    Another Pioneer Gone

In the passing of Mr. John Guthrie, who died at his late residence on Saturday, August 23, from the effects of a fall from a load of grain a week prior to his decease, the home loses a good, kind loving husband and father, and the church and community one of the best of men, and one of the most familiar and friendly personalities. Well and widely known, and highly esteemed for his sterling qualities of character, he held an honored place among his fellowmen, and belonged to that class of people that exalteth a nation and who have helped very largely to give Canada its prestige among the leading nations of the world. He was one of the most prosperous farmers in the district. Always busy, work became the habit of his life, and the summons to rest found him on duty. Mr. Guthrie will be very much missed in the community and in Stanley Street church, Ayr, where he was want to worship so faithfully, as a member, for nearly seventy years. Mr. Guthrie was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and when yet a lad of two years came with his parents and other members of their family to this country in the year 1834, taking up residence n the old homestead farm, now occupied by Mr. Thos. Guthrie. A few years later Mr. John Guthrie removed to the township of Blenheim, where he and his brother Robert jointly owned and farmed lot No. 2, in the 8th con. In 1864 Mr. Guthrie married Miss Elizabeth Morton and established their first home on the farm, holding sacred its early baptismal scriptural name "Goshen," now occupied by Mr. James E. Black. In 1870 Mr. Guthrie purchased what is known as the "Rosedale Farm," where he resided until his decease. Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie were given four children three daughters and one son, viz.: Mrs. James A. Edgar, (deceased); Mrs. G. D. Black, "Wilton Farm," Ayr; Mrs. D. Scott, Galt, and Morton at home. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mrs. Guthrie and family in this their time of sad bereavement and sorrow. The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m., the services at the house and grave being conducted by deceased's pastor, the Rev. D. I. Ellison, assisted by Rev. W. M. Grant. The pallbearers were all nephews of deceased, viz.: William Guthrie, Henry Guthrie, John D. Guthrie, George Guthrie, Thos. Guthrie and William Manson.

    Notes:

Mrs. George D. Black Passes - A life dedicated to her family and God ended on Monday when death claimed Mary Smith Guthrie, widow of George D. Black, at her home on "Wilton Farm," Blenheim townline. The late Mrs. Black had been in indifferent health for some time and eventually succumbed to pneumonia following a fall in her home. Mrs. Black was a lifelong resident of the community and, in her prolonged span of nearly 84 years, she was a sterling example of the fine Scottish characteristics of Christian living and devoted motherhood. A daughter of John Guthrie and Elizabeth Morton, she was born on the farm now owned by her son-in-law, Ernest Cochrane, on the 9th concession. Her father was a Scottish pioneer in the district and her mother, though born near Ayr, originated from the same hardy race. These forebears could be best described as patriarchal families, for their descendants branched out through this community until they now number in the scores. In 1887 she was married to George D. Black, who predeceased her, a year and a half ago. The wedding took place at the farm home now owned by William Kinnaird, Jr., directly across the road from the farm where the couple spent the remainder of their days. This union was blessed with one son, George Inglis, who passed away a few years ago, and three daughters, Mrs. Ernest Cochrane (Margaret), Misses Elizabeth and Mary, residing at home. Working together and living the joys and disappointments of life together, Mr. and Mrs. Black found the years slipped by only too rapidly. But it was a divine blessing that two people so extremely happy should not soon be parted, and they enjoyed the singular distinction of celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary before Mr. Black's death. Originally Mrs. Black was a devout Presbyterian, one of the foremost members of Stanley Street Church in Ayr, but transferred her membership to Knox United when church union was consummated. Her intense interest in the missionary work of the church found an outlet in the Woman's Missionary Society, where her sustained efforts were rewarded with a life membership in the Kate M. Thomson Auxiliary. In social life, she turned to the Ayr Women's Institute which benefited for many years by her unceasing efforts toward its advancement. For the most part, however, Mrs. Black found her life fulfilled in the home, and it was here that she could be found by her neighbors, happily regulating the tenor of her domain. By way of diversion, Mrs. Black became a profound reader and could ably discuss the works of many of the masters. In her death, the community mourns the loss of a woman whose every action bespoke the sterling qualities of the Scottish people who pioneered this district\emdash kindness, integrity, ambition, Christianity and determination. All of these virtues were component parts of Mrs. Black's character, and the impression left by her way of living is indelibly stamped in the minds of her scores of friends and neighbors as an example well followed. Besides three daughters, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. David B, Scott, Galt, and a brother, Morton Guthrie, Ayr. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral was held from her late residence this (Wednesday) afternoon, with service conducted by Rev. W. D. Goodger. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.

    • Residence: 1918, North Dumfries Concession 07 Lot 36, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada

    Notes:

    Death of Wyllie Manson

Long ago we had exhausted the triple adjective phrase sad, sadder, saddest, in describing the inroads of Influenza and still those pathetic words continue to apply with increased significance.

Of all the sad cases in this community which we have been called upon to report in connection with the prevailing epidemic, perhaps the saddest so far occurred on Saturday, when a young newly married man in the person of Adam Wyllie Manson, who had just entered upon the duties and responsibilities of citizenship, was snatched from a sphere of usefulness in which he gave promise of more than average aptitude.

Though his case was viewed with alarm from the first, the outcome was in the nature of a shock, and the deepest sympathy of the entire community goes out to the disconsolate bride, father, mother and sisters.

Deceased was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Manson of Ayr, who had just transferred their homestead to Wyllie and moved into town. Under the circumstances his death creates a situation that will be difficult to adjust. What the solution will be time alone will determine.

Wyllie Manson, who was in his 27th year, was born on the farm on which he died. Two months before his death he married Miss Ella Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Marshall.

From his boyhood the deceased was prominent in Sabbath school work, and at the time of his death was sec.-Treas. Of Knox United Sunday school, and was also an enthusiastic worker in other departments of the Church of which he was a consistent member. He was interested in agriculture and prominent n the Junior Farmers' club. In athletic sports he gave most attention to bowling and hockey.

Besides his wife, father and mother, the deceased is survived by five sisters. They are - Gladys, teacher at Plattsville, (who is ill with "Flu"), Bessie, St. Catharine's, Jean, Mary, Edna, and Stella, at home. The funeral, which took place to the Ayr cemetery on Monday, was well attended, and a wealth of beautiful flowers attested the esteem in which the deceased was held. Rev. J.J. Brown conducted the service, assisted by Rev. D. (?), Toronto, formerly pastor of Stanley St. Church, Ayr. The pallbearers were Messrs. Rolland Maeder, Filshie Cuthbertson, John Edgar, Wm. Marshall, David Hall and Alex Gourlay.
