ethelton, Sask.; Hedley at Enderby, B.C., and James at Saskatoon; also her father at Moosejaw. Mrs. Watson had always been closely connected with church work and given of her time and talents largely to missionary and charitable objects. The funeral will take place from Mr. A.G. Watson's home at 2: 30 p.m. on Friday.

    Mrs. James Houston Passes in 66th Year

    The death occurred at Toronto East General Hospital on Tuesday of a former Ayr resident, Mrs. James Houston in her 66th year. The former Mary Eunice Watson, she was born in Winnipeg, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Archibald G. Watson and came to Ayr with the family when she was twelve years of age. She received her education at Ayr Public and Continuation Schools and went on to become a school teacher. She married in 1931 to James Houston who passed away a year later. She resided at South Porcupine for some years and later returned to Ayr. In recent years she had lived in Toronto. While in Ayr Mrs. Houston was an active member of Knox United Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Cockburn (Emily) of Drumbo and Mrs. A. C. Whitelaw (Margaret) of Dearborn, Mich., and two brothers, David Watson of Kingston and Donald Watson of Paisley. Funeral service will be held at Knox United Church, Ayr, on Friday at 2 p.m., with interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    David Watson

    A former Ayr resident, David Watson of Peterborough passed away on Monday, March 2nd. He was in his 87th year. Born in Winnipeg on December 21, 1900, he was a son of the late Archie Gibb Watson and Margaret Stevenson. He came to Ayr with his parents as a youngster and received his schooling here. Mr. Watson joined the Bank of Commerce in Ayr; entered private business in Lindsay in 1945; joined the department of highways as an accountant in 1950 and retired in 1960. Predeceased by his wife, the former Mildred Tretheway in 1971. He is survived by one son Douglas of Barrie. Funeral service is being held (today) in Peterborough. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    Donald S. Watson Passes

    A well-known former Ayr resident, Donald Stevenson Watson of Markdale passed away in Markdale Hospital on Thursday. The late Mr. Watson, who was in his 59th year, had been in ill health for some time. He was born in Winnipeg, a son of the late Archie G. Watson and Margaret Stevenson Watson. He came to Ayr as a small child when his father was moved to the head office of the John Watson Mfg. Co. Ltd. plant here. He received his education here and was subsequently employed by the Watson firm for many years. During World War II Mr. Watson served overseas with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Mr. Watson was a popular figure here in social and fraternal circles. He was a valued member and a past master of Ayr Masonic Lodge. He also was active in the Ayr Tennis Club as well as other local organizations. In Markdale Mr. Watson was associated for a number of years with the Rotary Club. He left Ayr in 1947 to become a principal in a woodworking firm in Paisley. He later entered the insurance business and operated a successful agency in Markdale until his passing. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Kathleen Faus of Ayr, are a daughter, Jane, at home; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Cockburn (Emily) of Drumbo and Mrs. Arthur Whitelaw (Margaret) of North Port Charlotte, Florida, and a brother, David Watson of Peterborough. Funeral service was held in Markdale on Monday, with interment in Ayr Cemetery.
