    Mrs. William Berner

    Death removed a respected citizen, of Kitchener on Sunday morning in the person of Leah Zimmerman, widow of the late Rev. U. Berner. which occurred at the home on East Weber St. Deceased, who had been in failing health for the past five months, was born at Bamberg, Ont. In 1897 her husband died at Elmwood, where he was pastor of the Lutheran church.

    The funeral of the late Mrs. Berner took place on Wednesday afternoon to St. Matthew's Lutheran church and Mount Hope cemetery for service and interment. Two sons and seven daughters survive, namely: Emmanuel, Mrs. Alfred Heller, Mrs. Roy Kleinschmidt, Mrs. Herbert Hollinger, all of Kitchener. Mrs. William Paschke of Buffalo, N.Y.; Mrs. H. M. Sammetinger of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Rev. Theo of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; Bertha and Clara at home. There are also two step-daughters, Mrs. Fred Henning and Mrs. Martha Henning of Orchard Park, N.Y., Besides her children she is survived by the following sisters and brothers, Mrs. Joseph Grosa of Waterloo, Mrs. Dan Knapp, Mrs. Rose Wunnenberg and David Zimmerman, all of Hanover, and Theo. of San Pedro, Calif. One sister, Mrs. G. Berner, of Toronto, passed away three weeks ago.

    The Rev. Theophilus Berner

    In June of 1907 the church board petitioned the Buffalo Synod President, John N. Grabau, to supply a pastor with the necessary qualifications. The Synod President sent the Rev. Theophilus Berner as a candidate. He had recently graduated from the Buffalo Seminary in December, 1906 and was fluent in both the German and English languages. He had served as a Parochial School teacher from January to June of 1907. On June 16, 1907 he preached his first sermon in St. Martini Lutheran Church. At the time the church had 88 members.

Predeceased by two brothers, Wilfred and Erhardt (Ott). Visitation at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, 51 Benton Si, Kitchener. Funeral and committal services will be held from the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m., Rev. Andrew Paulsen officiating. Interment to follow in Woodland cemetery.

    Wilf Heller dies; former sportsman

    Clarence (Wilf) Heller of 126 Third Ave., former Kitchener jeweller and sportsman, died Saturday, at St. Mary's Hospital, suddenly of a heart attack. He was 64. Born in Kitchener, he was a son of Mrs. Rosa Heller and the late Alfred Heller. He owned and operated Heller Jewelry Store, until his retirement, 10 years ago. As a young man he played hockey, with the Kitchener Greenshirts and then as a professional, with the Newark, Montreal Canadiens and Syracuse, teams. An eye injury ended his hockey career. He also coached the K-W Dutchmen, for a short period. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, the K-W Press Club and was a past president of Rockway Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, the former Florence Saunders; one son, Jon of Kitchener; one daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Nan) Fischer of Kitchener; one brother, Erhard (Ott) of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Lillian) McCormick of Elmira and Mrs. Edgar (Mildred) Gimble of Kitchener; and five grandchildren. The body will be at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home, until noon on Tuesday, when removal will be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, for service, at 2 p.m. Rev. Theodore Schaffer will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.
