THE WOOLWICH COUNCIL
A Woolwich Township Council was organized on January 21st, 1850. The councillors were: John Meyer, Edward Passmore, Peter Wenger, Peter Hay, and Wm. Veitch. They met "at Conestoga, in Kurtz's tavern." The members chose John Meyer as reeve and named James Dow as clerk and treasurer; Moses Springer as assessor on the east side of the Grand River and Christian Hurst on the west wide, each at 6 pounds ($24) a year; and Wm. Reynolds as collector, with a salary of five and a half per cent. of his collections. Charles Hendry was appointed auditor.
The council ordered a seal and studied a plan for building a bridge across the Conestoga River; appointed a road surveyor and considered the advisability of appointing a local superin-tendent of schools. For a number of years schools, bridges, roads, and the regulation of taverns were the chief items of business.
Waterloo County's provisional municipal council met in Berlin on May 3rd, 1852. Woolwich was represented by Reeve John Meyer and Deputy-Reeve Peter Wenger.

Louisa Ann Stauffer, daughter of John and Maria Myers, was born in Waterloo county, Ontario, and died near Caledonia, Michigan, November 2, 1909, aged 73 years, 8 months and II days. In the year 1857 she moved with her first husband to Illinois where she lived till the death of her husband in the Civil war, when she moved back to Canada where she resided a few years, and then came to Michigan and settled on the farm where she died, although she had not continuously lived there. Many years ago she became a member of the Caledonia United Brethren church but later was transferred to the Parmalee class, and remained a faithful member of that class until called to her reward. She had been married three times and was the mother of nine children, five of whom, four daughters and one son, survive her. Six years ago she was injured by being run over by a runaway team of horses and never fully recovered from the injury. She bore her sufferings with patience and died peacefully in the triumphs of a living faith. The funeral services were conducted in the Caledonia United Brethren church by Ex-Bishop H. T. Barnaby, assisted by the writer. … O. LASH.

__________________________
Isaac W. Myers settled on the east half of section 24, in Hamilton township, in 1868, where he engaged in farming, cultivating timber and teaching. His work in the Sabbath school was highly appreciated; especially is this true of his leadership in vocal music throughout the neighborhood. In 1872 he was elected county superintendent of schools, and was re-elected in 1870. On the expiration of his term he spent a short time in selling school supplies and Ridpath's History of the United States. While engaged in this business he had an opportunity to get acquainted with men who were building up a new enterprise in various portions of the State. He at once determined that Franklin county should take a leading part in the new enterprise, the creamery. Realizing the dangers that might beset such an undertaking, and knowing the value of personal experience, he resolved to leave nothing undone that would supply the requisite experience. He accordingly went to work in a creamery as a practical butter-maker until he was acquainted with all the particulars of the business. He then built the Hampton creamery, at Hampton, the first in the county. In operating the new business he had many obstacles to overcome, as such an institution was but little known generally; but energetic perseverance was at last rewarded with success, and his business is moving along on a substantial basis. The Hampton creamery has many friends and no enemies.
Mr. Myers was born in Waterloo Co., province of Ontario, Canada, Nov. 20, 1839. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania. He remained at home until seventeen years old, where he incidentally became a teacher, and afterwards became a student at the Gait [Galt] Grammar School, which he left in 1861. Repassed the next three years in teaching in Canada. In 1864 he went to Lena, Ill. During the winter of that year he enlisted in company G, 147th Illinois Volunteer's, and served until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. He returned to Lena and in 1866 became principal of the public schools. His experience as a teacher has been extensive and successful, having spent over forty terms in the school room. He possesses well developed illustrating powers.
Mr. Myers was married in 1866 to Alice Francisco, daughter of the late Charles Francisco, of McHenry Co., Ill. She was a teacher of rare abilities, and a lady of high moral culture and refinement; one who is now indefatigable in her efforts to put her children in possession of the same qualities. Her amiability is constant and enduring. Her faith in the Christian religion is unshaken. She has ever been a willing worker in the Sabbath school. The names of their six children are Alice Inez, Orson Francisco, John Percival, Aaron Irving, Helen Maria and Garfield. The youngest, Garfield, died when he was one year old.

Bowman.- Barbara, daughter of John and Mary (Wenger) Meyer, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 12, 1849. She was the eleventh in the family of 13 children. She grew to womanhood on her father's farm near Kitchener (then Berlin), Ont., and on Sept. 26, 1867, was united in marriage to Benj. Brubaker and established a home on his nearby farm. Death entered Jan. 21, 1871, to deprive her and their two little sons of a husband and father. About four years later, March 28, 1875, she was married to Wendel C. Bowman of Kent Co., Mich. Eight children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. On June 17, 1902, death again entered, removing a husband and father. Following this, she and those of her children who were still unmarried moved to a farm which she had purchased in Barry County. Here, after nearly seven years, the family circle was again broken by the death of a son, Elias. Disposing of their farm in 1913, she has since lived with her daughter (Mrs. Elizabeth Hunsberger) at whose home she passed peacefully away on Feb. 5, 1937; aged 87 y. 8 m. 24 d. She was converted early and led a devoted, unselfish Christian life. By a kind Providence, her declining years were quite free of pain. Though continually thankful for this and patiently content to await her appointed time, she frequently expressed her willingness and, in the closing months, a strong desire to pass on to her heavenly home to meet with loved ones gone before. She leaves 1 sister (Mrs. Marian Freeland, Grand Rapids, Mich.), 1 brother (John W. Meyer, Peterborro, Ont.), 3 daughters (Mrs. Ada Long, Caledonia, Mrs. Nellie Cook, Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hunsberger, Merritt), 2 step-daughters (Mrs. Mary Pender, Caledonia, Mrs. Luella Gale, Hercules, Calif.), 5 sons (Albert M. Brubaker and Josephus M. Brubaker of Orange, Calif., Ben B. Bowman of Hastings, Chester A. Bowman of Chicago, Ill., and Wendel O. Bowman of Merritt). She was preceded in death by her husbands, 10 of her brothers and sisters, 1 infant son, 1 son (Elias), and step-son (Elo G. Bowman). Funeral services were conducted at the Gaines U. B. Church by _____McCurry. Text, Heb. 4: 9. Burial in adjoining cemetery

John Wenger Meyers, born in Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont. May 10, 1851; married. Angeline, daughter of Benjamin D. Snyder, Esq., of St. Jacobs, Ont., Dec. 26, 1872.
His father was John Meyers, and his mother was Mary Meyers, whose maiden name of Wenger appears in that of the subject of this sketch. His early life was spent on the homestead, of which he undertook the management at the age of 20, and soon afterward rented the farm. At the expiration of five years they moved with their one child to Iowa, but returned within a year to Canada, and purchased in Maryboro township, Wellington county, a 100-acre farm, to which was added fifty acres more during the next seven years. He leased his farm in 1885, and has since then been engaged as miller in the Maitland Valley Roller Mills, of Listowel, Perth county, Ont. In 1888 the firm increased their business by purchasing the Victoria Roller Mills, of Palmerston. Mr. Meyers was left in control of the former and his partner assumed control of the latter. The water works of the town of Listowel also belongs to Mr. Meyers, and have been operated by him since 1891. As he and his son Josephus buy all kinds of grain they purchased in 1892 a large elevator in Listowel, and further increased their business by leasing in 1894 the Oatmeal Mills, of Palmerston, with the privilege of buying. On May 12, 1895, his wife died, leaving a family of seven children.
Besides carrying on his own private enterprises Mr. Meyers has always been identified with matters pertaining directly to the public. While living on his farm he was for some time a member of the Town-ship Council, and later of the Listowel Council, until he accepted the contract to furnish the town with water. He is a member of the High School Board, of the board of directors of Morris-Field-Rogers Piano Company, and president of board of the Public Library of the same town.
