    Notes:

Catherine (Sauder) Westfall was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., July 30, 1859; died at her home in St. Jacobs, Ont., Oct. 23, 1940; aged 81 y. 2 m. 24 d.

She was united in marriage in 1883 to William Westfall who predeceased her 6 years ago.

To this union were born 10 children of whom 7 survive: Magdalena (Mrs. John Heer), John, Lucinda (Mrs. Simon Wilkie), Christina (Mrs. Norman Brubacher), Mary Ann (Mrs. Nelson Martin), Amanda and Katie.

She also leaves 25 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers (Henry and John Sauder of St. Jacobs, Ont.).

Early in the morning of July 6, 1940, she took sick with a heart condition and complications which later proved to be internal cancer.

She suffered much pain during her illness but bore it all patiently.

Her desire was to go home. She was much concerned about her soul, was constantly striving to prepare herself, and the bright testimony she left gives us the assurance that she was ready to go.

The last clear words she said were "Vas Gott tuht das ist wohl getan".

She is very much missed, but what is the earthly loss is her gain.

Her favourite chapters were John 11 and 14 and she often asked us to read them.

She was a member of the Old Order Mennonites till her death.

The services at the home and meeting house were conducted by Daniel Brubacher, Daniel Martin, and Abraham Bearinger.

    JOHN H. WESTFALL

John H. Westfall, 63, victim of accident on Monday Evening

A collision in which a car was crushed between two transport trucks at 6: 00 o'clock Monday evening at the main intersection of Petersburg, on Nos. 7 and 8 Highway resulted in the death of John Henry Westfall, 63, of Petersburg, driver of the car. The truck drivers were uninjured. Mr. Westfall is said to have driven his car, an old, light model, out onto the highway directly in the path of a W&G Hutton trailer transport driven by Hugh Munro, Uniondale, with a 10-ton load of grain in the trailer. The truck was driving west. The impact drove the car into a truck owned by E. Meyers, Shakespeare, which was parked at the side of the road about 100 feet from the intersection, and then thre both the car and the parked truck about 15 feet off the road. Mr. Meyer's was across the road at the time of the accident. The first transport landed on top of the car and smashed it into the ground.

Mr. Westfall was taken from the car in an unconscious condition and died an hour later at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital. The car was completely wrecked and extensive damage was done to the truck driven by Mr. Munro. The other vehicle was driven out of the field under its own power with only superficial damage. Mr. Munro said that he had no idea what had happened. He stated that he was driving along with a clear road in front of him until suddenly the small car appeared directly in his path. The next thing I knew," he said. "There was a crash and I found myself in the ditch on top of the car, with the other truck a few feet in front." William Kelly, St. Marys, who was in the truck with Munro, bore out that statement.

Mr. Westfall is survived by his wife, Anna,; one son, Emerson, Merryhill; one daughter, Mr. H Demmerling, Waterloo; and a step-daughter, Mrs. R. Mousso, St. Catharines. He was born in Woolwich township and moved to the Petersburg district eight years ago.

LIFETIMES: From Old Order Mennonite to nursing instructor, Cindy Bolger broke a lot of moulds
Lucinda (Cindy) Bolger of Waterloo, born: Sept. 25, 1921, in Yatton, Ont., died: Dec. 6, 2017, of age-related illness

Cindy Martin was only 12 years old when she left home to work as a mother's helper, where the jobs usually entailed assisting a pregnant mother around the time of birth. These were all temporary positions and it would soon be time to move on, a total of 40 different households before something stirred in Cindy, something that made her decide to make more of her life.

Born the eldest of six into an Old Order Mennonite family in Yatton, in rural Waterloo near Elmira, expectations for the child were limited by her upbringing.

Cindy wrote in her memoir how her parents thought she might possibly complete Grade 8 but they knew with certainly she would end up being a "submissive wife" with a whole passel of kids.

Cindy had seen her fair share of Mennonite women on the farm, working hard, raising families. She was having none of it and surprisingly, her parents supported their head strong, determined daughter. Cindy would eventually become a nurse and nursing instructor as well as a bit of a mother hen to dozens of student nurses at what was then called Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital School of Nursing.

Cindy's rise to this position came after years of struggle.

In his eulogy, oldest son Jim Bolger recalled how his mother's early days were shadowed by extreme poverty.

"Many would describe her family as 'poor Nelson Martin's family' often dependent on others for food and money," he said.....

    Woolner, Elvina - July 15, 1925 - January 16, 2021

Elvina Woolner (nee Martin) completed her earthly journey after a short battle with COVID-19 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her husband Leonard, son Jerry, and siblings Cindy, Urias, Maryann, Nelson, and Abner. She will be deeply missed by her three daughters Sharon (Larry), Marlene (Dave), and Gloria (Steve); 7 grandchildren Laura, Kathryn, Jackie, Joanna, Adam, Jessica, and Becky; and 12 great-grandchildren Caleb, Brenna, Halle, Clayton, Yuna, Elora, Ara, Isaiah, Jia, Jadon, Alex, and Jessica's soon-to-be born baby. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Vera and Ann, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Elvina cherished her relationships with her many dear friends and neighbours who appreciated her spirited wit, caring heart, generous hospitality, and memorable meals. Many hours were spent reminiscing about life on the farm and sharing her joy of gardening. Elvina was an avid scrabble player and jumble scrambler and was rarely seen without a book in her hand. Every evening at 7:30 you could find her watching Jeopardy. She enjoyed music and singing and always loved when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren sang her favourite songs like Suppertime, I Come to the Garden Alone, and Sleep My Child. Elvina was an active member at First Mennonite Church in Kitchener and later attended Bethany Community Church in St. Catharines. Her enduring faith in God sustained her through challenging times. She leaves a legacy of faith for us to carry on.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the staff at Tabor Manor in St. Catharines who loved and cared for Elvina. Thank you for your exceptional care, compassion, and expert knowledge.

Memorial celebrations will be held in the future when family and friends can gather. Donations in Elvina's memory can be made to a charity of your choice. Your memories of Elvina and expressions of condolence can be sent to: elvina.woolner@gmail.com

    Notes:

WILKIE, Dennis One of the hardest things in life is writing an obituary for someone you really loved. Dennis passed away at Missinaibi Provincial Park on Saturday, August 13, 2016, doing what he loved. Camping, fishing (of which he had one of the best days ever), campfires, fish fries and of course the odd beverage. We will all miss him; his wife Barb (hard to get good help nowadays) and best friend; his son Darren and his wife Karen and his daughter Paula, and of course his two favourite grandchildren, Ethan who was his fishing buddy and apprentice at Missinaibi, and Cailyn, his crib partner - yes he did let her win some games. Dennis will leave a void in everyone's lives. He always had a good story or a good joke to tell. He is survived by his brother Larry (Rose) and family, his sisters-in-law Jan McNeil (Gary) and family, Deb Prout (Bruce) and family, Jean Horst (Steve) and family, and brother-in-law Dave Horst (Joan) and family. Dennis was predeceased by his parents Abraim and Anne Wilkie, sister Darlene, father-in-law and mother-in-law Earl and Mildred Horst, and brother-in-law Jim Horst. Dennis will be missed by his fishing buddies at Missinaibi Provincial Park - George, Tim, Dave (Watty), Bruce and Ross, and by his Cape Breton hunting buddies Earl, Gerd and Bill. Oh how we will miss the funny stories and "happenings" that occurred during these times; life will never be the same. Dennis was a big Toronto Blue Jay fan, and never missed a game (on the radio of course). His armchair coaching will really be missed. Thank you to Ethan for being there with me, also Deb, Bruce, Logan, Devon and Kiera, without you it would have been a tougher time. Thank you to Logan and Kiera for performing CPR on Uncle Dennis, I know it was rough on both of you, but he would have been happy knowing you were there for him. To Wayne and Carol, Robert and Sue, Tina and Phil, Remy and Lorraine, your friendship and help meant more than you can know. Also to the park staff, Tony and Jeff, and the two OPP officers that stayed until the end, Constable Arsenault and Constable Lane, you guys were amazing. Thank you too to Ingo for being there. A big thank you to Darren, Karen and Paula, Ethan and Cailyn, without family it would have been even harder. There will be a "happy time" held for Dennis at the Elmira Legion, 11 First St. E., Elmira, on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 4 to 9 p.m. Wear your best camp or fishing clothes in Dennis's honour, bring along your funny stories and remembrances. Dennis was the previous owner of Overland Plumbing & Heating Inc. for 25 years, and D.D.W. Plumbing & Heating Inc., with his son Darren for 15 years. As expressions of sympathy, donations to a fund for Missinaibi Provincial Park, Chapleau, Ontario, Dennis's favourite spot in the entire world, would be appreciated and may be arranged by calling Dreisinger Funeral Home , 519-669-2207. Cremation has taken place. Hopefully the fishing will be good in the next place on your journey. We will miss all the funny stories. Online condolences may be made at www.dreisingerfuneralhome.com
