Very Sad Drowning Case

A very sad and painful case of drowning occurred in Galt on Monday afternoon last. It appears that shortly after two o'clock some one of the hands on a freight train which was shunting on the track running along the edge of the pond, near the old Dumfries Mills, saw what was taken to be the body of a boy, floating at the mouth of the race which leaves the pond and runs to the mill. The train was backed down and investigation proved the surmise correct. The body was immediately taken from the water and an attempt at resuscitation made, but efforts were useless, conjectures being the the poor little fellow had been in the water for from half to three quarters of an hour. Identification was not long in deciding that the little fellow was Edward, a son of Mr. Wm. Smith's, of Smith and Wilkinson, contractors. As to how he fell into the water cannot be ascertained. At the point, the fence which runs along the side of the track projects a little over the race. In going to school, children were in the habit of taking this way as a short cut, and when they came to the fence swung round the end of it. It is supposed this little boy tried this, as perhaps he had often done before, but by some means he must have lost his hold and fallen into the race. If this is correct the accident must have occurred between 1 and half-past, as school goes in at the latter time. The little boy was in his7th year, bright and intelligent, and his loss is most severely felt by his sorrowing parents.
