New Dundee street renamed after WWII veteran Russell Saltzberry

    Doug Coxson Independent staff

A forgotten street in New Dundee may be short in measure, but it will soon earn significance for anyone who respects and honours the sacrifice of Canada's war veterans.

Square Street, which links Main and South streets in the village, will officially be changed to Saltzberry Path this week when the new sign is installed.....Saltzberry was the only son of Alva and Florence Saltzberry, of New Dundee. O'Krafka found newspaper reports from the time of his death that describe him as an outstanding athlete who pitched for New Dundee's softball team during the South Waterloo Rural Softball League Championship in 1933.....The Lancaster Saltzberry was in went missing during a night raid against Laon, France in April 1944. The entire crew was listed as Missing In Action until it was later determined the aircraft went down in a fiery crash that made identifying the bodies impossible.
