    Mrs. John Love

    The death occurred in Galt Hospital early Tuesday morning of Mrs. John Love, in her '75th year, following an illness of some duration. Mrs. Love, whose maiden name was Charlotte Hawes, was born in Cambridge, England, a daughter of the late Mary Ann Howlett and Robert Hawes, and came to Canada with her parents at the age of some four years. The family settled at Haysville, where she spent her girlhood years.

    Following her marriage, to John Love 49 years ago, they lived at Haysville and Doon for some six years prior to coming to Ayr in 1903. Although her home and family were the centre of her existence, Mrs. Love made many warm friends during her long residence. in Ayr, and she will be missed by many. She was a member of the Anglican Church.

    Besides her husband, she is survived by one son and seven daughters, as follows: Archie Love, St. Catharines; Mrs. Wesley P. Ennis (Pearl), Elora; Mrs. Walter Goodfellow (Agnes), Woodstock; Mrs. Russell Hutchison (Mary), Sarnia; Mrs. Robert Jones (Beatrice), Toronto; Mrs. Allan Teather (Vera), Galt; Mrs. Frank Sanders (Dorothy), Brantford, and Mrs. Bert Weller (Frances), Ayr. Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters, viz.: William Hawes, Paris; Robert G. Hawes, Ayr; Mrs. Alice Hayes, Oak River, Man.; Mrs. Beatrice Merner, Kitchener, and Mrs. Eva Turnbull, Ayr.

    The funeral will take place on Thursday, with private service at the family residence, Water street, at 2.00 p.m., followed by a public service in Christ Church at 2.30 p.m. Interment will be made in the Ayr Cemetery.

    William Hawes Passes

    The death occurred in Willett Hospital, Paris, on Saturday of William H. Hawes, a former resident of this village, in his 73rd year. He had been in indifferent health for quite a number of years. It was the second death in the family within as many days, his sister, Mrs. Beatrice Merner, Kitchener, having passed away on Friday.

    The late Mr. Hawes was born near Haysville, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hawes. He married Margaret Spreeman of New Dundee and, shortly after the run of the century, they moved, along with his parents and other members of the family, to the farm west of Ayr now owned by John Welsh (formerly Norman Morton).

    He farmed here with his father for a number of years and later, some 37 years ago, purchased the former livery stable on Northumberland street from J. W. Henderson and John Wyllie. Mr. Hawes conducted a successful livery and teaming business here for several years before disposing of it following the first World War. However, he retained the job of transporting the mail from the C.P.R. depot to the Post Office until the family's removal to Paris almost 20 years ago, where Mr. Hawes secured employment with Penmans Limited.

    It was during the period when Mr. Hawes operated the livery business that he made many warm friends among what are now the older residents of the village. Besides gaining a reputation for renting horses of the highest caliber at reasonable prices, his jovial, good-natured mien made him one of the village's most popular business men. He took a keen interest in sports and members of former Ayr hockey teams can well remember riding with Mr. Hawes to Drumbo and other towns for games, where Mr. Hawes was one of the team's most ardent supporters.

    Surviving are three daughters and one son, as follows: Mrs. G. R. Gillingwater (Vera) of Brantford, and Gladys, Irene and Roy, all of Paris; two sisters: Mrs. Alice Hayes of Oak River, Man., and Mrs. Eva Turnbull, Ayr, and one brother, Robert Hawes, also of Ayr. One son, Percy, predeceased him in 1918, a victim of the influenza epidemic.

    The Funeral

    The funeral took place Monday afternoon from the McCammon Funeral Home, Paris, to Ayr Cemetery. Rev. H. K. L. Charlton, rector of St. James' Anglican Church, conducted the services. A large number of relatives and friends from Paris, Ayr and district were present to pay their last respects. The pallbearers were: T. King, K. Reid, K. Atfield, C. McHutchion, E. Spencer and W. Rose, all of Paris.

    Mrs. Charles Holdaway - The death occurred suddenly on Monday night at 11 o'clock of Ellen Emily Hawes, beloved wife of Charles Holdaway, Stanley Street, from the effects of a heart attack. Deceased, who was in her 46th year, had been ill for some considerable length of time, but no immediate serious outcome was anticipated. She was born at Haysville, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hawes. The family later removed to the farm now occupied by Norman Morton, subsequently coming to Ayr about 25 Years ago. Deceased was a member of the former Methodist Church, and was highly esteemed by many friends. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son and three daughters, viz.: Edward of Galt, Mrs. Thomas Holmes, Adelean and Florence of Ayr. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Ellery, Kitchener; William, Paris; Robert, Mrs. John Love and Mrs. Wm. J.     Death of Robert G. Hawes

    Robert G. Hawes, a long-time resident of Ayr, passed away at K-W Hospital on Friday, a short time after suffering a heart attack at his home here. Mr. Hawes, who was in his 66th year, had been in poor health for some time and was confined to hospital on several occasions. Born in Haysville in 1893, he was a son of the late Robert Hawes and Mary Howlett. He came to Ayr with the family in 1904 and had resided here since. During World War I he enlisted with the 111th Battalion and saw service overseas. Mr. Hawes was a member of Knox United Church.

    His wife, the former Florence Chesney, passed away January 17, 1957. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald Ramsay (Jean) of Preston; a sister, Mrs. William (Eva) Turnbull, Ayr, and three grandchildren.

    Funeral service was conducted at the W.R. Coutts Funeral Home, Galt, on Monday by Rev. W.J.V. Buchanan. Interment was made at Ayr Cemetery chapel. The pallbearers were members of the Canadian Legion; Clifford Challenger, Jack George, Jack Swan, Arthur Barber, George Merchant and Harold Mann.

    Arthur W. Hawes Passes

    A lifelong Ayr resident, Arthur W. Hawes, passed away early this (Wednesday) morning in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. Born in Ayr, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ellery Hawes, he was in his 70th year. He had been employed by the former Reid Lumber and Coal Co. in Ayr for many years until his retirement some years ago due to ill health. For the past two years he had been employed by the John Watson Mfg. Co. Mr. Hawes was a member of Knox United Church as well as Dolman Lodge, No. 174, I.O.O.F. His wife, the former Myrtle Sterling, survives. Also surviving are one son; Harold of Galt; two daughters, Mrs. William (Shirley) Garraway, Preston, and Mrs. David (Marjorie) Kerr, Ayr; two brothers, Melvin, Bright, and Edward, Port Credit; three sisters, Mrs. Emery (Isabel) Radke, New Dundee; Mrs. Wilbur (Alice) Ott, Kitchener, and Hilda, New York State. Also surviving are six grandchildren. Friends will be received at Little's Funeral Home, 39 Grand Ave. North, Galt, where funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. D. E.     Popular Ayr Citizen, Ephraim Hawes Dies

    The community was saddened by the death early Saturday morning of one of its most popular residents, Ephraim Hawes, in his 65th year. Although Mr. Hawes had been in indifferent health for the past couple of years, due to a heart ailment, his passing was unexpected. He had gone to work as usual on Friday but returned home, complaining of feeling unwell. During the early hours of Saturday morning he succumbed to a heart attack. Born at Roseville, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ellery Hawes. While a child he moved with the family to Ayr, where his father operated a milk delivery route for some years. As a youth in his early teens, Mr. Hawes secured employment with the Reid lumber firm and for a half century, until the day of his passing, was a faithful and valued member of the staff. Mr. Hawes worked with two generations of this lumbering family, commencing with the late John Q. Reid, and latterly with the present owner, J. Howard Reid. His term of service was broken only by the outbreak of World War 1, when he enlisted with the 111th (South Waterloo) Battalion. While overseas Mr. Hawes rose to the rank of sergeant. Mr. Hawes was a member of Dolman Lodge, IOOF; Canadian Order of Foresters, the Ayr Legion and 111th Battalion Association. He served a term on Ayr Council. Mr. Hawes was an adherent of Knox United Church. Always interested in local sports,

    Mr. Hawes was an enthusiastic follower of Ayr hockey and softball teams. In earlier years he was frequently among the supporters who followed the clubs on road trips during playoff series, A man of even temperament and sound judgement, Mr. Hawes will be missed by a wide circle of friends in the district's social and business life. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Eva Walton, are two daughters, Mrs. Helen Altamore, at home, and Mrs. James Mast (Doreen) of Ayr; three sons, Lloyd and Floyd, of Galt, and Gerald, at home; five sisters, Mrs. Emory Radke, New Dundee; Mrs. Emil Fritz, Mrs. Ellis Ott and Mrs. Clarence Gress, all of Kitchener, and Mrs. Hilda Bowley, U.S.A.; and three brothers, Melvin of Bright, Edward of Toronto and Arthur of Ayr. Seven grandchildren also survive.

    The Funeral

    The funeral was held Monday from his late residence, Colquhoun street, the service being conducted by Rev. R. D. Thompson. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. The pallbearers were three members of his company in the 111th Bt'n, Harry Dakin, Robert Renwick and W. Porteous, of Galt, and three neighbours, James Burton, J. Howard Reid and Carl E. Buck. Members of the Ayr Legion and the 111th Bt'n Association formed a guard of honor for the cortege, and at the cemetery dropped the traditional poppies on the casket. On Sunday evening members of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., conduct-ed a service at the residence.

    Edward Hawes Passes

    Edward Hawes, a native of Ayr, passed away December 8th at the Mississauga Hospital. He was 83. Mr. Hawes was one of the last surviving members of the 111th Battalion of Galt which served overseas during World War I. Dearly beloved husband of Laverna Stirling; father of Jack, James and Donald; also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Predeceased by two sisters Mrs. Pearl Fritz and Mrs. Annie Gress; also three brother Eph, Arthur and Melvin. Funeral service was held at the Turner and Porter "Peel" Chapel on December 10th with interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    MRS. THOMAS C. STANLEY

    Following an illness of three months, Mrs. Thomas C. Stanley, 41, died at her residence, 20 Hett street, Kitchener, on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

    The former Bessie Turnbull, Mrs. Stanley was a daughter of Mrs. Eva Turnbull. Ayr, and the late Wil!iam J. Turnbull, and was born in South Dumfries township, Sept. 4, 1904. She was a member of St. John's Anglican Church and Women's Auxiliary. Her marriage to Thomas C. Stanley, who survives, took place in Kitchener, May 24, 1923.

    Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, William T. and Watson N. and two daughters, Elizabeth and Mrs. Ray (Peggy) Gingrich, all of Kitchener. One brother, Leslie, of Ayr, and four sisters, Mrs. William McLeod and Mrs. Edward Bonham, both of Ayr, and Mrs. Fred Farrell and Mrs. Elliott Riddell, both of Galt, also survive.

    The funeral service was held at St. John's Anglican Church, Kitchener, on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. J. N. H. Mills in charge. Interment was made in the Ayr Cemetery.

    Long time Ayr resident Margaret Hagey died at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, December 13, 2000. Mrs. Hagey was in her 93rd year. Born in South Dumfries Township she was daughter of the late Eva Hawes and William Turnbull. Mrs. Hagey was a member of United Brethren in Christ, New Dundee. She owned and operated McLeod's Grocery, corner of Northumberland and Hall Streets, in Ayr for several years prior to retirement. She was a former member of the Ayr Lawn Bowling Club and Ayr Women's Institute. Predeceased by her Husbands William McLeod in 1955 and Edward Hagey in 1996. She is survived by her children, Margaret and Bruce Ford of Ayr, William (Bud) and Donna McLeod of Cambridge, Dorothy and Bill Mitchell of Ayr and Inez McLeod of Paris; by ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; and by her sisters Helen Riddell and Marion and Earl Prike, all of Cambridge. In addition to her parents and husbands she was predeceased by her son Jim and sisters Bessie Stanley, Jean Farrell and brother Leslie Turnbull. Funeral service was held at Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Saturday, December 16 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Lloyd Fretz officiated. Spring interment will be in Ayr Cemetery.

    Jean Isabell Crawley of London passed away at Parkwood Hospital, London, on Monday, May 31, 1993. She was in her 79th year. Mrs. Crawley was a daughter of the late William Turnbull and Eva Hawes. Predeceased by her first husband Fred Farrell and second husband Ernie Crawley. Loving mother of Raymond Farrell and his wife Anne, Patricia and her husband Terence Blake and Michael Farrell and his wife Laura. Dear grandmother of Richard, David, Lynda, Christopher and Robin; Theresa and Kelly; and Tony and Tara: and great-grandmother of Amanda and Nicole. Sister of Margaret Hagey, Helen Riddell, Marion Prike, the late Bessie Stanley and the late Les Turnbull. A public memorial service to celebrate the life of Jean will be held in the 5th floor chapel of Parkwood Hospital, London, on Sunday, June 27, 1993 at 2: 30 p.m.

    August 11, 1938 - February 27, 2017. With heavy hearts, the family of Gerry announce his passing on Monday, February 27, 2017, with loving family by his side at Meaford Hospital. Gerry was in his 79th year. Beloved husband of Barbara Dunn Hawes. Loving father of Kelly Riddell (John) of Cambridge, and Brad and Wade Hawes of Paris. Predeceased by his first wife Eleanor Campbell Hawes and grandson Blair Riddell. He will also be sadly missed by his stepchildren, Christopher Dunn (Ann), Colleen Dunn, Leanne Ament (Joe), and Trevor Dunn. Cherished grandpa of Stephen Riddell, Sarah, Reid, and Adam Hawes and step-grandchildren, Cassondra Wilson and Victoria Wilson, Spencer and Clinton Close, Zachary and Luka Ament. Gerry was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a proficient amateur ham radio operator. He had a special place in his heart for animals and especially his dog Jed. His big black lab was his devoted companion and buddy. Gerry's bravery, determination and strength carried him through some very challenging health issues, but he always had a smile. Our thanks to the incredible caring doctors and staff of the Grey Bruce Heath Services Meaford Site. A very special thanks to Dr. Nathalie Sauriol for her loving care. Gerry truly appreciated the special talents and thoughtfulness of each of you.     The family of James Thomas Turnbull announce his passing at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Thursday October 25, 2018, in his 82nd year.

    Jim lived in the village of Ayr all his life and had many friends and acquaintances. His favorite places where the local restaurants where he enjoyed the companionships of the patrons, discussing his favorite sports teams, the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs.

    He is survived by his sisters; Donna Turnbull, Joan (Joe) Marco, Marilyn Hartwick and Nancy Kazimierczak. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Douglas, William, and Brian.

    Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jim's Life will be held at the Kirkwood Apartments.

    Donations to the Charity of Choice would be appreciated.
