    LORNE L. ROTH

    Lorne L. Roth of New Hamburg died suddenly at his home Tuesday May 11. He was 59.

    Born May 7, 1912 in New Hamburg, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin S. Roth and had lived in New Hamburg most of his life. He was a member of the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Irene Gascho; two sons, Franklin, R.R. 3 Kippen, and James, at home; four daughters, Mary, at home, Mrs. Ned (Marcella) Graber of Red Lake, Mrs. Paul (Fern) Huber, R.R. 1 Wellesley, and Mrs. Marvin (Esther) Good, R.R. 2 New Hamburg; two brothers, John of Baden, and Alvin, R.R. 2 New Hamburg; one sister, Mrs. Milton (Mabel) Litwiller, Tavistock and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

    The body rested at the Omand Funeral Home until removal was made to the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church where Rev. Moses Baer conducted a service at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.

    BELK, Mary Barbara Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, April 29, 2016 at her residence, The Maples Home for Seniors, Tavistock. Mary was born 80 years ago in Wilmot Township and was the daughter of the late Lorne and Irene (Gascho) Roth. Mary will be missed by her step-children Gail Belk and Steve and his wife Beverly Belk all of New Hamburg. She will also be missed by her step-grandchildren Philip and James Belk. Dear sister of Marcella and husband Ned Graber of Red Lake, Fern and husband Paul Huber of Wellesley, Franklin and wife Mabel Roth of Nithburg, Esther and husband Marvin Good of R.R.#1 Milverton and James and wife Lorna Roth of Tara. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Mary is predeceased by her first husband Don Nichols (1984) and second husband Kenneth W. Belk (1998). Mary was a member of Grace Mennonite Church. Mary was quite active in Children Ministries in the New Hamburg area for many years. Friends and relatives are invited to visitation at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home , 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg today, Monday, May 2, 2016 from 1 - 4 and 6 - 9 p.m. At noon Tuesday, May 3, 2016 transfer will be made to Steinmann Mennonite Church, Baden where the service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Earl Koch and Howard Bean officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or Christian Aid Ministries by contacting the funeral home. Bev (Roth) Martin of RR 2, Drayton. Family members left to carry on her legacy of commitment to God include her children Todd, Chenia, Raquel, and Lysanna all at home. Precious daughter of Jim and Lorna Roth of Tara and daughter-in-law of Orleon and Eileen Martin of RR 2, Drayton. Sister of Jeffrey (Kim) and Krista of Tara and Anthony (Tabitha) of Owen Sound, and sister-in-law of Gary and Sue Martin, Chris and Ruben Guevara, Dave and Nichole Martin, Steve and Katrina Martin, Connie and Luke Erb, Victor and Sheri Martin, and Tim Martin (Sarah). Bev is lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her sister Debra, her brother Craig and her brother-in-law Kirby.     Funeral Home, Elmira on Thursday evening, September 8th from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, September 9th from 2-9 p.m. A family interment will take place at Drayton Cemetery on Saturday, September 10th at 1 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Bev's life and faith will be held at Countryside Mennonite Fellowship, 3745 Herrgott Road, Hawkesville on Saturday, September 10th at 3 p.m. In Bev's memory, donations to Voice of the Martyr's would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

    Upset judge won't grant guilty plea in fatal 2011 Wellesley crash

    The trial for a fatal car crash is in flux after an agreement to give the accused drunk driver 27 months in jail was squashed by an angry judge on Monday.
    Both the prosecution and defence lawyers are regrouping after Justice Peter Hambly blasted their proposed plea deal and would not let them move it to a new judge.

    "In my view, the proposal in this case would bring the administration of justice into disrepute and is contrary to the public interest," said Hambly.
    "It does not address the seriousness of what happened resulting in the death of an 11-year-old boy and it does not protect the public by sufficiently deterring others and condemning impaired driving."

    Jeremy Glenfield, 36, of New Hamburg faced three charges in a criminal trial that started in September. His Jeep went through the Gerber Road stop sign and collided with the Huber family's van at the Nafziger Road intersection. The crash fatally injured 11-year-old Jeremy Huber, who was taken off life support two days later on Christmas Eve 2011....
