    Notes:

    ANDREW FREEMAN There passed away at his home after a month's illness, on Thursday morning, Mr. Andrew Freeman, for many years a respected and prominent farmer of this district. The departed was born in this village in November of 1869. He and his late wife (who predeceased him in September, 1929) farmed for some years on the farm now occupied by Mr. Angus Weber. About 35 years ago the late Mr. and Mrs. Freeman moved onto the farm where both passed away, and now occupied by their son, Henry. There survive three sons, Addison, Henry and Erwin, all of Conestogo; three daughters, Mrs. Josiah Gingerich, of the 4th line of Peel, Mrs. Menno Frey and Mrs. Milton Weber, of the 6th of Peel; two brothers, Wm. of Kitchener and Joseph of Walkerton; also 18 grandchildren. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on Sunday morning, with a brief service at his late home at 9 o'clock, thence to Martin's Meeting House where the main service was held, conducted by the Revs. Urias Martin and Jesse Bowman. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.

OLIVER VOEGTLE - There departed this life Thursday afternoon, Ella Freeman, wife of Mr. Oliver Voeglte 24 East Courtland Avenue. at the age of 74 years, she having passed her last birthday on December 28th. Her death followed an illness of seven months. Surviving her are the husband and four daughters and two sons who are; Mrs. Irvin Goetz of Preston, Mrs Abraham Otterbien city, Mrs. Clayton Dahlmer city, Norman, Melvin and Violet all at home. There are four grandchildren and also three brothers and one sister of the deceased. The brothers and sisters are Mr. William Freeman city; Andrew Conestoga, Joseph wellesly; and Mrs. George Putter of Brether City, Manitoba, who has been in the city on a six week visit. The late Mrs. Voeglte has resided in the city 13 years coming here from New Hamburg. She was born in Conestoga. The deceased was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. The funeral will be held at 2: 30 p.m. Sunday Afternoon from the home to Mount Hope Cemetery where interment will be made.

    On Thursday afternoon last, Ella Freeman, wife of Oliver Voegtle, passed away at her home in Kitchener at the age of 47 years. Her death followed an illness of seven months.

    Surviving her are her husband and four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Irvin Goetz, of Preston; Mrs. Abram Otterbein, Mrs. Clayton Dahmer, Norman, Melvin and Violet, all of Kitchener. Besides she leaves four grandchildren and, also three brothers and one sister.

    The late Mrs. Voegtle resided in New Hamburg for a number of years and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friend. The family removed to Kitchener from here about 13 years ago.

    The deceased was born in Conestogo and in religion was a faithful Methodist. The funeral look place on Sunday afternoon to Mount Hope Cemetery, Kitchener.

    DEATH OF MRS. BARLETT

    Galt Reporter: Many were painfully surprised on Sunday, to learn of the death of Mrs. Barlett, West Main St., which sad event took place on Saturday evening, shortly after nine o'clock. Mrs. Barlett had been suffering from ill-health, for the past six months, but it was not till within a few days ago that the malady took a serious turn. Margaret J. Rogers, aged 50 years, was born in Halton county, the daughter of the late William Rogers and Mrs. Rogers, Galt. When twenty-two years of age she was married to Mr. Henry C. Barlett and they lived for a number of years in Linwood and for the past three years in Galt. The family now left to mourn, besides the husband, are A. W., Miss Lillian, Gordon and Lorne, of Galt, and Mary A., of Los Angeles, California. The sorrowing friends have the sympathy of the community, in there affliction. Mrs. Barlett was a resident of Waterloo and Berlin for a number of years here. Mr. Barlett conducted an undertaking business.

    Funeral service was held in Floradale Tuesday for Irven Freeman of Floradale who died Saturday at the age of 72. Further service and burial followed at Martin's Mennonite meeting house.
    He was husband of the late Hannah Bauman, father of Elmer of Route 2, Alma, Minerva and Naomi of Floradale; brother of Henry of Conestogo, Mrs. Josiah Gingrich of Floradale, Mrs. Lovina Weber, Route 1, Wallenstein; four grandchildren also survive; one brother and one sister also predeceased him.

    Mr. and Mrs. Henry Luft and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Luft attended the funeral of the late Norman Voegtle at Kitchener last Saturday. The deceased was a nephew of Mrs. Luft and a son of Mr. Oliver Voegtley [sic], formerly of New Hamburg. He was accidentally killed by a sleigh upsetting while he was delivering milk. The accident occurred on Christmas morning and what makes it more saddening is that the deceased leaves a wife and five small children.

    Norman Voegtle Instantly Killed When Silverwood's Sleigh Overturned Fracturing His Skull

    Fatality Occurred Near House Of Refuge When Uneven Roadway And Sudden Pull Unbalanced Vehicle

    What would have otherwise been a Joyous Christmas was marred yesterday thru tragedy which entered into the home of one Kitchener family. While helping his brother Melvin deliver milk to customers of Silverwood's Kitchener Dairy. Limited. Norman Voegtle of South Queen street was instantly killed when the sleigh from which he was working turned over crushing him to almost instant death. Five little children are fatherless as a result. Coroner Dr. F. H. Kalbfleisch has ordered an inquent to take place at the city hall at eight o'clock Monday night. Dr. C. C. Belyea is in charge of the autopsy.

    According to the story told the Record by the deceased's father, Norman, who was about 30 years of age. was with his brother on Christmas eve when the two were getting trees for their respective families. Being a milkman and also being out late at night, Norman suspected that his brother might be somewhat late in getting to work in the morning. He told him, therefore, that in case he was late to call him and he would help with the route. It was the fate of Norman to be called.

    Upon reaching a spot almost in front of the House of Refuge on Frederick street about 11.30 o'clock, the sleigh was parked on the street, one side being raised. Having completed a call. Norman stepped on the side of the sleigh and ordered the horse to go on. It is thought that the weight of the body together with the sudden pull of the animal caused the sleigh. loaded with milk and empties, to overturn.

    Death Instantaneous

    From what can be learned Melvin was close to the sleigh when the tragedy happened. Members of the Salvation Army were also dispensing Christmas carols near at hand. The hurried to the scene and lifted the sleigh from atop the deceased, Dr. C. C. Belyea was in the neignborhood and responded to the call. It was found that death came almost instantaneously. The weight of the sleigh bore down on the skull fracturing it badly. The remains were taken to Lippert and Hunter's Funeral Home.

    Besides his wife. Clara and five children, there survives his father Oliver Voegtle of Albert street. south, one brother Melvin, Queen street south and four sisters, Mrs. John Glab, city. Mrs. A. Otterbine. Preston. Mrs. C. Dahmer, Waterloo and Miss Violet Voegtle, also of this city.

    Funeral Saturday

    The body will be at the Lippert and Hunter Funeral parlors until Friday morning at ten o'clock, when it will be removed to the home of the accident victim's father, 183 South Albert street. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon with services at two o'clock. Interment will be made in the Mount Hope cemetery.

    SCRIVER, Violet (Mrs. "S") after a short illness, ar Forest Heights Long Term Care Centre, on Tuesday May 20, 2001, in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late James Bryant Scriver. Loving mother of Margaret Perchaluk (the late Stephen) and the late Clarine Hicks. Lovingly remembered her seven grandchildren , Jim Perchaluk (London), Rick Perchaluk (Kitchener), Alan Hicks (Waterloo), Sharon Parrott (Calgary), Marge Wilson, (Waterloo), Susan Hicks (Oshawa) and James Hicks (Ottawa); her five great grandchildren Julie, Troy, Justin, Tommy, Lisa and Steven and her on great great granddaughter, Kayla. At Violet's request, cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

    Violet Scriver hosted cooking show on CKCO

    Only a select few knew how good,a mother and grandmother Violet Scriver was. But everyone knew how good a cook she was. From a tiny kitchen on the set of CKCO-TV, Scriver brought the fun of cooking to homes throughout Waterloo Region with her show Come Into the Kitchen.

    Although she passed away Tuesday at age 89, Scriver's family and friends say her success and loving personality will live on forever.

    Otherwise known as "Mrs. S," Scriver taught men and women, young and old, how to cook a healthy meal and make it look good. She taught them how to whip up quick and easy treats and make it look difficult. She taught amateur chefs how to have fun.

    "She was extremely popular," said Reg Sellner, who used to work with Scriver on the show "I bet there are still some people using her recipes to-day" Sellner, who was a young bachelor when the show was on the air, admitted he learned a few cooking tips from Scriver. "She was very precise with her cooking," he said. Her show debuted in the mid-1950s and lasted into the mid-1960s. It was one of the first live shows produced at the station. After that, she travelled throughout Ontario, appearing on cooking shows as a guest chef She also wrote and published a cookbook. In her spare time, she visited family "For her time she made quite a bit of money, but it always went to family" said one of her two daughters, Margaret Perchaluk. "That's just the type of person she was."

    Scriver went into the television business after her husband of only three years died in a factory accident. Although she was only 21 when he died, she never re-married, Perchaluk said. Instead, she concentrated on the family she had and helped raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of Perchaluk's fondest memories is when her mother would make miniature doughnuts,
    "She always said you shouldn't make them on damp days," said Perchaluk. "I never asked why"

    Having a mother as a professional cook, Perchaluk always had the best treats. She also had one of the most loving mothers, she said. "She was quite a woman," she said. "I am very proud of her"
