The third death referred to was that of Mr. Jacob Bender, who died about noon on Monday. Deceased was born in Michelsteid, Baden Germany, and came to this country in his youth with his parents to whom he proved an efficient help in his old age, he being their only son. He had been troubled for a long time with his stomach and for a couple of weeks he could take no food at all. On examination after death it was found that the passage leading to the stomach was almost closed up and above the restricted part an aperture caused probably by violent vomiting. Deceased lived about 30 years on a farm in Upper Woolwich now owned by his son in law, Mr. Andrew Schmidt. About 12 years ago he moved to Elmira where he first wife died, and he was married again to Mrs. Kaiser, who survives him together with two daughters, Mrs. Schmidt and Mrs. Levi Yost. He was a very quiet and peaceful citizen and a good neighbor and a consistent member of the Evangelical denomination. He was buried in Upper Woolwich, having reached the age of 64 years, 8 months and 19 days. The ranks of the Old Woolwich pioneers have been greatly thinned within the last 10 years and soon they will all be laid to rest, and it is but fitting that the present generation, which owes so much to them and their labors, should hold them grateful and loving remembrance.

Fatal Accident in Wellesley

On Sunday morning, July 12th, Mr. Henry Hill, of Wellesley Village, started with a one horse carriage for the Evangelical meeting at Lisbon. The load consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Hill, their child, a servant girl, and a lad named Lips, an apprentice as shoemaker in his shop. When a little on the south side of the village, the horse started to kick, and turned to one side, throwing the occupants over an embankment about 15 feet high. Mrs. Hill fell on her head and shoulders, and when picked up it was found that her neck was broken, and that her death had been instantaneous. The rest of the party were bruised, some of them quite seriously, but nothing serious anticipated.

Mrs. Margaret Schmidt, 14 Snyder Ave., died Sunday morning at the Turner Private Hospital at the age of 81 years, following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Andrew B. Schmidt who passed away April 13, 1930. Born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bender of North Woolwich on Oct. 20, 1863, she was married to Mr. Schmidt on March 12, 1885 at her home. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Church and had been active in its organizations.

Surviving are two sons, Harvey J. of North Woolwich and Oscar H., Park St., Elmira, and one daughter Gertrude, Reg. N., of Toronto. One daughter, Eleanor, died in 1918. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Levi (Susannah) Yost of Lydia St., Kitchener.

The funeral service was held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel. Burial was made in the Elmira Cemetery. Rev. E.N. Mohr officiated.

The announcement on Saturday last of the death of Mr. Geo. Hill, of Spokane, Wash., came as a shock to his friends here, who wore not aware of his illness. It is particularly sad as Mr. Hill had written only a few days before to some of his relatives saying he would visit Wellesley in July. He has been in the shoe business in Spokane since leaving Wellesley about 18 years ago. Erysipelas was the cause of his death at the early age of 41 [?] years. He leaves a wife (formerly Miss Schmidt, of Seabringsville [sic]) and two children to whom the sympathy of Wellesley is extended and also to the brothers and sisters of deceased.

Hill & Ratz.

Here is a firm that conducts as large a business as any other two men in the county. They have a large saw and planing mill, furniture factory and undertaking establishment. They also manufacture sash, doors, blinds, etc. In fact, they are prepared to turn out everything in the wood line required in the building of a house and furnishing it. They also manufacture cheese boxes. Their establishment is equipped with the most modern and up-to-date machinery. Their large wareroom, a short distance from the factory and saw mill, is filled to its utmost capacity with parlor and bedroom sets and other household furniture. They have probably as large and fine a display of the latest styles of furniture as you will find anywhere in the county. In the display is a bedstead that particularly attracted the attention of the writer It was made entirely by Land by one of their workmen. It is an exquisite piece of work, the carving especially showing the taste of a skilled mechanic The undertaking department is supplied with everything necessary for the proper burial of the dead. Messre. Hill & Ratz are energetic young business men, and in the course of a year turn out a vast amount of lumber and furnish the material for a large number of residences throughout this section They also have a fine trade in the furniture line They also deal in shingles, of which they sell many thousands. Mr. Ratz, who was formerly a school teacher, came in as a partner with Mr. Hill last January, has just about completed a handsome, commodious residence in the immediate neighborhood of their works. In locking over their premises I became somewhat surprised, as I was under the impression that a village of not more than eight hundred inhabitants could not afford a manufacturing industry of the extent of that of Messre. Hill & Ratz The saw mill was established by Menno Bechtel in 1876, and who also operated a steam mill. The saw mill still has a large patronage and thousands of logs are annually converted into timber.

Wife of Mayor Ratz Bereaved in Death of Brother, J. Hill

Word was received wife of Mayor Henry E. Ratz Waterloo, announcing her brother, John Hill, his home in Toronto Monday evening following a short illness. He was in his 69th year.

There survive his wife, one son, Lorne Hill, of Beamsville, and one daughter, Mrs. M. K. Morrow, of Buffalo; one brother, Jacob Hill of Spokane, Wash., three sisters, Mrs. H. G. Ratz, Waterloo, Mrs. Charles H. Schwalm, Buffalo, and Mrs. M. S. Wilhelm of Wellesley.

The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the undertaking parlors of Ratz & Bechtel, Queen St. S., Kitchener. Interment will be made in Mount Hope Cemetery, Waterloo.

The late John Hill, who was well and favorably known in Waterloo County, was born in Wellesley, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hill. For some years he conducted a retail shoe store in Wellesley. Later he moved to Caledonia and then to Canboro where he was engaged in the real estate business. He later moved to Texas where he lived for ten years, returning to Canada two years ago. Owing to a heart condition, he has lived retired, the past few years. Mr. and Mrs. Hill made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Walter Morrow, at Buffalo, the past two years and were spending the winter with his sister- in-law, Mrs. H. Schmidt, at Lansing, rear away Toronto, where he passed.

Harvey J. Schmidt, 60, of North Woolwich, died Monday after a short illness at the K-W Hospital. Born in North Woolwich Township, April 6, 1886, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew D. Schmidt. In 1912 he married the former Hannah Miller. He had lived in the North Woolwich district his entire lifetime. R. Schmidt had been an Elmira Signet correspondent for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Gladys and Mrs. Irvin, (Rhoda) Snyder, both at home, a brother Oscar of Elmira and a sister Gertrude, a registered nurse of Toronto.
The remains rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel, Elmira where funeral service was held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Burial was made in the Elmira Cemetery. Rev. E. N. Mohr of Elmira Zion Evangelical Church officiated.
