Former Resident Meets With Fatal Accident

Herman Weise Killed at Strathroy in Level Crossing Accident

Mr. Herman Wiese, a former well-known resident of New Hamburg died in the Strathroy hospital about 4 o'clock on Monday afternoon as a result of injuries received when his car was struck by a C. N. R. passenger train about seven o'clock on Sunday evening. His daughter, Evelyn, aged 17 and Ada Colgrove, daughter of Rev. Mr. Colgrove of the United Church, the other occupants of the car were cut by flying glass and suffered severely from shock.

The Wiese car was proceeding north across the crossing on the way to church when it was struck by the Maple Leaf east-bound flier, No. 4. in charge of Conductor Totten. The machine with its three passengers was thrown about 50 feet along the track and badly demolished. From the wreckage the two girls were able to extricate themselves, but Mr. Wiese was in a semiconscious condition. The occupants of the car were removed to Strathroy hospital, where Dr. G. P. McFadden attended. Wiese's condition was regarded as critical from the first as he suffered head injures, fracture of both thighs, and internal injuries, to which he succumbed on Monday afternoon.

A preliminary hearing was held on Monday night into the fatality. High Constable Wharton impaneled a jury which after viewing the body adjourned until June 2 at 2.30 p.m.

It is believed that Mr. Wiese as he approached the tracks became confused by the approaching trains, and also by the glare of the sun, and misjudged the distance. His car stopped right in front of the train and was completely wrecked.

The late Mr. Wiese was about 68 years of age and was born in Kitchener. He came to New Hamburg about 40 years ago and for many years was employed as head carver in the Hahn furniture factory here. During his residence here he was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of the church choir and for some years a church trustee. He was a member of the local Oddfellow lodge and had a wide circle of friends who were deeply grieved to learn of his tragic death. The late Mr. Wiese moved with his family to Strathroy about 23 years ago, where he was foreman in the carving department of the Strathroy furniture factory.

During his residence in Strathroy the late Mr. Wiese took an active interest in the affairs of of the town. He was a member of the town council for a number of years and at the time of his death was member of the town hall committee. He was also prominent in fraternal affairs of the Oddfellows and Foresters.

The deceased leaves his sorrowing widow, one son, Dr. Theodore Wiese, of Bell River, and one daughter, Evelyn, at home. His eldest son, Harold, made the supreme sacrifice in the world war.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from his late home to the Strathroy cemetery and was conducted by Rev. F. H Brownless, rector of the Anglican church where the deceased worshipped. The pallbearers were Mayor Frank Langan and other prominent citizens of the town.
