Levi L. Bechtel "son of George B., and Esther (Livergood) Bechtel, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, April 2, 1809. He came to Canada with Jacob S. Shoemaker in 1826. He was a miller by trade. In December, 1831, he was married to Magdalena, daughter of old Jacob and Mary (Erb) Schneider. She was born at Bloomingdale, Ontario, December 6th, 1806, and is the only one of her father's family of ten children, living, and one of the first white children born in this township. She is still enjoying the best of health and works around the house like a young woman. Her mind and memory are yet as strong as ever. When the write paid her a visit, November 20th, 1894, she gave him the names of all her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren, together with the dates of birth of each and dates of death of those who died; also gave him names of persons to whom each of her children and grand-children are married, and dates when such marriages took place. At present she has her home with her grand-daughter, Mrs. O. Wismer of Baden, Ontario. Soon after their marriage they moved on a farm two miles north of Bloomingdale, now in possession of John S. Bowman, where he died December 7th, 1868. Their family consisted of eight children"

John B. Histand

Shortly after returning home from Zion Evangelical church, about nine o'clock on Sunday evening, Mr. John B. Histand, a respected resident of this town, passed away, while seated on a chair. Death was due to heart failure and was shockingly sudden, as the deceased was apparently in the best of health during the day. The late Mr. Histand was in his 72nd year and has lived in Berlin for many years, residing on Spetz street. He is survived by his wife and son and daughter, John, who left for Star City, Saskatchewan, a few days ago and Mrs. John F. Mastern, of New Dundee. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, to the Zion Evangelical Church, for service and from thence to the East End cemetery, for interment.

Shantz. - Elizabeth Histand, wife of Menno Schantz, was born in Oxford Co., Ont., Oct. 6, 1846; passed to her reward at Waterloo, Ont., Jan. 3, 1923, aged 76 y. 2 m. 28 d. On Dec. 30, 1873, she was united in marriage to Menno Schantz, who predeceased her in 1911. To this union were born 4 children, 2, Harry and Catherine, having preceded their parents to the spirit world, and 2, Amanda and Ellen, with an aged sister, Mrs. M. Unger, Preston, Ont., remain to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother and sister. The funeral was held on Jan. 5, 1923, from her late residence and the Erb St. Mennonite Church. Interment in the Schantz cemetery, north of Baden. Services were conducted by S. Schrader and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Prov. 3: 6. Sister Schantz was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years and departed this life strong in the faith of her Master.

Bechtel.-Bro. Jacob S. Bechtel was born in Bloomingdale, Ont., July 2, 1914; aged 74 y. 4 m. 19 d. On Feb. 28, 1865, he was married to Salome (Roos) Devitt. This union was blessed with 8 children, 2 dying in infancy, leaving to mourn their loss a wife, 5 daughters, and 1 son. He had been ailing for about 2 years with cancer of the stomach. All his life was spent without God and no hope for the future until about 2 months before the death summons came he desired a minister to visit him, being deeply concerned about his soul's salvation. About two weeks later he sent for a bishop and wanted to be baptized and received into the church, which was done. He mourned his misspent life, but rejoiced in the saving power in the blood of Jesus. Funeral services were held July 4 at the home by Noah Hunsberger and at the Berlin Church by Jonas Snider in German, and by Pastor Burns of the Evangelical Church, Waterloo, in English.

Mrs. Ellen Rickert

Mrs. Ellen Rickert, 65 Church St., died Monday at Coutt's Pavilion, Freeport, after an illness of two years. She was 94.

A daughter of the late Moses and Magdalene Unger of Waterloo Township, she came to Kitchener in 1900. Her husband, Menno B. Rickert, died in 1918.

She was a member of Trinity United Church and the Senior Citizens Club.

Surviving are a son, Milton of Colorado, six sisters, Mrs. Belle Ford of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Clara Ott of Fayettville, N.Y.; Mrs. Lena Hurst of Winnipeg, Mrs. Melissa Wilkins of Mount Pleasant, Mrs. Vera Campbell of Barr Francisco, and Mrs. Edna James of Vancouver; a brother, Joseph of Wickensburg, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Three sons, a daughter, three sisters and a brother predeceased her.

The body is at the Keffer Funeral Home where the funeral will be conducted Thursday at 3 pm by Rev. Orville P. Hossie. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. A. W. Hilborn

Word has been received by Mrs. Ellen Rickert, 17 Otto St., of the death of her sister, Mrs. A. W. Hilborn, 82, of Galt, Saturday. Mrs. Hilborn went to Galt 45 years ago. She was a member of the Wesley United Church. Surviving are one son, Dr. G. V. Hilborn of Preston; eight sisters, Mrs. Rickert, Mrs. John Ford of Seattle. Washington; Mrs. C. G. Ott, Worcester. Mass.: Mrs. C. P. Wilkins of Brantford; Mrs. William Hurst of Winnipeg; Mrs. Tmma Thomas of Brantford; Mrs. J. Campbell of San Francisco; Mrs. H. E. BRANTFORD - Mrs. James Thomas, of 111 Dufferin Ave., died early today at Brantford General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 78. The former Ernmaretta Leah Unger, a daughter of pioneer parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Unger, she was born at Mannheim and had lived in Preston for many nears before moving to Brantford, She was house-keeper for the late Hugh Howie, of Dufferin avenue until his death four years ago. She was a Brantford resident for 18 years. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Brant avenue United Church, Brantford. She was an active church worker and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving is one stepson, James Thomas, Kitchener, one brother Joseph Unger of Wickenburg Ariz.: seven sisters, Mrs. Lean Hurst,Winnipeg, Mrs. Verda Campbell, San Francisco, Mrs. Edna James, Vancouver, Mrs. Allan Reickart, Kitchener, Mrs. Isabel Ford, Seattle, Mrs. Carl Ott, Syracuse, N.Y. and Mrs. Melissa Wilkins, Mount Pleasant. The body is at the H. K. Stager Funeral Home where the service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Preston Cemetery. Rev. Arthur Kewley, minister of Brant avenue United Church, Brantford, will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. H. Y. Herlihey, of St Paul's United Church, Preston.

Ernst.--Daniel B. Ernst, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ernst of Heidelberg, Ont., was born Feb. 3, 1865; died Jan. 2, 1927; aged 61 y. 10 m. 30 d. His first wife, Fanny Rudy, died about 10 years ago. Later he married Barbara Sauder, widow of Moses Sauder of New Holland, Pa. Besides the widow he leaves the 5 sons, 2 daughters, 1 sister, and 3 brothers. The oldest son, Josiah, died 1917. Bro. Ernst united with the Mennonite Church in his youth, and remained a faithful member to the end. Nearly two years ago he began to be troubled with a sore toe, which later was found to be cancer. After months of intense suffering it was decided to amputate his leg below the knee. This was done last summer and at first it seemed as if he would get well, but later he again began to fail and soon there were signs of internal cancers, which were the cause of his death. He possessed a wonderful constitution, great physical strength, and an unusually sweet and cheerful disposition. He was ready and anxious to leave this world and be with his Savior. Funeral services Jan. 5, by Jesse B. Martin at the home, and Oliver Snider and Moses M. Brubaker at St. Jacobs Church. Texts, Isa. 33: 17; Job 14: 14.

Ernst.-Henry B. Ernst was born at Bamberg, Ont., March 11, 1873; died at his residence in Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 1, 1937; aged 64 y. 7 m. 19 d. He was married to Eleanor Randall who predeceased him 27 years ago. He leaves his beloved wife and 2 sons (Eldon of Embro, Stanley at home), 3 daughters (Mrs. Henry Scheerer and Mrs. John Scheerer of St. Jacobs, and Elma at home). Brother Ernst accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church in which communion he fellowshipped until the Lord called him away. Services were in charge of Bro. J. B. Martin, assisted by Bros. N.. Hunsberger and Jonas Snider. Text, I Cor. 15: 20.

Ernst - Levi Ernst was born in Wilmot Tp., Waterloo Co., March 23, 1860; died March 7, 1938, at his home near Plunkett, Sask,; aged 77 y. less 16 d. Surviving are his wife (Charlotte), 2 daughters (Mrs. Ida Schields of Dodson, Mont., and Mrs. Clara Busch of Guernsey, Sask.), 6 sons (Dr. Angus Ernst of Watrons, Sask.; Ira, David, and Herbert of Guernsey, Sask.; Lorne and Stanley of Plunkett), 2 brothers (Henry and George of Elmira, Ont.), and 1 step-sister, Mrs. Lovina Brubacker of St. Jacobs, Ont. About 2 years ago he suffered a stroke and has since been in poor health, confined to his bed since last November. Funeral services were conducted March 10 at the Sharon Mennonite Church by M.H. Schmitt. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

HENRY ERNST

Henry Ernst, 86, died Wednesday of last week at his home here. Born in Wellesley Township, he farmed near Macton for 50 years and had lived in Elmira the past 20 years.

He was the son of the late David Ernst and the former Elena Bechtel.

Besides his widow, the former Elizabeth Foell, he is survived by one daughter, Matilda, in Elmira; one brother and one sister. Three children predeceased him.

Funeral was held Saturday, at 3 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, with Rev. C. L. Mitchell of Gale Presbyterian Church in charge. Burial was in Elmira Cemetery.

GEORGE ERNST

The death of George Ernst, 81, occurred at his residence, 28 Park Ave., early Thursday, following a brief illness.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Ernst he Was born in Wilmot Township, March 4, 1866. His marriage to the former Mary Foell, who survives, took place in Kitchener in 1899. The couple farmed near Glenallan for 23 years and resided in Elmira for the past 35 years. Mr. Ernst was a member of Gale Presbyterian Church.

Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Irva Jefferson, Elmira; Mrs. A. H. (Minnie) Heiser, Kitchener; Mrs. Clarence (Lena) Strome, Windsor; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Henry and David, of Elmira, and one sister, Mrs. Eli Brubacher, St. Jacobs, also survive. One son Irvin predeceased him in 1945.

The funeral service was held Monday at 3 p.m. from the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel. Interment was made in the Elmira Cemetery. Rev. C. L. Mitchell officiated.

Pastor and Wife Are 50 Years Wed

An interesting event took place Sunday when Rev. and Mrs. Orphen Wismer of Baden celebrated their golden anniversary. They has as attendants 50 years ago Mr. And Mrs. N. Snyder of Stasburg and they attended Sunday's anniversary. All of Mr. And Mrs. Wismer's eight children are living. Seven were present Sunday, Bryon of McCallsbury, Iowa, Mrs. Isaac Snyder of Baden, Herbert of Baden, Elmer of Kitchener, Jerry of Ayr, and Mrs. Lorne Shantz of Baden. Milton of Windsor was not able to attend. Dinner was served at Forest Hill Gardens, after which the family spent the afternoon at the old homestead near Baden, where their son Herbert now resides. Mr. and Mrs. Wismer were presented with two lovely gifts, one from the family and one from Mr. And Mrs. Snyder, for which Mr. Wismer gave hearty thanks.

BECHTEL, Herbert J.

At the Freeport Hospital, Freeport, on Sunday, Jan. 30^th 1972, following a lengthy illness, Herbert J. Bechtel, age 86 years, of 64 Cedar St., North, husband of the late Laura Boehmer, father of Clarence of Waterloo, Mrs. Mable (Mabe) Morrison of Bridgeport, Mrs. George (Gerine) Haubach of Paradise Lake, Mrs. Walter (Almeda) Reeve of Kitchener and Mrs. Priscilla Jones of Galt; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; besides his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, one daughter Mrs. John (Evelyn) Noble and five sisters. Mr. Bechtel was involved in sports and in 1906 pitched the winning baseball game for the Waterloo Beavers to give the team the first Ontario Championship. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral home, 621 King St. West, Kitchener, where funeral and committal service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Frank Morgan officiating. Burial in the First Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Gilbert Bechtel - Gilbert Bechtel, 79, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold (Marguerite) Snider of Bloomingdale. Death was due to a stroke. Born in Wilmot Township, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Bechtel, he was a prominent mason contractor in this area for many years. His marriage to the former Salome Hoffman, who predeceased him in 1958, took place at New Dundee in 1910. He was a member of the United Church. Surviving besides his daughter at Bloomingdale are one son, George W. Bechtel of Plymouth, England, serving with the submarine branch of the Royal Canadian Navy, and six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where service will be held Tuesday at 3: 30 pm, Rev. Bruce McIntyre will conduct the service. Interment will be in Snyder Mennonite Cemetery, Bloomingdale.
