Notes:
To the Friends in Private To Be Torn up.
Knowing that you will get a history of this affair with Uncle Pringle I will give you a True version of the affair so as You will be rightly informed. You of course are aware that Uncle although not counted a hard drinker spent a good deal of his Time in the Tavern at nights and these nights of carousing ended in Drunkenness. These sprees were not so frequent but they always ended the one way. The Broken leg at Paris was caused through Whiskey & since then he has occasionally had some outbursts. The sum and substance of the whole thing is this that if any one continues to drink it soon get worse & worse - about a month ago he was going to fight in Hilborns' at four oclock in the morning, this last spree was kept up till five oclock. he got very ugly and abusive and quarreled with The Brown's Boys and when unfit for them they abused him. his face was bruised and one eye a little Black too bad to be seen down street. a thing I earnestly hoped for as it brings shame. he is heartily sorry and ashamed of it and has not been down street since and he has sworn from Drink and going to join to Temperance Society. This has made us feel glad for it is a right step for him or any one and I earnestly hope God will move his heart aright and keep him and us all under his protecting
arms .
Yrs

Death of Mrs. Smuck
Expired Suddenly on Tuesday Afternoon While Visiting at Preston
Death came suddenly to Mrs. Robert Smuck, South Dumfries, on Tuesday afternoon while visiting at the home of her sister-in-law. Mrs. George Cross, Preston. Accompanied by her son, Currie, she had motored to that town for a short visit on Tuesday morning. While returning to the home of Mrs. Cross after being down town, she complained of a sudden heart attack and had to be assisted the remaining 50 yards to the residence. Medical assistance was quickly summoned, but to no avail, death resulting in a few moments. Mrs. Smuck, whose maiden name was Agnes Currie, was a daughter of the late John Currie. She was born on the farm now occupied by A. W. Snyder, and after her marriage 39 years ago went to reside on the farm of her husband three miles south of Ayr. She was a member of Knox United Church and took an active part in the different women's organizations of the congregation, taking a particular interest in the affairs of the Kate M. Thomson mission auxiliary. She will be greatly missed in the social life of the community, where her pleasing personality won for her a host of warm friends. Besides her sorrowing husband, she is survived by one son, Currie; also by one sister, Mrs. Margaret Bell, of Ayr. The funeral will take place this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock to the Ayr Cemetery.

Alfred Wyllie Watson Passes
The village was saddened on Monday by the death of one of its most prominent and highly esteemed residents, Alfred Wyllie Watson, who passed away in Wellesley Hospital, Toronto, in his 69th year. He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Watson had been associated with the family firm of John Watson Mfg. Co. Ltd. nearly all is life, and had been president since the death of his father in 1943. The company, which is Ayr's oldest industry, was founded by his grandfather in 1847, and has been of vast influence in Ayr's economy over the decades. Although born in Winnipeg, he came to Ayr with his parents, the late Alfred E. Watson and Jeannie Wyllie, when he was only 1 ½ years old. Both parents were form families who were early Ayr pioneers and he was proud of these deep roots in this village. This close identification with Ayr's history and deep concern over the village's well-being prompted Mr. Watson to be a benefactor to many worthwhile projects over the years. His concern for Ayr's citizens was felt by many who had sought his advice on a multitude of personal problems, and always came away with the sound advice they knew they would receive. At various time over the years he held executive posts with various organizations. Among them were the Ayr Cemetery Company, of which he was vice-president, and the Waterloo County Historical Society which he served as an Ayr representative for some years. Mr. Watson was a valued member of Knox United Church. He was a well-known sports enthusiast here, and is particularly well remembered by the Ayr Vets softball club for his helpful assistance in bygone years. In early days he played hockey and his interest in the game remained over the years - mainly as a booster for the minor hockey system here. Mr. Watson was also an enthusiastic curler and golfer in former years. Mr. Watson received his elementary education at Ayr schools and later attended Galt Collegiate and Ridley College, St. Catharines. He served overseas with the Mechanical Transport during World War I and was a casualty from a gas attack. He was sadly conscious of the gradual passing of first World War veterans here and had commented only recently on the fact that he was the last surviving veteran of that war who had enlisted from Ayr and served in France. Following his return from overseas, he immediately became associated with the management of the family firm, and had served as president since his father's death in 1943. Under his guidance the firm underwent many changes and renovation, in both product and procedures. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Sara Crawford, are a daughter, Mrs. James M. Donnelly (Mary Elizabeth) of Goderich, a son, John Wyllie Watson of Toronto; a sister, Mrs. James H. Lovett (Dorothy) of Toronto, and several grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Alma Quance, in 1940.

Notes:
Death Of John H. Robertson
A well-known Ayr resident, John Herbert Robertson died suddenly at his home on Northumberland St. on Friday as the result of a heart attack. The late Mr. Robertson was 52 years of age. He was born in Woodstock, a son of the late Dr. A. R. Robertson and Mrs. Robertson, and came to Ayr as a child, where his father carried on a dental practice for many years. In his early years, Jack, as he was known to many friends, was an outstanding hockey player. From Ayr Continuation School teams, he graduated to the Ayr Victorias of the early '30's where he performed brilliantly as a forward. His skill caught the attention of the Detroit Red Wings system and he received a tryout with that team. The late Mr. Robertson lived nearly all his life in this vicinity with the exception of a few years spent in Brantford district. He was a member of Alexandria Presbyterian Church, Brantford. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Elsie Bell, are a son, Robert of Hamilton; a daughter, Mrs. David Wray (Betty) of Kitchener, and a brother, Robert of Utica, Mich.
