Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.

    Detwiler, George Bechtel (1847-1931).

George Bechtel Detwiler was born near Roseville in Waterloo Co., ON. A Mennonite, he married Harriet Tyson, a Brethren in Christ from Pennsylvania, in 1870. Four years later he joined her denomination. After teaching school for several years, he moved in 1885 with his family to a farm near Fort Erie, where he became a minister in the Bertie congregation and helped organize the first Sunday school in at least two Ontario Brethren in Christ congregations.

In 1899 the Detwilers moved to Abilene, KS where he became first associate editor and a few months later editor of his denomination's paper, Evangelical Visitor. In 1902 the editorial offices and the Detwilers moved to Harrisburg, PA. Although he did not accept the doctrine of sanctification that was being increasingly favored in the Brethren in Christ Church, he endeavored in his editing to maintain a balance between opposing positions on the doctrine. This editorial policy, however, led in 1918 to his replacement as editor by Vernon Stump, a strong holiness advocate. Thereafter, under Stump, Evangelical Visitor became a holiness paper. From 1917 to 1925 he taught Bible at Messiah Bible College (later Messiah College). Throughout his life he was a respected Bible commentator and Bible conference speaker.

    DANIEL B. DETWEILER 1860-1919

Daniel B. Detweiler was one of the three "fathers of hydro" in Ontario. After years of hard effort, in association with others, his dream of hydro electric power as a provincial undertaking became a reality. He travelled dusty county roads on his bicycle seeking the support of councils in the project.

A cairn erected in 1935 in his native Roseville is a monument to his participation in the enterprise. In 1963, Ontario Hydro named the transformer station at Petersburg after him. In 1918 he developed water power near Michipicoten on Lake Superior and organized the Algoma factory and in 1901 joined a shoe company.

Detweiler was a leading member and President of the Board of Trade and a member of the Kitchener Light Commission

In Her Death Kitchener Loses Only Woman Member Of World Executive

With the passing of Dr. Sara H. Detwiler, whose funeral took place yesterday. Kitchener lost its only woman realdent with the distinction of being on the world executive of an organization. Dr. Det wiler was on the executive committee of the World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union as superintendent of the Travellers' Aid department for the world.

In addition to holding office on the world executive of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union Dr. Detweller held the same office in the Dominion W.CTU and also in the Ontario provincial organization. And although Dr. Detwiler had the honor of being chosen to head a department in the world executive of her chosen organization she did not hold the first link in the chain, the local union - beneath her interest. For a number of years she served as treasurer of the Kitchener Union the members of which credit her with the Kitchener Union's success in meeting its financial obligations year by year.

To her activity as world superintendent of travellers' aid Dr. Detwiler gave unstintingly and unselfishly of her time, energy and devotion often declaring. "there is no other organization better fitted to develop this work than the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and there is no other phase of social service effort which produces better results for the amount of energy expended."

    Notes:

    MISS LENORA DETWILER.

The death of Miss Lenora Detwiler came as a shock to her many friends. Though for some time she has been in poor health, it was not until the last two or three weeks that her condition was considered serious.

Having lived in Berlin all her life, attending the Public, High and Technical schools, and for a short time having taught in Suddaby School, she was well known, highly esteemed and much loved by a wide circle in this city.

She was an active church worker, being organist in the U. B. Church, and the much appreciated teacher of the young ladies' class until failing health compelled her to resign.

How much she will be missed only those who knew and loved her can tell. The influence of her gentle, true and Christian life will live after her in the lives of those with whom came in contact.

She is survived by her father and mother; Ald. and Mrs. Detwiler and brother, Dr. Fidon S. Detwiler of London, and two younger sisters, Mrs Milton Herner, of Winnipeg, and Miss Ethel at home.

The funeral took place on Saturday, May 3rd, at 2 p.m. from the family residence, 105 Queen St. N.,. to the East End Cemetery.

Norma was an enthusiastic and meticulous genealogist and was an organizer of two large Huber Family re-unions in 1991 and 2000. She loved bird-watching and travelling (even going on a trip to the Amazon in her eighties). Both she and her sister Doris supported numerous charities related to the preservation of the environment and wildlife and aid in 3rd world countries. Also, Norma sponsored a foster child for many years in South America. She sang in various church choirs and especially enjoyed being a bell-ringer in a choral group. Norma trained as a nurse at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital and then worked in the lab at the Banting Institute until she retired. She caringly looked after Doris helping her reach the age of 103. A special thanks to Seble and Dorine, her home care workers, her friends at Sandhills Retirement community and her longtime friends (too many to list) who helped her remain active and enthusiastic until her passing. She was cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date. To leave a message of condolence, please visit www.ratzbechtelfuneralhome.com.

    Notes:

HUBER, Dr. David Grant Dr. David Grant Huber passed away peacefully on January 20, 2011 at the Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Grant was born on April 20, 1919 in Regina, SK to Herbert and Mabel Huber. He spent most of his childhood in Kitchener, ON and attended the University of Toronto where he took both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mechanical engineering in his specialty of fluid mechanics. A research and teaching position followed at the university. In 1943 he married Mary Louise Shelley of Kitchener and together they had four children in their 67 years of marriage. In 1954 the family moved to Iowa City where Grant took his PHD in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University. In 1958 he took the position of Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the newly formed faculty at McMaster University, Hamilton, ON. The family lived in Ancaster until 1968 when he moved to the newly formed department of engineering at the University of Calgary. During his tenure at McMaster, Grant was asked by the Canadian government to help start Karnataka Regional Engineering College outside of Mangalore, India in 1965 which was the start of many a family adventure overseas. The College has grown to be one of the most respected universities in India and was the basis of the city of Hamilton being twinned with Mangalore. Dr. Huber left the University of Calgary to take a position at Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zealand. He retired in 1985 in Ancaster where he loved walking in the valley. He volunteered for many years for the Ancaster Historical Society but in the summers, Mary and Grant would be canoeing, swimming and singing around the campfire at their beloved cottage of over 50 years on Ahmic Lake near Parry Sound. Grant's passion was teaching. The Dr. David Grant Huber Scholarship to help students entering engineering from Westcliffe, Colorado high school will maintain his legacy of the importance of science education to the betterment of society. His friends and family will remember him for instilling the need for excellence in work, friendship, fun and adventure in life. Dr. Huber was preceded by his brother Ross and daughter Nancy. He is survived by his wife Mary, now of Vancouver, two sisters, Norma and Doris of Kitchener, niece Barbara Mori (husband Rick) of Toronto, three sons, David of Westcliffe, CO (wife Cynthia), Drs. Chris (wife Kedy) and Alan (wife Ngaio) of Vancouver, along with four wonderful grandchildren, Jasmine, Jason, Jeremy and Ella. He will be buried in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted to the Mennonite Central Committee or UNICEF
