KILLED ON A HAND CAR.

Sad Death of Mr. Robert Fair Near Crystal City, Man.

CRYSTAL CITY, Dec. 19. - On Saturday night an accident occurred about two miles east of here, which resulted in the death of Robert Fair, late of Ayr, Ont. He, with four others, had gone to Pilot Mound on a hand car to transact some business, and when returning, while jumping on the rear end of the car, deceased slipped and fell under the handle of the car, the iron lever of which struck deceased over the left temple, inflicting a terrible gash, which resulted in instantaneous death. Yesterday an inquest was held at Messrs, Greenway & Richard's undertaking establishment by Coroner Riddell, assisted by the following jury: H. J. Taylor (foreman), John Greenway, J. F. Hunter, J. G. Steacy, W. H. Greenway, Samuel Treble, J. E. Parr, Samuel Hicks, J. F. Greenway, Robert Rollins, W. S. Mark, E. G. Taylor, D. W. Duff and James MacNamee. Constable Sands was also in attendance. After receiving the evidence of the various witnesses the jury retired, and after an hour and a half of deliberation brought in a an unanimous verdict of accidental death. After consulting with friends of deceased in Ayr, be the body was sent east this morning in the charge of Jas. Bell. Deceased has been residing in Souris, Man., for about two years, and arrived here on Friday's train on a visit to friends.

Fair - Native of This Village Passes At Strathclair, Manitoba - The death occurred suddenly at his home at Strathclair, Man., on Friday of Duncan McRuer Fair, a former resident of this village. Mr. Fair was born in Ayr and lived here until some 20 years ago when he went west. He will be well remembered by many of the older residents of the community by whom he was held in high esteem. Deceased visited here some 5 or 6 years ago and always had a warm spot in his heart for his native village. He was a member of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Jessie Malone, he is survived by the following three brothers: Jas. G., Ayr; William, Detroit, and John, Vancouver.

Passing of James G. Fair Mourned by Community - With the sudden passing of James Gladstone Fair, early Monday morning, this village lost one of its most prominent and valued native sons. He had been in ill health for several years but his passing was entirely unexpected. Born in Ayr, a son of William Fair, and Jane Gladstone, he received his education here and as a young man, after learning his trade in Brantford, opened a watch repairing shop in the Masonic Building.

Conducted Business For 56 Years

After a period of one year, he moved to the stand on Stanley Street now conducted by Kenneth A. Lingelbach, where he ran a jewelry store and watch repairing business for a period of 55 years, retiring in October, 1946. He held the distinction of having been a member of the business community for a longer term than that of any other person in the history of the village.

Prominent In Civic Affairs

During his lifetime, Mr. Fair took an active and prominent part in furthering the different civic enterprises, as they were brought forward, for the improvement of the village. IN this connection, his good judgment and considered opinion were always sought after. He was connecter with practically every organization and movement which functioned here during the period of his lifetime. These included the Ayr Masonic Lodge, Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., Ayr, Horticultural Society, Ayr Bowling Club, Ayr Curling Club, the former Ayr Horse Show, the Ayr Rural Telephone Co., Ayr School Board, the Ayr Park committee, Centennial of 1924, activities of the different committees functioning during the two world wars, Ayr War Memorial Committee which planned the erection of the imposing Cenotaph, corner of Stanley and Northumberland Streets, Ayr Hockey Club, Ayr Cemetery Board, Ayr Council Ayr Library Board and other Organizations. It might be mentioned in particular that he was secretary of the Ayr rural Telephone Company during its entire existence with the exception of one year. This company was just recently taken over by the Bell Telephone Company.

The Carnegie Library

His services as a member of the library beard were also outstanding. With the exception of the year 1906, when he was a member of the Ayr Municipal Council, he was a valued member of the Ayr Library Board from 1901 to 1942, being appointed secretary-treasurer in 1903. As secretary-treasurer of the board, he made application on October 18, 1909, for the Carnegie grant to provide for the erection of a new library in Ayr. This grant was received on December 24, 1909, and the present fine structure was subsequently built. As a matter of fact, Mr. Fair could be counted upon to take a leading part in every effort which was made towards bettering the living cultural conditions in his native village. Of a kindly and considerate disposition, he was always willing to lend a helping hand, and his friends throughout the district were legion.

Noted For Integrity

During the lengthy period in which he conducted a jewelry business here, Mr. Fair enjoyed a high reputation for his integrity and dependability. Surviving are his wife, the former Jamesena McRuer; a daughter, Miss Jane, and a brother, John. The funeral, which was private, took place from his late residence this (Wednesday) afternoon to the Ayr Cemetery.

Miss Fair's Demise - the passing at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, July 26, of Emily N. Fair, though not unexpected, cast a deep shadow over the community. The deceased was an only daughter of the late William Fair and was a native of the village, her birth dating back a little over a quarter of a century. Though the picture of health and of a most cheerful, kindly disposition, she was the victim of a spinal trouble that finally developed tuberculosis. For the past few years she filled a responsible position in Toronto but came home ill about the first of the present year. Although given the best of medical treatment, her condition gradually grew worse until death supervened. To complicate matters, her mother has also been quite ill and is still in a precarious state. Four brothers also survive, viz., William, Detroit, Duncan and John, Strathclair, Man., and James G., Ayr. The funeral on Sunday was very largely attended, the services being conducted by Rev. John Thomson, pastor of Knox church, assisted by Rev. D. I. Ellison and Rev. John McRae, interment being made in Ayr cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. A. E. Watson, John Wyllie, Jas. Henderson, W. L. Anderson (Galt), Robert Anderson and Jas. Swan. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, indicating the loving esteem in which the deceased was held by a large circle of friends and associates. The News expresses the feeling of the community in Extending to the family the most sincere sympathy in this their hour of trial and sole bereavement.

Death of Mary Ellen Whitson - The sudden death occurred at her home here on Sunday evening at 7.15 o'clock of Mary Ellen Whitson, in her 66th year. Miss Whitson had prepared and eaten supper with her brother, Edward, when she was seized with a stroke about 6.30 o'clock, from which death resulted within the hour. Deceased had been in poor health for several months during the past winter, but her condition had shown much improvement in recent months. Born in Greenfield, deceased had lived the whole of her lifetime in this community, with the exception of three years in Vancouver and two years in Hamilton. She was the second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Whitson, one of the early families of the village, and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, who will regret to learn of her demise. Miss Whitson attended Knox United Church, and she is survived by two sisters and one brother, viz.: Mrs. John Melvin, Galt; Mrs. J. C. Kyle and Edward Whitson, Ayr. Two nieces and a nephew also survive. There was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place on Tuesday afternoon to Ayr Cemetery. Rev. J. W. Currie was in charge of the services, and the pallbearers were: Wm. Manson, A. G. Watson, G. S. Dalrymple, W. E. Gammon, J. W. Currie and Thomas Easton.

James Edward Whitson Dies

Following a protracted period of ill health, James Edward Whitson, a lifelong resident of this village, was removed by death at his home on Stanley Street on Sunday evening. He was in his 75^th year.

The late Mr. Whitson was born in Ayr in the house now occupied by Harold Charles, St. Andrews Avenue, a son of Thomas Whitson and Elizabeth Gladstone. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Whitson was employed in the carpenter shop of the John Watson Mfg. Co. Ltd., for nearly half a century - many years as foreman - before retiring in 1947.

He was an enthusiastic supporter of sports in Ayr, and was an active member of the Ayr Curling Club for many years. In recognition of his lengthy membership, he was made a life member of the club. In later years, Mr. Whitson was a regular attendant at softball games in Victoria Park during the summer months.

By faith, Mr. Whitson was an adherent of the Presbyterian Church. He was a long-term member of both the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges.

Surviving, besides his wife, the former Betsy Belle Wilson, is one sister, Mrs. John C. Kyle (Florence) of Ayr.

The funeral took place from his late residence, Stanley Street, this (Wednesday) afternoon, with interment in Ayr Cemetery. Rev. W. J. McKeown conducted the last rites.

Masonic Service

A Masonic service was conducted at the residence on Tuesday evening under the direction of Wor. Bro. R. L. Anderson, with a large body of members of Ayr lodge in attendance.

Members of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., also attended in a body to pay last respects to a former valued member.

Robert Gladstone

A lifelong Ayr resident, Robert Gladstone, passed away at Stirling Retirement Home, Ayr, on Tuesday. September 23rd, 1980. He was in his 83rd year

A son of the late William Gladstone and Isabella Reid, he was born on the Gladstone farm, Nithvale Road. Ayr. He farmed the home farm, later retiring to Piper Street, Ayr.

Mr. Gladstone was a 60 year member of Dolman Lodge I.O.O.F., Ayr, and a member of Knox United Church, Ayr.

Predeceased by his wife, the former Elspeth Marshall in 1976, and a daughter Marian. Surviving are a son William and a daughter Mrs. Milton (Margaret Elspeth) Thomas, both of Ayr, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Resting at the William Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, where service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. D. E. Willis of Ayr will officiate. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

David Cullen Kyle of 515 Fangs Drive, Preston. passed away at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, on Monday. February 17th. He was 76. Born in Ayr on August 7, 1915, he was a son of the late John C. Kyle and Florence Whitson. Mr. Kyle received his education in Ayr. worked at the John Watson factory as a painter, and was a fine softball player with the old Ayr Vics teams. Mr. Kyle served with the army during World War II. Upon his return he moved to Preston and was self employeed as an egg and poultry dealer. He retired eleven years ago. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church. Preston: member of the I 0.0.F. Lodge in Ayr. and later transferred to Cambridge No 188 when Ayr Lodge closed: was very active in events at Fairview Mennonite Centre. Preston. Surviving are his wile, the former Elizabeth Frosch: a daughter Mrs. Ed (Nancy) Laverty of Peterborough: grandsons Justin and Kyle. an a sister Betty Kyle Resting at the Barthel Funeral Home Preston today (Wed ) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m . KYLE, Elizabeth Gladstone (Betty) - Of Cambridge, on Sunday, August 27, 2006, at MacMaster Hospital Hamilton, in her 86th year. Beloved daughter of the late John and Florence (Whitson) Kyle. Loving sister of the late David and Elizabeth Kyle. Also survived by her niece, Nancy and Ed Laverty and their family Justin (Lindsay) and Kyle (Jenni). Miss Kyle was born in Ayr and had been a lifelong resident of the area. She was a retired nurse and very active in the Fairview Centre Community. Known as a generous, caring person who didn't hesitate to give her opinion of things, she also enjoyed knitting, the craft Sale and outings with her friends. She was always on the go. Friends will be received at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Rd., Cambridge, Thursday 7-8: 30 p.m. The Funeral and Committal Service will be conducted at Fairview Centre Auditorium, 515 Langs Dr., Cambridge, Friday. Victim of Infantile Paralysis
Marion Gladstone Succumbs on Thursday to Dread Childhood Disease - The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gladstone in the loss of their eldest daughter, Marion, aged 11 years, whose death occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning from that dread scourge of childhood, infantile paralysis. She had been slightly unwell only a few days and her illness had been diagnosed as the dread paralysis only the day previous, when the doctor had been called. A supply of serum was immediately rushed from Toronto and administered to the small patient, but without avail.

Marion was a great favorite with her playmates of the Ayr Public School, where she had recently been successful in passing her examinations from the junior third class to the senior third. She also attended the Sabbath School of Knox United Church. Besides her sorrowing parents, she is survived by a younger brother, Billy, and a small sister, Elspeth. The funeral was held privately on Thursday afternoon to Ayr Cemetery.

William (Bill) Gladstone

Lifelong Ayr resident, William Marshall Gladstone, died peacefully surrounded by his family, at his home on Piper Street on Sunday, May 21st, 2000. He was in his 76th year. The son of the late Elspeth Marshall and Robert Gladstone, Bill was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 126, Preston, a member of the Ayr Fire Department for 47 years, a 32-year member of the O.P.P. Auxiliary, a member of the I.O.O.F. No. 307 Princeton Lodge and a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Bill be remembered for his love of sports both as a participant and supporter of the Ayr Vets, Ayr Rockets, Ayr Centennials and Ayr Curling Club, along with coaching many minor hockey teams. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling with his many friends and will be remembered for his morning card games at the fire hall. Predeceased by his wife, the late Irene Vander in 1988 and sisters Marian Gladstone and Elspeth Thomas. Survived by two sons, James and Sharon, Steve and Carol, all of Ayr; daughter Susan and John Drummond of Breslau; and by three grandchildren Brian and Janet Gladstone and Jessica Drummond. Funeral service will be held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home today (Thursday, May 25th) at 3 p.m. Rev. Fred Hagle of Knox United Church will officiate. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Ayr resident Margaret Elspeth Thomas died at St. Mary's General Hospital on Friday, October 27, 1995. Mrs. Thomas was in her 69th year. Born in North Dumfries Township she was predeceased by her parents Robert Gladstone and Ella Marshall and by her sister Marion. She is survived by her best friend and husband Milton Thomas, her children Bonnie and her husband George Bell of Woodstock, Bob at home, Paul and his wife Arlene, Gail and her husband Frans Michiels, Diana and her husband Larry Struthers and Ted and his wife Cathy, all of Ayr. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Terri and her husband Kevin, Mark, Rebecca, David, Jordan, Ruth, Ben, Renee, Jo-Anne, Jennifer, Susie, Jonathan, Kristin and Karly. Also survived by her brother William Gladstone of Ayr, two special brothers-in-law, Russell of Ayr and Walter of Kitchener and by many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place.
